Rebuking Cheney's Torture Propaganda in 7 Easy Steps

Cheney is all over the airwaves, trotting out his propaganda and defense of the Bush administration's serial violations of the Geneva conventions.

First of all, Dick Cheney has all sorts of nerve purporting to speak in defense of the CIA. His administration outed a senior CIA operative, Valerie Plame, in retaliation for her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, exercising his freedom of speech (because he exercised it to criticize the Bush administration’s lie-filled, one-way propaganda train to the Iraq war).

Second, CIA interrogators themselves have said that they believed that Cheney’s torture policy put individual CIA personnel in legal jeopardy. As Greg Sargent has pointed out, on page 94 of the recently released Inspector General’s report, we learn the following:

“During the course of this Review, a number of Agency officers expressed unsolicited concern about the possibility of recrimination or legal action resulting from their participation in the CTC program….One officer expressed concern that one day, Agency officers will wind up on some “wanted list” to appear before the World Court for war crimes…”

This is not even to mention, in a broader sense, the risk to any US personnel that possibly ended up in “enemy” hands where captors of US prisoners could justify their own acts of torture by pointing to US tactics.

Third, Dick Cheney showed utter contempt for the CIA when he went not once, not twice, but more than a dozen times to Langley to pressure analysts to fit intelligence to his political agenda. He and his top aide Scooter Libby were “attempting to pressure analysts on the subject of weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq, according to Vincent Cannistraro, a former counterterrorism chief at the CIA. So when Cheney talks about being “offended as hell,” let’s remember how much faith Cheney had in the CIA in the lead up to the Iraq invasion. I’m sure the CIA analysts who he tried to manipulate were “offended as hell” by Cheney’s actions. “The visits were, in fact, unprecedented,” wrote Ray McGovern, who was vice president George HW Bush’s national security briefer. “During my 27-year career at the Central Intelligence Agency, no vice president ever came to us for a working visit.” Those personal visits were in addition to the ones Cheney received at home. “I enjoyed having the CIA show up on my doorstep every morning, six days a week, with the latest intelligence,” Cheney said on Fox News Sunday.

Fourth, the tactics Cheney apparently loves were a violation of US law, international law and conventions that the US has ratified—including the Convention Against Torture ratified under the militant leftist regime of Ronald Reagan. That dovish draft-dodger who wouldn’t know torture if he endured it for several years, John McCain, pointed out the lawless aspects of Cheney’s torture program on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “I think the interrogations were in violation of the Geneva Conventions and the convention against torture that we ratified under President Reagan,” said McCain. “I think these interrogations, once publicized, helped al Qaeda recruit. I got that from an al Qaeda operative in a prison camp in Iraq… I think that the ability of us to work with our allies was harmed. And I believe that information, according go the FBI and others, could have been gained through other members.”

Jeremy Scahill, an independent journalist who reports frequently for the national radio and TV program Democracy Now!, has spent extensive time reporting from Iraq and Yugoslavia. He is currently a Puffin Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute. Scahill is the author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. PANIC! PANIC! PANIC!

It sure is fun watching poor old Dick Cheney stumbling all over the right wing airwaves, desperately trying to poison the jury pool and dodge a VERY long stretch in a federal prison. I only saw clips of his interview with Chris Wallace on FOX Noise on Sunday. Someone described it as a starry-eyed teenage girl interviewing one of the Jonas brothers.

It sure is funny observing the meltdown of Dick and Liz (Cheney - not Burton and Taylor). The trillion dollar shit hammer is about to hit the fan. They're like cornered rats. Oh, man! I'm lovin' this!

Don't take your eye off the Cheneys. For your best entertainment bargain, these two are the show that should not be missed. We're talking essential viewing here!

They had the public's support for torture

People forget that the Bush Administration and in particular VP Chenny believed they had the mass public's support for torture for any terror suspect after 9/11. Many of us wanted mass and painful revenge for anyone who supported the acts of 9/11, or in general were anti-American just after 9/11. Anyone who didn't agree with that were seen as unpatrotic. They wanted to prevent another possible attack and didn't care how it was done.
Until we face that reality, we will accept their actions and never try them in a court of law.

Post Hoc Reasoning: Cheney & Wallace's Specialty
Posted by: jmmartin on Sep 1, 2009 5:59 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Jeremy quotes Cheney's "toadie," Chris Wallace, making an aside before a commercial break on Faux News Sunday, as saying: "I just want to point out to the audience that it is purely coincidental that this country has not been attacked since 9/11.” Scahill asks, what about the soldiers killed in Iraq.

What about them? They probably would have been attacked anyway; after all, we were already in Iraq. Scahill, like Wallace, misses the point. Cheney's reasoning is flawed, not because terrorist attacks were thwarted, but because you cannot extrapolate backward and see a effect as linked to a cause. After this, therefore because of this. Keith Olbermann caught it. He said Cheney's argument was "illogical," though he didn't elucidate.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc. It is the same mistake people make when they link, say, a miracle to prayer. I prayed, I got cured, therefore the cause of the cure was the prayer. That Cheney has fooled so many people with this b.s. is what is bizarre.

JAILTIME with Tiny!!!

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
As much fun as it is watching Darth Chaney evade reality, jump high for his version of "truth", and dodge with mendacity and attitude, this really is working my last nerve! They lied to get this nation embroiled in 2 wars, they screamed TREASON at anyone that dared to ask a question, and their goons reinterpreted the law to authorize torture - which is illegal & immoral in any language on the books and by every standard that can be interpreted unless you are a sociopath!

Can we put these bast--ds in jail now! NO, not the "gentleman's" jail - I want those a@@holes in general population lockup with a guy nicknamed Tiny (who's in for life)! Then maybe they'll understand what real torture is all about! Darth Chaney may actually comprehend that!!!

Cheney knows nothing about War
Posted by: Hiroak on Sep 1, 2009 7:18 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Dick Cheney repeatedly exhibits his ignorance of basic tenets of war. When you have your enemy doing what you want him to (we did exactly what Al Quaida wanted) and you have limited resources you don't attack unless absolutely neccessary. You also do not attack your enemies strength hence the attacks in Spain, UK etc... we deserve no credit for limiting or preventing attacks from terrorists as they are almost impossible to prevent. They know this and they are patient you would think we would have learned that in Vietnam

If you impose restrictive measures on your own people (which we did) you MIGHT catch a terrorist or two but all that will do is serve to teach them your strengths and they will play to your weakness. Yet you will positively ruin and limit your countrymens productivity, freedom, and happiness.

Cheney is an absolute fool and Wallace a sycophant.

Dick Cheney is the very opposite of everything Americans SHOULD hold dear, even if they sometimes don't.

He is predictable, though. EVERYTHING he says is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the truth. Just ask Cheney any question at all, and the great oracle will tell you the opposite of the truth. Just believe the opposite of what he says, and you will become virtually omniscient.

Tell me, though, why anyone is still listening to this worst felon America has ever known, even if to just believe the opposite of what he says? He is excrement.

Confession is good for the Soul

I suppose that only refers to those With a Soul to begin with.
Keep Talking Dickey Boy
Can't wait to see your confession in print!
How do you get a high profile criminal to talk- apparently by giving them a friendly face and Cable network. Sugar Free cookie,Dick?
If anyone is destroying his arguement about torture techniques working - it's Dick himself. Hell Liz is giving US corroborating evidence as a co conspirator- either during the commission of these high crimes or at leat thereafter. What a sweetheart of a Daddy- willing to see his daughter under investigation too. She sure seems to know alot about those events.Could she have been directly involved or could that Highly confidential information been Discussed with her illegally. Did Dick Brief Liz on those documents ("Proving" torture worked) before they were de classified? Even if he lied to her too about the content- he showed intent to share Classified Information with someone who probably did not (does not) have the clearance to hear. Dick is not just hiding behind his daughter- he is willing to see her prosecuted too!!
Wake Up Liz!!Your Daddy ain't just a War Criminal and Traitor, He's a motherfucking asshole! He has been using people and then sacrificing them to save his sorry ass for about 4 decades. I have no doubt Scooter would have a thought or two on 'taking one for the Team', Rove probably wouldn't mind adding his Two cents, or Yoo Or Beybee , or the CIA, or W and I suspect that Ollie North could give you the long range perspective on 'Saving the King' by jumping on his landmines.
Dick never gave a shit about this country, just his ability to weild unfettered powers. Cheney not only sacrificed this country for his own personal interests and delusions of Grandeur- He pulled off a Coup!
He undermined the Office of the President by keeping him ONLY "basically" informed. "Deciders" can only decide if they have all the information- otherwise the person who held back information essentially decided.
He usurped both Houses of Congress (unless some Repugs would like to confess as part of the coup or as a plea bargain), By Straddling both Branches as if the Colossus of Rhodes, protecting his entire 'domain'.
He coerced the CIA to Tamper with Intel Reports.
He ran roughshod of the Justice Dept
He hired and maintained a Propaganda outlet.
He no doubt also had a hand in Wiretapping and Spying on Citizens and our Free Press journalists.
And frankly I still have questions about that Anthrax attacks on Liberal media in the US- which was so quickly pinned on Saddam by John McCain no less. Who gave Saddam a similar strain back in the '80's,Dick? Ya know the stuff he used to kill the Kurds- Isn't supplying Biological Weapons also a war crime?
Then we get into the current War Crimes.

Dick Cheney Highjacked this country and used our money, Resources and Blood to spread is vile loathsome choas around the world- He has committed CrimeS against Humanity- Who wants to take the Hit for him now??
Hang Him Low & slow and then ask him how he feels about torture.

Stop the ad hom and get rational
Posted by: leonardfeingold on Sep 1, 2009 10:46 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Reading these posts one would think Cheney is some sadist or emulator of Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot Castro and Che with their gulags and outright murder. IT is all ad hom.

What are the facts. We were attacked by non govt people.

How do we avoid another attack is the question that the Bush admin faced.

One may disagree with tactics but that is quite different than using ad hom arguments to picture these people as some kind of sadists.

The 2nd question is: Do coerive techniques work. I avoided the word torture because it is too much broad. For example after the foiled plot against Hitler, the conspirators were hung up with piano wire. How does that compare with water boarding or sleep dep;rivation. So one has to be careful in using such a broad word.

Do coercive techniques work. Clearly, they work sometimes. The best proof is during WW 2 where French Resistance cells were destroyed because of coerced confessions. It also worked in the French Algerian war where hideouts and explosives were found.
What those 2 had in common is that information could be easily checked within 20 minutes; hence, the prisoner could not lie and fool his questioners. That is the ideal situation for such techniques.

When you get away from immediate verification it is more difficult to assess.

IS there anyone willing to state that coercive techniques NEVER work.

Here is the basic question: IS it worth being pure and pay the price of losing 3000 of our citizens. Nobody wants to answer that question on the left. Fair enough if you answer yes; that is, better we not coerce and remain pure even if it costs many American lives. Have the courage to answer that rather than pile on Cheney. His motive was not some sadistic pleasure but to save American lives.

One can't have perfect evidence that the coercive techniques worked. We can't do an experiment. But I do notice that the Washington Post changed its tune after reading the memo and gave a balanced picture. Perfection is in heaven, but reading the memos one could easily come to the conclusion that the coercive procedures paid off;
100% certain no. Only death is certain.

Again my question: IF there is some probability that coercvie techniques will save lives, is it more moral to forgo such procedures and allow many people to die. Will I get an answer. I doubt it.

know that they will be able to delay any legal proceedings until they die a natural death. Long before Bush, Cheney, and company will have to claim the fifth when the first question is asked in court they will die. Think about Madoff or Lay, old men don't care, that makes them extremely dangerous. Oh how much fun it would be to send Cheney a box of microwaveable food, and tell him that's all you're going to get to eat until you tell us what we want to hear, but wait would that be torture or would it be justifiable if I get a crooked lawyer to write a memo saying it would be okay. Just a thought.

I just hope to 'who- or whatever' that Cheney is being given enough rope to hang himself.... and Bush, and Rumsfeld, and Rice, Wolfowitz, Pearl, Bolton, et al. These are all very, very sick human beings, if they could even be called that.

They should all have to spend the rest of their natural lives in prison under psychiatric evaluation. In light of so many sickos who have grabbed power and lied to, stolen from, tortured, and mass-murdered millions over the centuries, I'm sure the world would love to try to understand how human beings become so indifferent and depraved.... and how the public is so easily duped.

people forget the centerpiece of this whole affair and that is that it was on Bush and Cheney's watch that 911 happened in the first place. To my mind they were either grossly negligent or actively misfeasant in the happenings on that day. It wasn't as if they weren't warned many times. It isn't as if Bush didn't tell the intelligence officer "while now you've covered your ass" or Cheney didn't tell the young military adjutant who asked if the military stand down order were still in effect "Of course they're still in effect , you haven't heard anything different have you?" These two reprehensible men should be tarred and feathered or worse for what they allowed to happen on 911.

1. We could support impeachment of Bush & Co. This would establish clear limits of federal right and wrong, government balance of power, and accountability. It would also address Obama's use of signing statements around Congress, the same ones we said Bush was a corrupt imperialist dictator for using, and the same ones Obama denounced. He did make the rules vague for something that shouldn't require so much legalese, and could get tempted to do bad things, and we want to help protect him from becoming Bush or worse, don't we?

2. We could with-hold concessional support of Obama's other plans until he takes the left seriously, accounts for his Blackwater re-branded, unaccountable mercenary projects.

3. We could quit with the double standards of these and many other things. Maybe then the left would have some sort of credibility regarding torture.

The Bush Presidency should be known as the disappearing presidency. When the twin towers were hit Bush DISAPPEARED. The Iraq nuclear missiles DISAPPEARED. The CIA tapes of interrigation DISAPPEARED. Bush was nowhere to be found when 'shotgun Dick' disclosed that Valerie Plame was a (covert) CIA agent which was classified information. When our embassy in Serbia burned Bush DISAPPEARED. Bush's Robber Baron presidency has made our money DISAPPEAR. With Voodoo Economics Georgie has made most of our jobs DISAPPEAR. But what would happen if Bush really disappeared? Can you imagine 'Deadeye Dick' with his finger on the nuclear trigger? If that were to happen everyone might just DISAPPEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He did manage to APPEAR just long enough to lobby for and sign into law CORPORATE WELFARE for the international banks. Goodbye Goofball Georgie, have fun in Texass.

I truly feel for the individuals who were the victims of the psychologically depraved American soldiers who committed these heinous acts. But i cant help worrying more about what this means for America and its citizens. We basically are home to this depraved element in our society, yes we will have those who committed these acts and partook in them walking amongst us, but is this element....this moral atrophy simply restricted to the military sector...I'm afraid not. These individuals are going to fill a vast majority of our corporate, police, and prison jobs.

Then why would anyone believe what Buckshot Dick has to say.

His alcohol saturated mind can't distinguish hard facts from his sense of deranged reality.

I find it ironic that a 5 time Vietnam deferred coward would have any stage to talk tough about former Ronald Reagan "Freedom Fighter's", that are now relabeled "Terrorist's".

If this Treason committing felon had been behind bars for his role in the Iran-Contra weapons for cocaine scandle along with Powell, North and others, then there would have been no self-appointed Bu$h II cabal to go around rough-shod with their illegal occupations of nations that had nothing to do with 9/11 in the first place.

Dick has proven time and again he can't control his alcohol consumption and how he avoided jail time is just as questionable as the deranged child abuser from Antioch, Ca..

The U.S. sure has the government it deserves with scum like Dick and his cronies are.

If half the thought and energy were put into re-establishing values, standards, and ethics in this society, we could have a responsible and productive populace that would not tolerate these manipulative acts by people in positions of power.WAKE UP AMERICA! Until we insist on behavior that reflects responsibility by us as a people, a nation, we'll keep having the same pointless arguments and never exercise accountability. Stand fast by the standards and ethics we all should strive to uphold, and create a climate that we all can support.

i'd love to be the one to do it but... someone among our largely gutless television newspeople should corner cheney with this... in the korean war (which eisenhower ended in two months flat as he thought it illegal and wrongheaded...); the chinese and koreans were torturing american GIs, specifically with such as waterboarding, sleep and food deprivation, cold and hot and electrodes – in other words the tech favored by cheney and the psy-ops tormentors. they were then filming 'confessions' by these tortured GIs as 'proof' of american wrongdoings.

truman publicly denounced these things as torture and ridiculed the notion that confessions gained by torture have any validity or value whatsoever.

now truman was a typically warmongering 'liberal' president who presided over the nuking of hiroshima and nagasake, which, as we now know, was solely to show the russkies what we had, knowing full well that japan was beaten and would soon surrender abjectly without killing 300,000 of their defenseless civilians. it was also truman who immunized and imported thousands of nazi war criminals into the west for CIA/police/science. it was turman who granted (long kept secret, this deal), japanese war criminals were immunized in exchange for turning over to the USG its files on what were called 'human being experiments' grotesquely carried out by the japs on the chinese in manchuria... it was truman who gave us the national security state which should now jut be shortened to 'natse.' but even truman saw that these things were torture, vile and unjustifiable.

Lets release ALL of the torture data, AND the results of the torture information and how it was used, so we can collectively make up our minds.

Why Cheney's FOIA request was denied, without comment, makes me think Obama isn't giving us the whole story.

What worries me, is why he doesn't want us to get the whole story.

One can't have perfect evidence that the coercive techniques worked. We can't do an experiment. But I do notice that the Washington Post changed its tune after reading the memo and gave a balanced picture. Perfection is in heaven, but reading the memos one could easily come to the conclusion that the coercive procedures paid off;
100% certain no.

Just a thought.

people forget the centerpiece of this whole affair and that is that it was on Bush and Cheney's watch that 911 happened in the first place.

We basically are home to this depraved element in our society, yes we will have those who committed these acts and partook in them walking amongst us, but is this element....this moral atrophy simply restricted to the military sector...I'm afraid not. These individuals are going to fill a vast majority of our corporate, police, and prison jobs.

Would you ever believe what a multi-convicted drunk driver says?

The U.S. sure has the government it deserves with scum like Dick and his cronies are.

of postings regarding this article are indicative of the distractive nature of the internet.

Start by fighting for Prosecution of the Torturers.

KEEP ASKING ALL POLITICIANS AT ALL PUBLIC EVENTS

"WHY DO YOU SUPPORT TORTURE?"

If they aren't actively calling for enforcement of our Federal Torture Laws,
They DO Support Torture.

SIGN THE PETITIONS
Demanding
both a Commission of Inquiry
and prosecution for all those leaders
in Bush's Administration that
Conspired to Torture at ANGRYVOTERS.ORG

http://ANGRYVOTERS.ORG

Only Prosecution Stops Torture!

Only Prosecution Stops Abuse of Power and
of Our Constitution and Rule Of Law

Only Prosecution Stops Abuse of Power and
of Our Constitution and Rule Of Law
and gives Voters their power back.
The only alternative is un-electing them.

.

In light of so many sickos who have grabbed power and lied to, stolen mobile manuals mobile phones nokia 7900 prism user manual nokia 7900 prism user guide 90210 season 2 90210 seropol5 from, tortured, and mass-murdered millions over the centuries, I'm sure the world would love to try to understand how human beings become so indifferent and depraved.... and how the public is so easily duped.
