Has Obama Backed Off of a Big Opportunity to Heal America's Racial Divide?

The summer of 2009 was all about race, and Obama has little to lose by using this brief political window of racial animus to heal a few of the country's racial wounds.

Americans began the summer still celebrating the dawn of a "post-racial" era. They are ending it under no such illusion. The summer of 2009 was all about race, beginning with Republican claims that Sonia Sotomayor, Barack Obama's nominee to the US Supreme Court, was "racist" against whites. Then, just as that scandal was dying down, up popped "the Gates controversy", the furore over the president's response to the arrest of African American academic Henry Louis Gates Jr in his own home. Obama's remark that the police had acted "stupidly" was evidence, according to massively popular Fox News host Glenn Beck, that the president "has a deep-seated hatred for white people".

Obama's supposed racism gave a jolt of energy to the fringe movement that claims he has been carrying out a lifelong conspiracy to cover up his (fictional) African birth. Then Fox News gleefully discovered Van Jones, White House special adviser on green jobs. After weeks of being denounced as "a black nationalist who is also an avowed communist", Jones resigned last Sunday.

The undercurrent of all these attacks was that Obama, far from being the colour-blind moderate he posed as during the presidential campaign, is actually obsessed with race, in particular with redistributing white wealth into the hands of African Americans and undocumented Mexican workers. At town hall meetings across the US in August, these bizarre claims coalesced into something resembling an uprising to "take our country back". Henry D Rose, chair of Blacks For Social Justice, recently compared the overwhelmingly white, often armed, anti-Obama crowds to the campaign of "massive resistance" launched in the late 50s – a last-ditch attempt by white southerners to block the racial integration of their schools and protect other Jim Crow laws. Today's "new era of 'massive resistance'," writes Rose, "is also a white racial project."

There is at least one significant difference, however. In the late 50s and early 60s, angry white mobs were reacting to life-changing victories won by the civil rights movement. Today's mobs, on the other hand, are reacting to the symbolic victory of an African American winning the presidency. Yet they are rising up at a time when non-elite blacks and Latinos are losing significant ground, with their homes and jobs slipping away from them at a much higher rate than from whites. So far, Obama has been unwilling to adopt policies specifically geared towards closing this ever-widening divide. The result may well leave minorities with the worst of all worlds: the pain of a full-scale racist backlash without the benefits of policies that alleviate daily hardships. Meanwhile, with Obama constantly painted by the radical right as a cross between Malcolm X and Karl Marx, most progressives feel it is their job to defend him – not to point out that, when it comes to tackling the economic crisis ravaging minority communities, the president is not doing nearly enough.

For many antiracist campaigners, the realisation that Obama might not be the leader they had hoped for came when he announced his administration would be boycotting the UN Durban Review Conference on racism, widely known as "Durban II". Almost all of the public debate about the conference focused on its supposed anti-Israel bias. When it actually took place in April in Geneva, virtually all we heard about was Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's inflammatory speech, which was met with rowdy disruptions, from the EU delegates who walked out, to the French Jewish students who put on clown wigs and red noses, and tried to shout him down.

Lost in the circus atmosphere was the enormous importance of the conference to people of African descent, and nowhere more so than among Obama's most loyal base. The US civil rights movement had embraced the first Durban conference, held in summer 2001, with great enthusiasm, viewing it as the start of the final stage of Martin Luther King's dream for full equality. Though most black leaders offered only timid public criticism of the president's Durban II boycott, the decision was discussed privately as his most explicit betrayal of the civil rights struggle since taking office.

The original 2001 gathering was not all about Israelis v Palestinians, or antisemitism, as so many have claimed (though all certainly played a role). The conference was overwhelmingly about Africa, the ongoing legacy of slavery and the huge unpaid debts that the rich owe the poor.

This was never about race. It was always about class and Obama blew his chances so far !

Again and again, the fake "left" just can't seem to help it but keep on invoking the race card. This is exactly what the corporate interests want you to do. Cry "racism" and play your own race baiting games while Corporate America can quietly mug you financially yet again ! It appears that to bring up economic populism and drop race from the equation is "racist". Obama will lose not because of race but because he chose to side with the corporate interests and betray the working class. Obama is no different from Clinton and most DLC and Blue Dog Democrats.

It's too bad his wacky followers engage in race-baiting and condone reverse racism which is WRONG ! Obama needs to be an ECONOMIC POPULIST for Main Street instead of another fucking ELITIST posing for Wall Street ! All these bullshit social issues such as affirmative action, immigration, "abortion", etc ... will be taken care of when economic populism is put on the table first. I used to defend affirmative action, "abortion", gun control, etc ... but after watching the Democrats join the GOP in betraying the working class on the economic and foreign policy issues even when they came to power in 2007 and after, I don't feel like defending affirmative action for anyone at all, or all these "abortion" special interest groups, or for that matter some of those immigration special interest groups because I found out that they are working with the same big corporate interests that are busy dividing and defeating us on Main Street. Maybe we might be better off shutting down Roe v Wade, affirmative action, and putting up barriers on the borders. I hate having to see it that way but if that's the only way the Democratic Party will be forced into taking the economic issues for the working class seriously and shutting down the wars for oil, so be it !

Naomi, Obama has addressed race ...

Obama has addressed the racial divide, on several occasions ...

In Africa Obama gave a speech that The Economist magazine correctly noted “there was little in the speech that could not have been said by George Bush…” (July 16, 2009).

At the NAACP meeting in July of this year Obama's message was clearly "personal responsibility".

Obama: "But what's required today -- what's required to overcome today's barriers is the same as what was needed then. The same commitment. The same sense of urgency. The same sense of sacrifice. The same sense of community. The same willingness to do our part for ourselves and one another that has always defined America at its best and the African American experience at its best."

And recently Obama's message to school children of all colors ~ "personal responsibility". "WASHINGTON (Sept. 8) - Take responsibility for your education. Go to class and listen. Don't let failures define you."

In other words ... "You are on your own". Obama runs the "ownership society" touted by Bush! Don't believe it? Follow the money, the trillions of dollars flowing to banksters and War Mongers ...

Race is at the very bottom of the list as to what this is about.

And also, get the facts straight.....the woman who called the cops on Gates never mentioned his race.....that was something invented by the media. The arrest was more about a cop who was just plain mean........as many tend to be.

Grassroots opposition to Pres Obama is about the power structure he represents. Period.

If he goes beyond them, his chances of survival are rather bleak.

Does that make him the corporate shill that many make him out to be or a decent man trying to do what he can in a corrupt world?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I hope it's the latter and that we all pull together to help him succeed. A useful step would be to stop wasting energy on despising the man.

Then help to expose the overprivileged "corporation" as the enemy of the people.

Sean Wilentz, "Race Man"

The Obama campaign wore out the deck playing the race card during the primaries. You were pretty much called a racist for daring to criticize their sh*tass candidate.

This was when they weren't calling Hillary's female supporters the C word. It was then I realized the Democratic Party was screwed.

Sean Wilentz wrote about Obama's dirty campaigning in a article in The New Republic called "Race Man." The O-holes called him a racist, naturally.

I love Naomi Klein's work. But in this case we are asking Obama to heal hundreds of years of human racism. Not likely. While I want the president to be forceful and direct about tough issues, i know he is in a rough spot. There are idiots launching an attack from inside america to destroy it using racist lies and capitalizing on scared, stupid americans. Obama's challenge is more than representing one racial group which he already does larger than life by just being there. The rest of us should be resisting and countering the no-nothing mob with reasonable discourse, election of thoughtful representatives, and support of intense dialog. we counter the wilsons, Limbaughs, and Hannity's of the world by being smarter, not madder. And face it, being smarter than Glen Beck is not rocket science.

...Mostly because of some US Southern states who still fear a black man in power.

This is embedded in the individual and collective psyche of many people in these states.

With generational and other demographic changes in these states to come we may see the dream of a post-racial society.

Sorry but not yet

How long are people going to subscribe to the "Father President" propaganda, which posits that the president possesses some kind of great power that can effect miraculous change, no matter what the problem is?

Obama, even if he wanted to (which he doesn't), could never effectively address the issue of race because quite frankly its bigger than either him or his office.

Astute observers knew that an Obama presidency would not decrease, but significantly increase the amount of racial tension in the country. The simple reason is that for a significant portion of white America, his election has obviated any reason to talk about racism at all. In effect, "We elected one of 'you people' to the highest office in the land, so any complaining about racism is over."

But of course the problems remain. The fact is that America was founded on racism, and while the temporary prosperity brought on by undue access to cheap oil has brought on a certain level of "tolerance" from the majority, the basic biases remain very strong.

Making matters worse is that Obama had (and has) no intention of rocking the racial boat at all. His policies and sympathies are clearly with the ruling elite and not with the downtrodden of "his people."

anti-Obama crowds to the campaign of "massive resistance" launched in the late 50s – a last-ditch attempt by white southerners to block the racial integration of their schools and protect other Jim Crow laws.

Opposition to fundamentally altering someone's healthcare using the Police Powers of the State--especially amongst folks who depend on said coverage--is not the same as Jim Crow. It's ridiculous to conflate the two, and yet so, so very predictable.

Why?

Your logic is warped by your perceived devils, and you're missing the enjoyment of your Nirvana moment: a democrat-dominated House of Representatives, a democrat-locked up Senate, a Democrat in the Whitehouse, a new democrat-appointee to the Supreme Court, and perpetual wars, a bone tossed your way to 'reform healthcare' someday, a medicare system that will eat up the entire federal budget in a decade or two, a so-called social-security system that will directly contribute to that outcome, a the commitment to further GWB's course of setting this country on track to be an even greater debtor nation to show for it. How's your Nirvana treating you? Oh, yeah. It's the idiot talking heads at Fox News that are prohibiting you enjoying your Moment.

Nice "change". Make sure you pay attention to the handful of shriekers and crazies, else you'll have to deal with the fact that you've been had by a slick-talking Chumpion of the Status Quo.

Let's Call it what it is: IGNORANCE FUELED BY FEAR
Posted by: thinkpeople on Sep 15, 2009 5:42 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This society has dealt with some expression of its fear of others from its inception. Fear of Native Americans, women, Asians, Africans, homosexuals, you name it. Americans have hidden behind the psychosocial terminology that served as a smoke screen for what is the bottom line. Too many Americans are ignorant and defensive at being so. With that said, it is not the fault of the masses who exhibit rude and misguided behavior and fear. They, like many people of other thinking, persuasions and attitudes, are programmed by their leaders, to react a particular way. I have worked with communities and am keenly aware of how easy it is to influence the thinking of people who fear others.

There has never been a post-racism period in America and for such a period to exist, those who benefit from such attitudes have to step up and facilitate the change. Rep. Joe Wilson is the most recent example of my point about leadership influencing behavior. President Obama is not responsible for Rep. Wilson's heart and brain. Rep Wilson's mother and father are. It's time for personal responsibility to raise its head in the homes of fearful and misguided Americans regardless of race, gender and cultural persuasions.

To a Californian, New York is composed of many races and religions, all living side by side, detesting each other. Immigrants are always welcome in the city because it is important for New Yorkers to have someone to look down upon.

Barack Obama is the living symbol of our silence
Posted by: chlamor on Sep 15, 2009 6:06 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
He is our silence writ large.

He is our Silence running for president –

With respect to Black interests, Obama would be a silenced Black ruler: A muzzled Black emperor. A Black man at the head of the White Amerikkkan State — one who’s unwilling to speak truth to power, but more than willing, like a Condi Rice or a Colin Powell, to become that power and to launch wars of aggression against other people of color.

That’s another matter. Most of us at my workplace, for example, don’t want to become that power, we don’t want to lord it over others or punish them if they disobey the corporate rules, much less the rules of Pax Amerikkkana. We don’t want to “succeed” that badly, not badly enough to sell our souls and boss around — and certainly not kill — people who, we know, suffer every day just like we suffer.

And that’s the Obama equation. Keep your Black/ Brown mouth shut and you can “succeed.” And you can still feel “clean.” Here we have the real story behind Obama’s portrayal of his squeaky clean-ness. Yes, Black man, yes, Black woman, you can have power in this killer-racist system and stay “clean.” In Obama’s carefully constructed image lies a symbolic resolution of a profound inner conflict that all people of color in the US face in their daily lives.

Obama plays the role of a Black Cinderella. He does for Black folks what Cinderella does for girls. He shows that oppression and silence can be good for you — at least if you are the one the prince chooses, or if you are the one who gets to be the prince. It’s total fantasy. It’s a glass slipper that will break at the arch and be turned on us like a broken beer bottle or a jagged-edged knife; the same knife Obama has threatened to turn on the people of Iran and Pakistan.

The rest of the racist subtext is this: Obama, with his extraordinary intelligence and presence (by any standard), is, in the eyes of white Amerikkka,(and, according to the standards of the so-called “Enlightenment,” which still rule the thinking of Euro-Americans) the half-white, and thus, half-redeemed “Black savage” — “redeemed” by his “white blood”, “civilized” by it – redeemed by his relative whiteness — ultimately redeemed and refined by the white nation itself.

Many people, nonetheless, think Obama is the realization of Dr. King’s dream. The power of this archetype is immense. It’s why the completely empty catch-phrase “Change” works for him, and it’s the deeper reason for the quasi-religious wave of “Obama fever.” Obama is Cinderella and King’s Dream rolled into one. He’s even had the myth of Kennedy’s so-called “Camelot” invoked on his behalf. For many, he’s not only phenomenally charismatic, but irresistible.

But, if Obama is the realization of King’s dream, then the price of the dream is silence. And, as the slogan goes, “Silence = Death.” If Obama is the realization of King’s dream, then the price is silence about the oppression of Black people and the abandonment of the millions locked away under the conditions of mass incarceration that have replaced Jim Crow. If Obama is the realization of King’s dream, then being Black means being white; then Black is white, or at least it’s Black on white terms. It’s a Blackness that dare not speak its name.

Obama’s shot at the presidency doesn’t signal the end of racism in the U.S. It is made possible, rather, by the new form racism itself has taken, a form that offers a prison cell to poor people of color, and, for the middle class, on the other hand, an Apartheid-style pass card stamped “SILENCED.”

Barack Obama and the “End” of Racism

Race is not the issue any longer - it's all about wealth and access these days.

A black child who is given financial security and a good education and enough money to attend the college of their choice will have far more likelihood of future fiscal security than a white child from a poor rural area who has no money for college and no familial connections to wealth.

The real issue in the U.S. today is that wealth disparity has hit record levels, while homeowners have become renters all across the board. This wealth disparity is now pushing us towards even greater splits and will likely lead to a spike in crime as well.

Economically, you've got a GDP that now tracks the fortunes of billionaires rather than of the middle class - wildly skewed. Media ownership is ever more condensed, as well.

It's the robber baron era all over again - and whether the issue is health care, the war in Iraq, renewable energy or anything else, the interests of billionaires are put first by the politicians, and the interests of the public come last.

Watch the classic 1945 film on Despotism and Democracy, and ask yourself where we fall on the scale:

Despotism and Democracy

Respect Scale
"As a community moves toward despotism, respect is restricted to fewer and fewer people."

"If common courtesy is withheld from large groups of people because of their political attitudes, race or religion..."

"If people are rude to others because they think their wealth gives them that right..."

"The opportunity to develop skills and put them to use is a test of the respect scale."

Power Scale
"Communities which concentrate decision-making in a few hands are moving toward despotism."

"Today, democracy can ebb away in communities who allow power to be concentrated in the hands of powers."

"The test of despotic power is that it can disregard the will of the people. It rules without the consent of the governed."

"In a downright despotism, outright opposition is dangerous, whether the despotism is official or unofficial."

Economic Distribution Scale:

"If middle income groups grow smaller, despotism is more likely. Concentrated land ownership increases the likelihood of despotism."

"If this condition exists over the nation as a whole, so that the control of jobs and business opportunities is in a few hands, then despotism is more likely."

"Taxes that weigh most heavily on those least able to pay promote despotism."

Information Scale

"A community rates low on the information scale when the press, TV and radio are controlled by just a few people."

Ask yourself - where are we?

Ms. Klein clearly has no concept of the deep-rooted and intransigent nature of racial prejudice possessing many if not most in the Deep South as well as scattered outposts in the North and West. It has been inculcated from generation unto generation unto generation, and the amazing thing to anyone of a certain age and untouched by this emotionally-crippling scourage is that the nation has made so great a progress over the last five decades.
Now we’re seeing the the penultimate throes of race hatred as its writhes in the streets, like a wolf biting at its own entrails. Nothing Obama or anyone else could do would ease the pain or hasten its demise.

Everybody seems to want THIS president to be able to address EVERYTHING all at the same time. Race absolutely can NOT be at the top of his list of issues given the quagmire he inherited from Bush. I'm think oh let's see; the ECONOMY, 2 wars, health care are the top 3...as well they should be.

It's very obvious that a lot of the crap that's going on now has to do with race. Hell just look at the Repub party, every photo...there's not a person of color in shouting distance of ANY of those photos. Now there has to be a reason for that and the token Michel Steele, Clearence Thomas' and the like don't count. No they hate that the lost to a Democrat but they REALLY hat that the lost to a HALF Black man so now the cry is "I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK" and my question is exactly what country is that? This country was built on the backs of Black people (400 years of FREE LABOR), I'm thinking it should OK for a Black person to rise to the level of President of the United States, if he or she has the credentials and can navigate the gauntlet of our electoral system which he does and which he has. But the "right" has done nothing but FAIL AND FAIL AND FAIL and now that they've lost, they suddenly act like they have all the answers to everything now based on their rhetoric but we all know it's smoke and mirrors and astro turf. The people you saw in DC this weekend were the fringe of the right all gathered together with their hoods off just waiting to be called into action by Rush and Hannity and Beck to do some stupid attempt at revolution. Shame on each and every one of them and every RepbliTARD who doesn't express outrage. AMERICA IS SICK AND TIRED OF THE WAY YOU ACT ON THE RIGHT. You're not doing ANYTHING that's in the best interest of the masses; no you're doing what you think is in the best interest of a hand full of rich capitalists who don't give a crap about the masses and to further your party's failing agenda. Keep up the good work Repubs. Either bring substance forth to be considered or sit down and SHUT UP!!!!

LET'S PUT AWAY THE MAGNIFYING GLASSES

There is a rush to judgement about people based information that really doesn't matter. We go to great pains to nit pick at background, religion, political beliefs, money and status, etc. When in fact what matters initially is, do you like the person. Is he/she interesting? Some of us have diverse backgrounds and a person's appearance is not all that important. We overlook the superficial stuff. We can never disregard the fact that we are different from each other in many ways. Most of it doesn't matter. Obama cannot change the way people think anymore than Hillary Clinton could have instantly improved working conditions for women two weeks after having been elected. The racial problems that continue to exist are kept alive by people who believe with all their hearts that they are indeed superior. Not just with regard to race, but in other ways that feed their egos. Old habits die hard. Some of us never had them to begin with. But trying to convert these people to believe that we really do live in a melting pot is not any easy job. It's also not Obama's job. What I resent is the fact that they succeed in owning the airwaves, the streets and now the Senate Floor. Forget the politics, their behavior is rude, crude, threatening and generally unacceptable. They seem to be the only segment of the 'melting pot' that has the right to Free Speech, I certainly don't. They feel no obligation to 'melt' along with the rest of us. I am white, female, blonde and divorced. I would never make the cut. I prefer it that way. So acceptance is up to individuals, not a president. But lately, those of us who get on with others are being pushed around by a minority of the population that doesn't like very many people. They aren't sure of each other. The writer makes many good points but they are irrelevant. Our problems stem from a small percentage of the population, and they aren't minorities of any kind, except in numbers. Why are we afraid of them? ANNA

Naomi Klein - what a writer!

Who around here could do a better job of writing a wonderfully frilly piece of hot air about a hopeless hypothesis? Going to lots of smart people saying lots of wonderful-sounding words to back up a hopelessly empty argument STILL leaves Ms. Klein with a lifeless argument, unfortunately.

Besides, an even more polished-up liberal did an even more polished-up version of the same dead argument in Salon at the same time.

I can save everyone ten minutes they'll never get back with her entire thesis:

"I't just all those fat old WHITE people."

I believe that the racial issue is majorly important, so my comment is not saying that it isn't. But, who exactly did we think we were hiring when we elected him president? Here is some news, He Isn't God! He has had the fight of his life in promoting healthcare for all. He has staked his presidency on it. He walked into a financial disaster...a trainwreck. He has been in office for NINE months...not even a year!! I get so tired of people who want him to fulfill their dreams and fix their causes when he has the problems of the world on his back. His opposing party is out for his blood, they WORK for his failure. I believe in Left causes but know that he has 3 more years to address issues. Right now he is triaging the DISASTER left behind by bush. Just by BEING a Black president, he is doing major work........he will not drop this important issue, just give him some time!

While President Obama doesn't openly discuss "race" isn't this a conversation that "we" need to have. Never do I remember a white man showing up and one of George W. Bush's events armed to the teeth! Nor was his opposition usually allowed within more than 1 mile of any of his speaking venues! With the rabid white men be it those in the media or those in Congress speaking out loudly and lying, they have shown nothing but their own fear. Fear that as "white people" they are losing "their status", "their power", "their white so I am right" position in the world! Their fears of becoming "minorities", and they feel that the "minorities" that have been mistreated at their hands for so long they just might retaliate (guilty conscious - go figure)! So the fact that they are stoking the flames of resentment amongst their own who feel the same way is no great surprise! Simply because an African American was elected to the Presidency, didn't mean that America was post racial - what it really is is that the last guy f--ked it up so badly, and the doddering old man and his mean cheerleader didn't appear to be viable options!

The truth is that as a group "white people" don't really want to discuss the various ways that discrimination did and still does play a role in todays America! Most will say, it's not me, and I didn't do anything to them (African Americans)! Well, African Americans didn't attempt to exterminate the Native nations that were here when the pilgrims arrived either, but the fact still remains that the Native nations are living in poverty on "the reservations" and are still fighting for justice! And frankly "we" all owe them better than the way they have been treated!

Obama’s Positions
Posted by: ShrubtheWarcriminal on Sep 15, 2009 7:54 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Obama took JUST as much corporate money as Hillary, and more then McAncient!

Obama is FOR: De-Regulation, which got us in this housing 'mess', along with Bush's 'Owenershipr Society!

Obama is For: Health Insurance, (was for a big donor or who knows now )
vs: single payer health care

Obama is FOR: Privatizing Social Security
vs: Removing the cap, on income!

Obama is FOR: Nuclear Power and Coal (both donors) Sold out to Exon, after spills effected nearby drinking water, voluntary compliance!

Obama is FOR: ONLY enforcing a few clauses in NAFTA, not re-negotiating it to bring back "FAIR" Trade!

Obama still has Gitmo open.

Obama wants to spend perhaps a trillion more on the banks. Like Bush, he’s not giving it directly to homeowners.

Unlike the Republicans, Obama also wants to spend $800 billion for his economic stimulus plan. Which is good—the idea of a stimulus is good. But if you look closely at the plan, too much of it goes through the market, through corporations.

It gives tax breaks to businesses, hoping that they’ll hire people. No—if people need jobs, you don’t give money to the corporations, hoping that maybe jobs will be created. You give people work immediately.

A lot of people don’t know the history of the New Deal of the 1930s. The New Deal didn’t go far enough, but it had some very good ideas. And the reason the New Deal came to these good ideas was because there was huge agitation in this country, and Roosevelt had to react. So what did he do? He took billions of dollars and said the government was going to hire people. You’re out of work? The government has a job for you.

Face it Obamabots, Bam Bam is a corporate whore who will go down as the weakest one term president in the history of this country.

He is NOT a progressive in the mildest definition of the word.

What this country needs is a third party...but even if I could hold my breath for the rest of my life, it will not happen...hence you are witnessing the death of a once proud country, that used to have real HOPE of moving forward out of the dark ages of religious hope.

White males in Washington will continue to sabotage Obama's reform because they're scared shitless that an African American will fix this country when all they've done for decades is destroy it.

So is it about racism? Yes. But what's even scarier than that are all the white politicians in this country who couldn't care less about the people.

The "black" race issue will never be resolved by anything short of full blown enlightenment. We are taught from birth that the blackness of the night is dangerous. We hear this message from all aspects of life, religion, books, films financial systems etc. Religions may be the worst offenders of the anti darkness and pro light message . Dark is evil and light is angelic and divine. In the hindu tradition, the evil ones are the "black skinned rakshasas". In movies, the villain is often dressed in black clothing and does his evil deeds at night. If the stock market crashes it is labeled a "black day" An approaching storm has black clouds and that is a signal of impending danger. I know, i know, it is more complex than that, and the "corrections" will follow shortly after i post this. But when we peel away all of the complex social issues, what is exposed underneath is FEAR. Fear is the driving force behind the ignorance of racism. tell the truth, we favor and cultivate the light and reject and fear the darkness. As to non black racism, it is the perceived difference between us and them, that is the surface issue, but fear is still the main underlying component.

Lay the question of the "opportunity" to"heal" racism on Obama's lap ? Nonsense. Ask that same question of the goober, yahoo, red-necks in the southern states, and many of the western and mid-western states. And, oh yes, ask Glenn Beck and his racist goons on Fox News and a goodly portion of the Republican members of the Congress that same question too. I'm even more sure you'll get a nasty, loud, hootin' and hollern' hateful mouthful. But don't lay it on Obama's inaction - - no matter how "reasoned" and inspirationally speculative your own answer is.

in Canada a couple of weeks ago insisted that

1. BECAUSE AMERICANS ELECTED OBAMA (not because the money & power *let* him run in opposition to the freakish ReichWing)

2. that the United States was POST-RACIAL

THEREFORE:
This individual claimed this meant that anyone who didn't like American Foreign Policy

3. ...WAS A "RACIST"

4. because it meant Americans were their OWN RACE NOW...

Its simply staggering how easily throwing 'race' or 'religion' into any question (as in Israel) of ethical behaviour...

rapidly degenerates into disturbingly freaky bullshit.

How DARE the World hold American citizens responsible for the actions of their businesses & *democratic* government policies & actions?!
dammit! to use HUMAN RIGHTS as a metric... makes 'un-Americans' racists against the 'new American Race'!!

More white "faux" liberal nonsense
Posted by: Kym525 on Sep 15, 2009 9:21 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
WHY should Obama be the one to "talk" about race?

In fact, why should ANY person of color be the ones to start an open and honest conversation about race? WE didn't start this nonsense, and WE certainly don't benefit from institutionalized racism, but WE are the ones it impacts greatly--be it in education, housing or the judicial system.

Not to mention, when people of color DO talk about race, as is all too often evidenced here on "oh-so-liberal" Alternet, many whites have no problem expressing their deep-seated ignorance about blacks and other groups. They don't want to "hear" about race and attempt to shift the conversation or to blame minority groups for their own attitudes.

Refer to the article on Professor Henry Louis Gates to see the level of bigotry that isn't coming from the usual suspects.

Once again it seems that white America wants someone of color to do the job they are just to damn lazy to do themselves. Ms. Klein, you want to talk about race--THEN DO IT--there are a lot of whites who would be willing to help you (Tim Wise for starters), and allow President Obama to do HIS job (as best as he can considering that he's trying to clean up the mess left behind by another cadre of white guys). And when you DO talk about race, make certain you don't sugarcoat white culpability in maintaining privilege.

I have been trying to find a reference to this conference for years. I was convinced it had been intentionally wiped from history. Why?
Because, at the time it was obvious that the attack on 9-11 was a direct response to the Bush League snubbing this conference.

At the time it was the first thought in my mind. The behavior of little Georgie for the first eight months after blatantly getting the election stolen for him by brother Jeb (who was governor of Florida at the time of the shut down of the recounts), made me sure we would get attacked if someone didn't shut him up. When he snubbed those conferences it was the last straw. The attack was a direct response and the administration did everything in their power to make sure the American people never put two and two together.

The 9-11 'truthers' and the 'deniers' can argue till the sun goes out but I knew at the time what the score was and I'm glad I get to say this and try to set the record straight. Whether the Bush League was involved in the attack or not they DEFINITELY PROVOKED IT by their behavior!

Why don't more white dems in Washington speak out for Obama? Why don't they rally the American people to support our president? Why don't they face down the republican propaganda machine?

WHY? WHY? WHY?

Because if Obama is assassinated, Joe Biden will be president, and Joe Biden is a white male. Joe's okay.

White male supremacist republicans & democrats know that if monsters like Beck and Limbaugh incite enough hatred among extremists, it's just a matter of time, and bye bye Obama.

America's all white patriarchy will relinquish power when hell freezes over.

Where to begin?

Has the true scope of the bush disaster really become apparent (never mind UNDERSTOOD) to our people?
Have two phony elections, war crimes, war profiteering, and crimes against humanity fully registered with our body politic?
Have the ghastly results of 911 and our paranoic reaction to it been admitted to?
Has it been acknowleged that NOTHING GOOD came out of the reagan & bush regimes?
Has a criminal investigation of their manifold crimes begun? Will it ever?
This is the can of worms handed to President Obama. In order to begin the possibly impossible task of setting things aright, it must be ascertained WHERE TO BEGIN, and what problems must be attacked first, a daunting chore for even the best of us.
If there's one issue I disagree with the President on it's the one of punishment of the bushies for their crimes. I just can't see them getting away with so many capital offenses and their TREASON.
Some questions to ask yourself when trying to get to sleep:
1. If Gore had rightfully been sworn in as President, would there have been a 9/11?
2. Without the bush crime family in control, would we have gone into Iraq and Afghanistan?
3. If the bushies had been prosecuted for election fraud, along with the crooked "supreme" court justices, would we be in the mess we're in now?
4.Will we EVER have justice in this nation again?
So, if we're to repair the damage wrought by two crooked rethug regimes, where do we begin?
If you have a good idea on the subject, by all means, write the President with them.

The "1" ratings make my earlier point
Posted by: Kym525 on Sep 15, 2009 11:41 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I noticed that most of the comments that have been rated a "1" (including mine) are those in which whites are challenged to talk about the issue of institutionalized racism or to deal with their own ingained prejudices. The comments which rate "4" or "5" are those in which whites totally AVOID the issue (as usual) and blame it on "economics" or that Obama isn't "progressive enough" for them or that, to quote that famous post-modern poet Rodney King "can't we all just get along".

The conversation, in case anyone here was sleeping while they read this--IS ABOUT RACE!!! Not his policies, not his choice of clothes. Try to stay on topic and let's discuss why Obama SHOULDN'T be the poster-man for racial healing. After all, no one ever asked GW or Cheney to do so.

Once again, supposedly "liberal" whites deflect any culpability in regards to maintaing the status quo and the onus has again shifted back to people of color having to begin the the conversation and hoping that whites will bother to listen.

Is racism still alive? Yes. Is it a major factor in politics today, probably.

The real question is how much is this purposely kept alive to shore up a failing right wing republican party?

The likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh et.al make it clear to me they are racist and are using their freedom of speech to inflict harm on other's freedoms by perpetuating racism as a means to a political end.

One can argue that their audience is already racist so they are not adding any more fuel to the fire. But they are still contributing to the furtherance of ignorance which may be passed on to the next generation.

Obama's in an unenviable position
Posted by: Kym525 on Sep 15, 2009 12:46 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
If, as Naomi Klein claims, that Obama doesn't talk about race or use his position to have the discussion, then he's "selling out". On the other hand, if he did use his presidency to discuss racism, people would see that as him being concerned only about "black issues", since conventional wisdom would have it that "racism" is a "black issue"--even though it's not.

Obama was forced to address race during his campaign because of Rev. Wright. Was Bush ever forced to address race when he spoke at Bob Jones University--a campus that had as part of its bylaws prohibiting interracial dating?

We saw (unless you were living under a rock) what happened when Obama addressed what was clearly a case of racial profiling. In spite of the fact that Obama stated that the arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates was an "act of stupidity", people (mainly white) took that to mean he was calling the white officer "stupid", and Obama ended up issuing an apology (something I wish he hadn't done).

Racism is the bull in the china shop that too many liberal whites like to dance around. Posters like Maxpayne and SteveA like to break their arms patting themselves on the back because they think it's all about economics and if we had economic parity racism wouldn't exist. That's a bunch of bull and intelligent people know it. Ask any black male who works for a Fortune 500 company how many times they've been passed up for a promotion (in spite of having stellar qualifications), mistaken for a "criminal" or have been ignored by cab drivers. Money doesn't always equal access. Racism is a MINDSET based on the false premise that white skin is intrinsically better than others. All the money fairly distributed won't change that mindset. Only honest discussion including acknowledgment of culpability, sincere regret and working for change will do that.

I highly doubt that Maxpayne or SteveA are willing to do that.

I like the posts of Kim525, she is telling it like it is. However, the progressive focus of this website is for like-minded people. Institutional Racism has its' historical genesis in the very origins of this country. Jim Crow dejure laws and defacto practices of racism on an institutional level have survived the Civil Rights ERA. Reverse discrimination legal decisions FED, STATE, LOCAL have contributed to the reigniting of the institutional racism agenda that the southern states in this country took for granted. Just the mention of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and other media pundits who utilize their outlets to promote the continuation of the institutional racism agenda sends a chilling reminder of what White America is capable of even in an Obama Presidency!!! Remember, the efforts and lives of true Civil Rights Activists like WEB Dubois, Paul Robeson, Malcolm X, MLK Jr., and a host of others who came before and after him realized that this time we cannot allow our complacency to let the forces of tyranny and racism win the battle for economic justice and equity. Will progressive sit on the sidelines or join us in fighting institutional racism everywhere it raises its' MEDUSA-like head?

Working for Corporate and Imperial Whites in the White House

Consistent with his revealing historical deletions and his “race-neutral” campaign, Obama has followed in George W. Bush’s footsteps by deciding to boycott the second international conference on racism, the “Durban II” gathering in Switzerland this month and for the same two basic reasons as Bush. First, the conference dares to raise the issue of slavery reparations. The conference dares to discuss the racism experienced by Arab Palestinians under the apartheid-like system in the occupied territories.

And so the new White House, with its first black president, its first black Attorney General, and its first black Ambassador to the UN decided not to be present at the world’s leading forum to address international race relations.

“Obama revealingly resists pressure to investigate and prosecute the monumental war and human rights crimes of the Bush administration.”

Meanwhile Obama is finding ways to sustain the petro-colonial U.S. occupation of Iraq and to expand the related U.S. wars on Afghanistan and Pakistan. He revealingly resists pressure to investigate and prosecute the monumental war and human rights crimes of the Bush administration, claiming that “nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past.” This from a former and supposedly liberal law professor, someone who should be expected to understand that one investigates and punishes past human rights crimes precisely in order to discourage and prevent their occurrence in the present and future.

He approves the denial of habeas corpus to the Empire’s secretly detained “enemy combatants” as long as the mainly Muslim victims are flown to the Bagram Air Force prison in Afghanistan instead of Guantanamo (since prisoners in “war zones” can be more readily denied basic rights).
He resorts to off-the-books, so-called supplemental funding of the Iraq and Afghanistan-Pakistan Wars – a deceptive war-financing method that Bush pioneered and which Obama said he would abandon.
He sustains the crushing 47-year trade embargo and the American travel ban on Cuba, rejecting broad Latin American sentiment and even the opinion of some Republicans by insisting on punishing and undermining the largely black and socialist island, which can never be forgiven for daring to modernize and develop outside and against the supervision of Uncle Sam.
All of these and other Obama foreign policies operate on the white and imperial side of global power and attack predominantly non-white others.
“It’s not for nothing that Obama got a record-setting $38 million from the white-run financial, insurance, and real estate industries for his 2008 campaign.”

Booker T. Obama

The issue is class and the policies and proposals of the Demopublicans that favour the ruling Corporatist interests as opposed to proposed policies that would be equitable. The Corporatists want to make the issue race because by doing so they can ignore the issues at hand.

Much of the wealth of the Corporatists is gained from institutions known as "financial intermediaries." These include insurance companies and banks.

A public option or a single payer insurance plan destroys billions to tens of billions in profits for the Corporatists. This is why they are opposing these options. Race is not an issue here.

The very same interests that profited from the Bush wars are profiting from the Obama wars. Yet, since the election, the silence on this from the Democrats is deafening. And, the calls for impeachment and justice for the war criminals and liars in the Bush Administration disappeared almost entirely when the Democrats seized the Congress in 2006, with Rahm Emmanuel making sure that antiwar Democrats got short shrift from the Party in electoral support and funding. Race is not an issue here.

Despite campaigning against lobbyists and promising 'change', O'bomb'em appointed lobbyists and alumni from his biggest backer-- Goldman Sachs--to high government office. He broke his promise. He supported the bailout along with his 'opponent' McCain. Race is not an issue here.

He also appointed to the FDA a former employee and lobbyist for Monsanto Corporation... which is, perhaps, unsurpassed in its destruction and rapine of the environment.

NAFTA? And he betrayed working Americans by failing to re-negotiate this pro-Wall Street Treaty. This is not a racial issue.

Yet, here comes Ms. Klein and the other n'er do wells of the pseudo-Left to make race the issue of the day. What is one to make of this?

War, health care, unemployment, homelessness, declining standards of living, corruption, environmental problems...all of these things which can be addressed without the slightest concern about race. What does O'Bomb'em do? What do his water carriers do? He addresses school children and they talk about race.... though Bernanke did say a few days past that 'recovery was right around the corner.'

Race is not the issue. It is, however, the issue that the Corporatists would like the people to continue to worry to death.

Dean Martin to Sammy Davis, both dressed as priests, still makes me laugh. The two of them were magic together.
First off, LOVE Sammy, And miss him.
My Mom worked with him and was good friends with his second wife.
Hence, I got to meet him when I was about twelve years old. The epitome of cool! Mom did a duet with Dean Martin on his show back in the '70's, too.
In fact, those two are my favorite Rat Pack alumni. Mom is more a Frank fan, although she loved Dean personally. Sorry. Waxing nostalgic on a political forum. You started it! LOL
I think Sir Sammy would have some choice words to say to these uncool racist idiots and it would have been smart, bitingly smooth and too true to reply to with anything like the fabrication we're seeing now. It would have made jaws drop and white faces red.
I do, like you, think these dummies are unteachable.
However, if we allow them to wallow like pigs in muck unchecked, I believe the ideological inbreeding will continue ad nauseum. The least we can do is stand against it and call it what it is, even if our President is too polite to say so. At least until something drastic happens.
The fact that they feel empowered to be public about their bias means we know where they are, moreso than any other time in our history. They usually hide in dark places like roaches, waiting to come out and feed on the detritus we throw out as useless, decayed and rotten.
This is an advantage we should use, before it disappears and they scurry back into the woodwork.
Time to bust out the RAID.

Obama Snubs Africa, Then African Americans

How DARE the World hold American citizens responsible for the actions of their businesses & *democratic* government policies & actions?!
dammit! to use HUMAN RIGHTS as a metric... makes 'un-Americans' racists against the 'new American Race'!!

unfuckingcredible

That line from "Cannonball Run",
Dean Martin to Sammy Davis, both dressed as priests, still makes me laugh.
