Utilizing Public Airwaves, Media Mogul Murdoch Is Big Muscle Behind Fraudulent Astro Turfers

Burrowing inside the radical right's gathering of astroturfers and mouthpieces, AlterNet Reporter Adele Stan discovers what makes the anti-health reform machine tick.

FreedomWorks, led by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, is basically your father's astroturfing outfit, rallying the grumpy-old-man crowd to great effect on behalf of Armey's former K Street clients

ResistNet, the "official community" of Grassfire.org, is a home-made-looking meeting place for gun enthusiasts, militia types, birthers and the most ardent of the Obama-is-Hitler contingent.

Glenn Beck's 9-12 Project draws from the audience for the derangement he displays on his Fox News Channel program, but he has closed down the comments section of his site ever since rowdies at a Tampa town hall that turned violent mentioned Beck as their inspiration to the local newspaper. (However, a link to a schedule of town hall events does appear on the 9-12 Project's home page.)

Of course, there's plenty of crossover among the constituencies of the various sites, and plenty of links among the players.

For instance, Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., who famously predicted that health-care reform would be Obama's "Waterloo," appeared in the video that opened the RightOnline general session. His endorsement also graces the Grassfire.org Web site, as do the plaudits of Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., chairman of the Republican Caucus, who sent in a video message to the RightOnline crowd.

Phillips, the AFP president, worked on Armey's political campaigns.

While Fox News has hardly been secretive about its involvement in the anti-health care cause, the reach of its parent company, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., goes further than the utterances of its pundits over the airwaves, or Beck's 9-12 Project.

The Americans for Prosperity roster of RightOnline conference speakers was heavily populated by those who toil for Murdoch -- fully one-third of the list of 15 -- in addition to two others who have links to Murdoch.

Fox News contributors Michelle Malkin and Jim Pinkerton addressed the crowd, as did columnists John Fund and Stephen Moore of the Wall Street Journal, another News Corp. property. AFP Policy Director Kerpen writes a column for FoxNews.com. Pittsburgh radio host Glen Meakem works for a Clear Channel station whose featured programming includes the Wall Street Journal Report, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. Ronald Kessler writes for NewsMax, which was founded by a former reporter for the New York Post, yet another News Corp.entity.

When I asked Phillips about the Fox/Wall Street Journal connection to his organization, he looked surprised.

"We have someone from Fox News?" he asked.

"Well, Fox News Channel contributors," I replied.

"OK. So, they're not on the payroll of Fox News. Do any of those guys get money from Fox News?"

He's asking me? "I don't know if they're paid by Fox," I said, "but I assume that they are. Do you have a partnership with Rupert Murdoch?"

"Not at all, not at all," he replied with a little laugh. "The fact is, the Wall Street Journal's my favorite newspaper; I love those guys. I like what they write. I look at Steve Moore and John Fund, and those are two of the smartest guys. They're also entertaining, in addition to being philosophically sound.

"I don't know if you've read The End of Prosperity, Arthur Laffer and Steve Moore's book; it's one of my favorite books of the last three or four years. I've really found it to be incisive, so I really like those guys. But there's no partnership -- financially, understood, or anything else."

I checked with the Fox News Washington bureau, and indeed Malkin and Pinkerton are paid by Fox, and are branded by the news channel, listed on the "talent" page of its Web site. Fund and Moore are full-time employees of the Wall Street Journal, and AFP's Kerpen has a weekly platform on Fox's well-traveled Web site.

What Murdoch Hath Wrought

In the cable and broadcast spectrum occupied by Fox News Channel and Fox Television, Murdoch operates through a public trust, as do all cable and broadcast outlets.

Adele M. Stan is AlterNet's Washington bureau chief.

Democracy in action!

No individual can inspire thousands of people to take to the streets without pay unless they're personally motivated. It's fraudulent to call these protests "fraudulent." Let's get down to brass tacks: the Left is insanely jealous that they can't get this kind of turn-out!

Look, I'm not on either side. Health care is way too expensive, but I don't think the government can run it more cheaply than the private sector. I might pick a side if I had read the bill or if I knew anyone who did that could explain it to me, but no one I know has, including my Democrat congresswoman.

We can disagree on the details of health care reform, but let's put an end to this myth that these protests are somehow illegitimate. I know people who go to these tea parties, and I can assure you, it's not organized and no one's being bribed. They just hate the government and are willing to spend a day shouting at their congressman. Is that productive? It depends. Is it productive when left-wing anti-war protesters shout and scream? Is it productive when pro-amnesty college kids waving signs written in Spanish and Arabic storm the stage at Columbia University to scare away the head of The Minuteman Project, even though he was invited to speak? Maybe!

This is the beginning of a civil war. Like other wars of the past, whoever fights harder wins and to the winner goes the spoils. If this country is taken over by illegal aliens, maybe they deserve it because they worked harder, had more kids, and fostered family unity. If America conquers the world through force and free-trade, maybe we deserve it because we just kick ass more than the other guy. If one side shouts out the other side, maybe they deserve to win because they simply care more.

Two things are for certain. 1) The Left will mobilize a well-organized counterprotest and use all the same screaming tactics. 2) When they do, MSNBC will not call it hooliganism; they will call it democracy.

It is time to break up the media conglomerates. We have broken up trusts before it's now once again time ...

This was actually a Republican idea that Teddy Roosevelt helped put into law and enforce ...

Think todays Republicans, or Democrats for that matter, will take on Media Conglomerates? ... LOL!

Let's face it, Obama would never have won the primary if the media didn't hate the Clintons.

Obama would never have won the Presidency if the media machine had attacked him as it attacks other Democrats.

Now the media is back to attacking Obama--and now he's sinking like a rock.

So is ONLY the phony “right” guilty of ASTROTURF ?
Posted by: Mister_PsyOps on Aug 20, 2009 2:42 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This is complete BS as anyone that has a ghost of clue well understands. We live under an Astroturf propaganda state and have for generations.

What kind of a “rightwing” would bloat the central government up by almost double under an obvious Fascist clown like GW Bush? Even sham NeoCon “conservatives” could not get away with that kind of corruption without massive establishment cooperation.

Obama-care is light years from single payer. As a watered down farce it is designed to fail while runway puppet Obama continues to smile and prosecute his Wall Street paymaster’s real agenda:

1] genocide 9/11“war on terror” (i.e. bogus war OF terror for global resources)
2] Wall Street “bailouts” (alias public looting for Organized Corporate Crime FASCISM)
3) FISA spy state
4) erosion of what is left of the democratic process by mass extortion and propaganda.

These labels are all nonsense meant to deceive a gullible population.

In the end, this is all about fully organized corporate gangster style Fascism on the public nickel. A naked state policy never talked about at the MSM or its limited hangout “alternative” decoy spin-offs.

Why can't regular people disagree with this bill without being called fake?
Posted by: humanvalues on Aug 20, 2009 4:03 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Here's what I don't get

It would seem by the author's tone that ANYONE that disagrees with Obama's $1,000,000,000,000+ (yes, ONE TRILLION and up) "health care reform" bill is a paid, right-wing shill.

Did it ever occur that MAYBE, just MAYBE people DON'T want this? MAYBE small business owners don't want a this bill will penalize any American with a 2.5 percent tax if they don’t have government-approved health care?

That it STILL won't cover all uninsured Americans, and will decimate Medicare for the ones that are covered now?

That it will raise taxes to over 50 PERCENT in states like California and New York?

This bill is NOT THE ANSWER, and if any of you people that are all about it because you blindly support anything Obama says, maybe you should try READING the bill. You might actually learn something.

When it comes to policies, government always has to increase the number of pages exponentially. Obama made a grave error not taking the lead. I expected him to do some leading but I'm getting disappointed with him for not taking a stand. What does it mean for the Democratic Party to be the Party of the People anymore when this same party won't support health care for all but instead for the already privileged. I have been unemployed before and found out just how expensive health care can be. I don't think Washington or the right punks on the far right get it.

Can someone define astroturfing? Your "my niche" versus "their niche" has surpassed...
Posted by: ABetterFuture on Aug 20, 2009 5:20 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...my level of niche code-words spread about by the so-called right and so-called left. Oh, but you spoke so well!

I followed some of the links, and as best as I can tell, "astroturfers" are "hate-speechers", because you hate folks speaking opinions, especially those opposed to the folks in power in Washington.

Would that make anti-Bush folks (circa 2002-2008) retro-astro-turfers? Or just weeds, in your opinion?

P.S. I think all you chumpions of the status quo, whether you're cheerleading for R's or the D's, are pretty damn worthless. You managed to string together a paltry 2,500 loudmouths between you for the events the author places so much (self)importance on, in order to further attempt to subvert our liberties.

MOST Americans are totally indoctrinated and propagandized into the state capitalist system...
Posted by: Quist on Aug 20, 2009 6:22 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...by the corporate, insurance and banking oligarchy that is truly in power.

It does not matter if these Americans consider themselves the psuedo left, the right, the center, Democrats, Republicans, or Libertarians...they have totally bought into this indoctrination and propaganda.

Unfortunately it is the minority of independent, rational, honest, aware, and critical thinking Americans that realize that this whole healthcare debate is a farse...as it was with the Clintons in the 90s. Some form of public/socialized healthcare has worked pretty damn well for most, if not all, modern industrialized countries...but the facts do not matter when so many Americans are brainwashed, ignorant, or apathetic to the REALITY of healthcare.

So please go back to your Faux News or almost any other American media source that keeps feeding the ignorant Americans this BS indoctrination, spin, disinformation, misdirection, contradictions, hypocrisy, and propaganda...or you can wake up and actually start thinking for yourself.

My problem with the right is that they have become too lazy to contemplate independent thoughts and analyze what's really going on! They listen to the likes of Rush, Newt, Glenn Beck - whose lies are purchased by their paychecks from the Corporate Oligarchy! The very prostitutes they continue to vote into office, are writing and rewriting the rules in favor of the Corporate Estate. These people many of whom have Medicare yet refuse to acknowledge it for "The Government" program that it is. Under the guise of "patriotism", "free-markets", "individual rights", et. al. - these wing-nuts buy the bridge and then don't want to recognize that much like Madoffs investors - THEY HAVE BEEN BAMBOOZLED!

While I understand their fear, we as a country must face it and move thru it together as a country. And I also believe that it is going to take all of US hammering at our Congresspeople to keep them honest, and let them know our views. But with 48 million of US without insurance, this is a moral imperative! Hopefully future generations won't look back and ask WTH were they thinking! It is time that we regain our nation from the corporate oligarchy that has hijacked our government for their own bottom line!

Denying the existence of "grass roots" conservatism / anti-socialism by calling it artificial "astro-turf" is SILLY!

The DEM(agogue)s thought they could remake the medical system "from the top" without open Congressional Committee hearing, etc? With no accountability about who was writing the Bill? At least Hilary had the honest to put her plan on paper.

Despicable! Now they are surprises people have doubts? Get serious.

Try reading the BILL to the American people and explaining what each provision means.

Attacking Newscorp is just giving them free publicity. Unfortunately that is all Alternet is doing these days is attacking anybody and everybody they are prejudiced against whether it makes sense to or not. How about some detailed and thoughtful analyses instead of hysterical self righteous chest beating.

What Kind of Health Care?
Posted by: Adastra on Aug 20, 2009 9:43 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It is my fervent hope the results will remind us that despite those posing as a "grassroots" movement astroturf has never had roots at all. It is a strictly artificial product that mimics grass, but is without foundation--and will never grow or flower.

In spite of all the outrage over "socialized medicine", I believe we should focus our aim on "civilized medicine." People I have heard from who live in England and Canada are quite happy with their health care and its lower costs, better access and professional quality. Why should the US lag behind the rest of the civilized world on all these standards?

And why should we trust elected "representatives" who represent, not the voters in their states or districts, but the insurance, pharmaceutical, medical technology corporations and their obscenely obese profits?

With love under will,

Bob, Adastra,
The Wizzard of Jacksonville

May also help with the "aging problem" in America. Why should the young pay the health care for the old farts when they block health care for the young - who pay ALL the bills?

Also, why not make the required MINIMUM age for military service 65? That would help with the "aging problem" too. Why should the young give their lives to kill those innocents abroad that the old point out to them - and who then beat their chests righteously while they watch the carnage and running blood on TV.

With the hippocratic oath we really have a service that is socialist in nature. Doctor's take an oath to serve people who need urgent medical care. So why do we attempt to pay for a socialized service through capitalist means? There are only two solutions. Make healthcare a capitalist service by doing away with the oath, or make the payment structure socialist by providing a taxpayer-funded public healthcare option. Anything else and our healthcare system will always be a joke.

Americans are no longer capable of coming to an agreement and compromise through civilized debate. The only way anything ever gets done is by force or by crisis.

Every issue is turned into a battle of left vs right, and then the issue is forgotten while this "left" and "right" duke it out. The ensuing battle becomes the issue, and score is kept to see how many battle who wins. This is a recipe for civic paralysis, while the elite watches and rubs its hands, because this state of affairs suits its purposes.

One of the most pleasing ways to eliminate the obesity problem in this country would be to give citizens miracle berry so that nasty healthy food will taste amazing. Since obesity is such a big problem, this could save money when it comes to health care. Ok I'm just kidding!

The writer of Democracy in Action says she 'knows a couple of tea baggers' and they are not bribed. Well, I know MORE than a couple of tea baggers who not only have been bribed but also have been horribly misled and their worst sentiments played upon. My brother is a racist and can't bear the idea of a black man being president and graduated from Harvard. So the right wing exploiters TELL him repeatedly that Obama is "not a citizen" and tell him that Obama is a socialist and a communist and a fascist and a muslim and that Obama is a danger to him and other white people. These right wing exploiters care about keeping their corporate profits at all costs and don't care if they stir up the most dehumanizing conduct. Are these deluded ones, like my brother and his friends, 'illegitimate'? Yes, because they are lied to in order to stir up their hatred of colored people. They are grossly manipulated just as Goebbels grossly manipulated Germans into horrific acts.

why aren't we, the people, taking on Murdoch and stopping HIM? He is the worst kind of sleeze bag and should absolutely NOT have the kind of power he has. He owns FOX and the Wall Street Journal (which has recently been turned into the Wall Street Comic Book). He and him minions broadcast day and night into the minds of the American people - and no one can stop him.

Murdoch truly isn't an American Citizen and should be deported back to Australian.

Does anyone have any good ideas how to get rid of his power to destroy our country?

Now the media is back to attacking Obama--and now he's sinking like a rock.

So is ONLY the phony “right” guilty of ASTROTURF ?

You managed to string together a paltry 2,500 loudmouths between you for the events the author places so much (self)importance on, in order to further attempt to subvert our liberties.

...by the corporate, insurance and banking oligarchy that is truly in power.

Despicable! Now they are surprises people have doubts? Get serious.

What Kind of Health Care?

This is a recipe for civic paralysis, while the elite watches and rubs its hands, because this state of affairs suits its purposes.

has it really boiled down to who we approve to AstroTurf?

We do realize Axelrod and Astroturf go hand in hand, right? He is the master at it, after all, what the right wish they could be, and kinda are.

SHARING! Why doesn't America just share health benefits with each other. It doesn't mind sharing war with other nations.
