Republicans Misstep on Sotomayor Attacks: When did Newt and the Gang Become Experts on Race?

By C. Nicole Mason, AlterNet. Posted June 9, 2009.

According to them, anyone who believes we have not achieved racial equality and work to level the playing field can be considered a racist.

If I attend a black Church and tithe once a week, does that make me a racist? How about if I donate my time to an organization committed to ensuring young black men avoid prison; would that make me a racist? Probably not.

For Judge Sonia Sotomayor, however, Republicans and Newt Gingrich would like us to believe that these actions alone make one a racist.

Whatever happened to the good old-fashioned definition of a racist, where one had to believe in ideas of racial superiority and use those beliefs to discriminate or cause harm to other groups deemed inferior?

This so-called new definition of racism, where attempting to right historic and present-day discrimination or having pride in your racial or ethnic background makes an individual racist, has me a little confused. According to the new definition of racism -- let's call it neo-racism -- anyone who believes we have not achieved racial equality despite years of efforts and work to level the playing field, can be considered a racist. Does that make sense?

In Sotomayor's case, embracing her Puerto Rican background rather than denying it; working as a young lawyer to end discrimination against Latinos and by extension many other disadvantaged groups, including women; and acknowledging that there is indeed a difference between her experiences growing up as a Latina and those of white men has made her a target. The question is, a target for what and for whom?

In her career, Sotomayor has decided over 96 cases involving issues related to race. Of those times, she and her panel rejected claims of discrimination roughly 78 times and agreed with claims just 10 times. Of the opinions rejecting claims of discrimination, Sotomayor dissented only twice.

Targeting and calling Sotomayor a racist is a calculated risk on the part of Republicans and conservatives. It necessarily entails the majority of the public buying into a definition of racism that is logically hard to follow and historically inaccurate.

Rather than focusing on convincing us that she is a racist, they should focus on more substantive matters like her positions on key issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, immigration, gun control, affirmative action and education.

I would also urge Republicans to take a long hard look in the mirror and reflect on the reasons they elected Michael Steele as chairman of the Republican National Committee -- I doubt it was solely because he was the "best man" to lead the Grand Old Party.

Depending on whom you ask, race relations and race discussions have gotten better or worse since the election of Barack Obama.

The irony in all of this is that some of the longest-standing members of the "Old Boy's Network" have now appointed themselves as the experts on race relations in this country.

The reaction to Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court shows that we still have a long way to go, but we are headed in the right direction.

If I point out that Blacks and Latinos fall short of Whites in nearly every single endeavor...

...am I a racist?

Firefighter case may keep Sotomayor in hot seat

Why are the evil Honkies unable to subject Asians (4.4% of US pop) and Jews (3% of US pop) to the same degradation as Blacks (12.4) and Latinos (14.8)?

From Wikipedia

Asians, not whites, excel in standards on IQ, SATs, MCAT, LSAT tests. If you are going to state that Minorities underperform because standardized testing is written by whites for whites, how do you explain this phenomenon? If you are going to claim that the criminal justice system is biased against minorities, how do you explain that whites are more likely to be sentenced to prison than Asians?

Sotomayor believes something to the effect of "A wise Latina will come to a better decision then a White man". I believe brown people are inferior to whites.

Sotomayor has achieved much in her lifetime and deserves nothing but praise for her progression from ethnic deprivation to national prominence, but her nomination is the least of our problems. She will be a nothing presence in a court that is already replete with politicians and not jurists as we venture further from the advances society gained during the Warren Court years. Gingrich, Limbaugh, et al. wield influence only among the hate-filled gang of thugs known as conservatives whose progeny is deeply-rooted in Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon and the innumerable wackos they spawned. Until some political party emerges that will renounce, reject and eliminate all such ilk from within our midst, I fear that we will never purge ourselves from the comparable scorn the Germans faced post-Hitler. They had the courage to bring about the change that has led them to modernity with dignity. We are still creating gulags, stalags and goose-stepping "brownshirts" known as Republicans.

The utter hypocrisy of these knuckleheads is so much fun to watch, isn't it? The very sight of these racist assholes posing as angels of racial sensitivity is too good to be true. Oh, thank you, fate! These really are interesting times to be alive.

Six months ago - even before inauguration day - I predicted two terms for Barack Obama. At the time, it was a bold and cheeky prediction. Not any more. Now it is a foregone conclusion. Newt? Sarah Palin? John Boehner?

Bring 'em on!

Sonia Sotomayor said that a wise Latina woman would usually make better decisions than a white male. To claim that this is "racist," as the right-wing drones moan, is nonsense.

History has bourne out her claim. Who would deny that a a wise Latina woman would have avoided the financial meltdown supervised by Alan Greenspan and Hank Paulson, both white males? Who would deny that a wise Latina woman would have abjured our undertaking unnecessary wars in Vietnam and Iraq, engineered by white men such as Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld in the former, and MacNamara and Lyndon Johnson in the latter? Who would deny that a wise Latina would have nixed a "guns for hostages" ploy supported by a white men such as Ronald Reagan and Caspar Weinberger?

All the evidence is in. White men have been responsible for every major debacle that has befallen our country. Add to that the majority of white men who decided to be activist judges in 2000 in order to appoint as President someone who rivaled James Buchanan in ineptitude, and you have a plenitude of white, male incompetence. I'll take Sotomayor's wise Latina judgment any day.

Take Michael Steele, for instance. When the American people elected the first African American as President last November, the Republican National Committee decided that the GOP needed a face lift - actually a face dye. It was obvious that, given their history of policies that are utterly hostile to people of color, they couldn't have just another white guy as their spokesman of opposition to an Obama administration. There are a few (very few) black men who now earn their reputations on the talk show circuit spouting the talking points of the Republican party. A couple of them, I hate to admit, are fairly astute - like Ron Christie, for instance, who regularly appears on MSNBC - a very bright fellow any way you slice it or dice it. You would think that the geniuses who run the RNC would have signed up someone like him as chairman, wouldn't you? Yeah, me, too - but that would have been out of character for them. No. They just had to hire the dumbest black guy they could possibly find.

Yesterday in a speech before a gathering of party hacks in Maryland, Steele proclaimed that the gloves were about to come off and that the "honeymoon" between President Obama and the grand old party was over:

"We are going to take this president on with class. We are going to take this president on with dignity. This will be a marked contrast to the shabby and classless way that the Democrats and the far left spoke of President Bush."

Class and dignity, huh? QUESTION: Where the hell was this knucklehead when his party was trying to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about an affair with a half-witted intern - in solitary confinement? By the way, between you and me and the parking meter, Malcolm X had a term for people like Michael Steele: House Nigger. You want to talk about the worst kind of cow towing, Uncle Tom darkie? The guy is a walking, talking stereotype! Somewhere in that eternal void, you may be sure, Stepin Fetchit is laughing his ass off:

"Hee! Hee! Hee! Oh, Mistah White folks you sho' is sly!!"

I need a drink

Racism does not explain why the Repugs also waged a outright Sexist campaign against Pelosi- referring to her not so coyly as "Pussy Galore".
Nor does Racism explain why Bill O'Reilly has the audacity to assume he need only inform women that they can get a late term abortion from Dr. Tiller for $5,000. Did he think he was providing Us succubus' a Public service announcement with that bit of information?
Got to give it to G.Gordon Liddy- he doesn't even try to hide his misogynistic attitude- Openly relating his concerns that Sotomayors Menstrual cycle may pose a problem with her intellectual abilities.
This is not an Attack on her ethnicity, this is the same old "He man Woman haters club' mantra.
What these misogynistic assholes (and Racists) are actually admitting is that they have no confidence in their own gender/race demographic. You can almost Smell the fear oozing from their pores. They don't think that if the field is finally leveled they will make the grade. These are the Bullies on the playground who demand everyone play by their rules, giving themselves an unfair advantage because they lack the self esteem to compete without such considerations.
This is not just a tactic used by the white Good Ol' Boys club- it's the same one used throughout the world and throughout time. Men of all races have proven they are terrified of women. These arguments have spanned since Eve was condemned for eating the Apple of Knowledge (which otherwise would have left the human race nothing more than animals) to now the Statements about Sotomayors 'lack in intellectual abilities'.
Frankly these old tired claims say more about the fear men have of women than anything substantial about the women themselves. Perhaps we should call it 'Ovary Envy'instead.

My dear Mr. Nihilist:
Employing statistics taken out of context and without regard to the deep-seated social factors surrounding them is both mendacious and indicative of a shallow intellect. Frankly, if the only thing I had going for me was a congenital dearth of melanin, I'm not sure I'd be going around pointing that out to people.

Years ago I read a GOP member said "We like our Blacks quiet" Right now if a person of color wants to be in the GOP they must do one of two things: Deny any history of oppression because many members of the GOP today are racist,Thats how the party came to power in the south in the first place. Second and this is a big help provide entertainment. Either have musical talent or the ablity to act crazy. Oh one more thing which is an unwitten rule : must defer the white males .Ever if there is a PHD behind your name play it down example how many folks know Condi Rice is a PHD?.
Now wonder why Colin Powell has such a hard time with the current GOP?

There is an article on townhall.com this morning explaining why Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck are patriotic Americans who are being unfairly reviled. Every townhall article is followed by a comments thread. Here's a sample reaction to today's article re the right-wing media: "Sean, Rush, and Glenn are all great Americans. They educate us about the issues...Anyone listening to them gets that." The poster (April22 in TX) goes on to explain that liberal bias in the MSM prevents their fairness etc.. Ordinarily I would respond there with a comment of my own, perhaps pointing out that it's inaccurate to call Sotomayor a racist when 80% of her rulings in racial discrimination cases have been against the plaintiff, but I thought, for a change, I would come here and see if anyone else cares to take up the fight. Registration on townhall.com is easy and the administrators have always tolerated my liberal posts; in fact, they tolerate anything, including the advocacy of the murder of all Democrats, so you won't have any trouble getting on.

Why do Newt and the gang receive so much media attention? The level of hypocrisy has astronomically increased as the Rethugnikans have lost Congressional seats! Why are they and their twisted ill-logic and re-definitions even note-worthy!

Judge Sotomayor is a Latina from the inner city that did well! She worked hard, and made it through Princeton and Yale - a real role model that anyone can point to as an example of how hard work can pay off! She is also an example of what a well qualified JURIST is, unlike some of the politically appointed hacks currently on the bench!

The thing that gets me - for all of the Grand Ole Party's (aka Dixiecrats) talk about inclusiveness, these attacks on this Judge are never about her qualifications - but once again are about the divisiveness with which they can play to their small, closed minded base! Do they even wonder why they are the minority party!!??

Who gives a rats ass what a FORMER elected RupubliTard has to say about RACE of all things. Newt couldn't care less about race or racial equality and we ALL know it. This is simply an attack by some angry old rich white boy because his party didn't get to choose the justice. It wouldn't matter if President Obama selected Dick (and he is a dick) Cheney for the position, the party of NO would be on the same attack. Why didn't Newt and the rest speak up when Alito spoke about empathy and mistreatment of his ancestors? This fake outrage is very obvious to everyone who's even slightly astute. As for the rest...well you're suckers anyway and you're gonna believe what ever these fringe lyers say anyway. No...save it Newt...thanks but no thanks for your sudden interest in race. Blow it out your ass because that's about all it's worth!!!

Do you even know that Hispanics are not a different race? They are Caucasian! You know, another word for WHITE. That's the fundamental problem with those of a racist bent, they are not very knowledgeable about the real world. To brand a Puerto Rican as racist because of cultural experiences or preferences is like calling an Italian a racist because of liking pasta.

The pot stirers who post opinions contrary to what our Founders envisioned serve to sharpen the wit of those of us who still hold hope for a more egaliterian and humane society, and who truly believe in the brotherhood of man. So, what do the pot stirers have to be proud of?
Their ignorance?
Their transparent bigotry?
Their fear of not conforming to what they've been told is right and proper by other ignorant bigots?
Their assumptions, stated as facts, and pulled out of thin air?
Their air of self-righteousness in the face of irrefutable FACTS?
The belief that they represent a majority of us, when in fact, they're a rapidly vanishing minority?
It appears too many Americans are proud of all the foregoing, and rather than being a contribution to our society, serve as a reminder of what we're trying to put behind us.

Both went to good schools via Affirmative Action; both were viewed as stupid since they got in as Affirmative Action admissions. How each coped in very different ways; why Thomas has spent his career trying to pull down the ladder that helped him rise.

More examples of Republican Hypocrisy when it comes to race
Posted by: Kym525 on Jun 10, 2009 10:35 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
They're really not that difficult to find.

Let's see:
Clarence Thomas
Condeleeza Rice
Colin Powell
Michael Steele
Bobby Jindal
Alan Keyes
Alberto Gonzales
Linda Chavez - what ever happened to her?

Alan Keyes, who makes Pat Buchanan look like a Che Guevara lefty pinko, should have been their candidate. His conservative credentials were far more impeccable than those of McCain. So, can anyone tell me why the Limbaughs, Hannitys, Becks, Coulters and the GOP themselves couldn't align themselves with their ideological twin?

Could it be his blackness? Yes.

The truth is this--white males--especially those in the GOP--are intimidated by minorities who succeed, even those who share their basic politcal/social philosophy. An intelligent man or woman of color goes against everything they've been taught as to our supposed "inferiority". Ironically, the GOP will shoot themselves in the mouth (unfortunately this is not literal) as when they accused Obama of being an "elitist" for having attended an Ivy League school and being an intelligent man. One would think that Obama's life story--how he grew up poor and without a father--and managed through dedication, family and hard work--rose to the highest office in the land, would be a lesson for everyone.

The GOP bigots are quick to dismiss Sotomayor's accomplishments, and are quick to put her down, especially because she may happen to have "liberal" leanings. Remember all the nastiness surrounding both Barack and Michelle Obama--both have Ivy League degrees and yet the far-right white guy contingent couldn't stop going on about their so-called 'elitism'.

This is a group who spend a LOT of time, especially with their ignornant talking asses--about how minorities don't want to work, don't value education and want to be on welfare. When forced to face those of us who don't fit that stereotype, they go on the attack. The GOP bigot contingent cannot attack Sotomayor on her record or on her educational or judicial abilities, so instead they go on inference and innuendo.

The values of education and hard work--both traits Sonia Sotomayor has in quantity--are nothing new to minority communities. It is our communities that have been the hardest hit with cuts to education. The bottom line is that the GOP bigots are a group of white men and their enablers, who simply do not want anyone of the wrong skin tone to succeed. As long as black and brown people can be depicted as gangbangers and baby mamas, they will continue to use those images to frighten their core constituency into more draconian measures to "keep those people in line".

This is why racism sucks! One has to make some serious intellectual leaps in order to make the myth of racial supremacy fit. The GOP is struggling to understand how this "mongrel black guy" is sitting in the Oval Office with his beautiful and highly accomplished black wife, their adorable little girls, and of course, The First Grandma.

Lastly to honkythenihilist: anyone who posts "statistics" from a questionable source such as Wikipedia, deserves not to be taken as anything more than a racist trying to dress themselves up as reasonable.
