Obama Makes a Terrible Mistake by Not Releasing Torture Photos

By Cenk Uygur, AlterNet. Posted May 14, 2009.

America has to face that we did what is in those pictures. The longer we cover it up, the more culpable we all become.

This is an unbelievable moment. Dick Cheney's PR offensive over the last month actually worked. Barack Obama just crumbled and will follow Cheney's command to not release the new set of detainee abuse pictures.

By the way, if you hadn't figured it out by now, that's why you saw every Cheney in the world on television arguing that torture works and that releasing more information would gravely harm the troops. They weren't worried about what was already released; they were worried about what was going to get released. They were trying to pre-empt the most damaging thing of all - the pictures that show the torture.

Just talking about torture doesn't really do it for the American people. But when they see pictures, they get it. That's why Bush had to apologize profusely and throw a few low-level soldiers under the bus when the Abu Ghraib pictures came out. You think there would have been anywhere near that level of controversy or accountability (such that it was) without the pictures?

How many Americans have heard of Bagram Air Base and how we tortured people to death there? A scant few. How many would have heard of it if there were pictures of detainees shackled from the ceiling in a Palestinian hanging or bleeding to death? Pictures are worth a billion words.

You know why? Television! If something isn't on television, it didn't happen. And television producers are obsessed with visuals (makes some sense since it's a visual medium, but their obsession winds up dumbing down the news if there aren't any pictures or video to go along with an important story).

Television has a multiplier effect. The New York Times story on how we beat a man named Dilawar to death at Bagram just sits there and whoever reads it, reads it. And then, it's done. On television stories spread and multiply and get spread to other channels and other mediums. Television doesn't just report the news; it decides what the news is.

So, that is what this whole fight has been about - the pictures. And now Obama adopted Cheney's position that it endangers national security to release the pictures and he will be saddled for the rest of time with the obligation to fight Cheney's battle for him. And anytime any reasonable person makes a case that as a free and open democracy we should know what our government did, the right-wing will counter with, "Even Obama thinks it endangers national security!"

The reason why this is such a maddening argument is that it is so f'in obvious that the real problem isn't releasing the pictures; it's what we did in the pictures. The argument that Obama so stupidly accepted just now shifts the blame from the people who committed the abuse to the people who want to uncover it and put an end to it.

If you released the pictures and show how the "enhanced interrogation" memos directly led to these abuses, there would be no more torture debate. Everyone could see with their own eyes the horrific results of torture. Now instead, Obama has not just protected the torturers, but empowered them. They now get to claim they tried to protect America and that anyone who tries to show their misdeeds endangers America.

Obama's Latest Effort to Conceal Evidence of Bush Era Crimes ~ Glenn Greenwald

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It's difficult to react much to Obama's complete reversal today of his own prior decision to release photographs depicting extreme detainee abuse by the United States. He's left no doubt that this is what he does: ever since he was inaugurated, Obama has taken one extreme step after the next to keep concealed both the details and the evidence of Bush's crimes, including rendition, torture and warrantless eavesdropping. The ACLU's Amrit Singh -- who litigated the thus-far-successful FOIA lawsuit to compel disclosure of these photographs -- is exactly right:

The reversal is another indication of a continuance of the Bush administration policies under the Obama administration. President Obama's promise of accountability is meaningless, this is inconsistent with his promise of transparency, it violates the government's commitment to the court. People need to examine these abusive photographs, but also the government officials need to be held accountable.

Andrew Sullivan, one of Obama's earliest and most enthusiastic supporters, wrote of today's photograph-concealment decision and yesterday's story of Obama's pressuring Britain to conceal evidence of Binyam Mohamed's torture:

Slowly but surely, Obama is owning the cover-up of his predecessors' war crimes. But covering up war crimes, refusing to prosecute them, promoting those associated with them, and suppressing evidence of them are themselves violations of Geneva and the UN Convention. So Cheney begins to successfully coopt his successor. . .

~~~
John Aravosis said Obama's logic was "a bit Bushian." Steve Hynd observes that "Obama Trades Our Principles For Cheneyism." TPM decalres: "Obama falls back on Bushisms." Dan Froomkin writes: "Obama Joins the Cover-Up."
Why Are Bush and Cheney So Confident?
Posted by: DrBrian on May 14, 2009 1:55 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Many of us were shocked when Bush didn't issue a flurry of last-minute pardons for his co-conspirators as his father had done. Bush, Cheney and others have openly admitted that they authorized torture; in other words, they have publicly confessed to war crimes. So why are they so confident?
You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to suspect that the fix was already in. Bush strutted and Cheney wheeled off into the sunset knowing that their backsides were protected.
To me the question is not whether this happened, it's why.
On a related note, we could air films of animals being slaughtered on TV, especially around dinnertime. Who knows? Maybe even meat eaters will get the message. Just a thought.
Mistake? Hardly! It is becoming abundantly clear that the Obama administration is just a continuation of the Bush administration, up to and including protecting and enriching Bush/Cheney. Why continue the wars? Because of the war industry's profits which are funneled into the Bush/Cheney pockets? What about the betrayal on gay issues? Well Bush/Cheney were bigots. Why hide the torture photos? To protect Bush/Cheney, of course. Look anywhere and Obama is desperately struggling not only to protect Bush/Cheney but continue those policies, up to and including enriching them. My guess is that by the 2016, Obama will have erected statues, great, larger than life statues, bronze statues to his heroes, his beloved predecessors. Sickening! Sickening!
If he's not releasing photos because he feels it will endanger the troops I find his logic flawed. What endangered the troops was allowing them to torture people in the first place, allowing it to continue to be obfuscated isn't going to change that for the better. Additionally, now people (including the terrorists) will be sitting around wondering "Well what the hell did they do that was more horrific than what was already released to the point where they won't show it?"
Of course, it's not like if he released the photos Al Qaeda's going to swear off the destruction of America anyway.
Boneheaded move by Obama. Getting this shit all out into the open and prosecuting the people who did it is the only way to both redeem ourselves and move on.
Obama changed his mind and that doesn't set well with most of us. He knows that. There has to be a reason for not releasing the pictures. As the article mentions, everyone named 'Cheney' was all over the TV this weekend defending Dick. So he was ready for the big day and all the noise that would follow. He has retained far too much power and no one will tell him to 'just go away'. These pictures are a huge axe over his head. Logically we should be seeing these pictures today, but just maybe it's better to wait until they serve two purposes: Get rid of Dick once and for all and for us to find out what really happened. They can probably be subpoened and used as evidence in the upcoming trials and lawsuits. So, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Feith, etc. get to wait until Obama is damned good and ready to release the pictures. Today might just be too convenient for them. Now they can sweat for a while. Thanks, ANNA
(And it is likely that he will be running against someone possibly even WORSE than Dick Cheney in 2012.)
He said he would release the photos, and now he's reversed himself and told all of us, "Fuck You!"
The president is a LIAR. He can't be trusted. He's lied about many things he promised to do when he was running for office. He's gone back on his promises time and again. He's chosen the wrong people to install in positions of power. He's let us all down.
I hope he's a one-term President, and I will actively work to see that happens.
I seem to recall obama talking about having more transparency in government.
Guess obama has decided to aid and abet mass torturers/criminals from our previous regime. He has also decided that we should all share in our government's crimes instead of stopping them.
PUNISH TORTURERS NOW!!!
If we do not imprison the criminals responsible for setting torture policy, we will all suffer further.
I can't see why so many people want to view pictures of more terrorists being led around by their nuts or standing on a chair with a hood on their head.
Is it some kind of morbid curiosity? I think you have to ask, who REALLY wants this to happen and why?
Do the Muslims want this? No they will be humiliated.
Do the armed forces want this? No - they know it will cause trouble.
So who would want this to happen other than some self serving political hacks who want to make some kind of statement.
Let’s Get Real
Posted by: iris89 on May 14, 2009 11:37 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Let’s Get Real
First, I think it is just plain dumb to care so much about what happens to good for nothings that are guilty with respect horrible crimes. NOW WHEN WILL ATTENTION BE GIVEN WHERE IT BELONGS? To wit, to their unfortunate victims?
Second, Many try to cover up the terrible wrongs committed by members of this crime against humanity – 9/11/2001 – by this evil and wicked organization – Al Queida under the direction of Muslim religious leader Sheik Osama (Usama) bin Ladin. This cover-up is of course by evil groups and individuals that sympathize with their evil and wicked ways. For details, go to:
CONSPIRACY THEORIES THE BANE OF TRUTH
Click Here
Third, Individuals and groups that light the proverbial fuse are responsible for all that follows including what happens to them. For details, go to:
Sponsors of Unprovoked Attacks and Criminal Acts Responsible For All That Occurs:
Click Here
And,
The Sponsors of Unprovoked Attacks and Criminal Acts Responsible For All That Occurs: the Palestine situation in Gaza.
Click Here
Fourth, Groups responsible for removing peace from the world should be dissolved. Wars should be eliminated and at present one religion is responsible for over 90% of the violence on earth as pointed out by an Australian newspaper as follows:
"Did you know that 90-95% of the conflicts in the world today are Muslims fighting non-muslims or each other? " [source - The Weekend Australian, November 26-27, 2005 AD]"
I am getting very tired of hearing Palestinians and other Ishmaelite crying crocodile tears and always trying to put the blame for what they do on others such as their conspiracy weavers tried to do about who did 9/11/2001 attack on the World Trade Center, etc. Screaming against what they call wrongful occupations when they are guilty of occupying Byzantine territory, Palestine which belongs to the Israelites [see Numbers the 34 th. Chapter in any Bible for proof of this, and their outright greed as they have over 98% of the Middle East, but still greedly want the less than 2% belonging to their sister tribe Israel] - its time we get real and put an end to this so the world can stop experiencing continuous Ishmaelite induced strife such as shooting rockets at Israel.
Solution, dissolve this false religion and rid the earth of at least 90% of the violence. But of course the politicians will not do what is needed since as Jeremiah 10:23 says, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." (Authorized King James Bible; AV). To read detailed information, go to the following article:
When Should A Religion Be Dissolved In The Interest Of World Peace?
I'm just as disappointed (if not outraged) like most other commenters on this article. Don't just let this one slip out of our hands. Call your representatives and tell them that you demand transparency, you demand to know what YOUR government has done.
I don't normally raise such a call to action, but we are so close to punishing those responsible, don't let this momentum stop!
I could be wrong though. It's just that America has such short term memories. Despite the damage Bush did in his first term, he still made it to second term and ditto for Reagan and Clinton in their times. In all these decades, the only way I have seen an incumbent party get held accountable was a strong 3rd party showing to teach the two parties a lesson in paying attention to the electorate's needs. 1992 was a perfect example. I would have thought 1980 too but it seems that Anderson didn't make much of a dent there. Nader wasn't much of a strong show even in 2000 let alone 2004 or 2008 though I came to admire him in 2008. God, I feel stupid for being reluctant on the last minute and voting for Obama.
This hedging and twisting around around "to charge or not to charge" war criminals -which torturers are- is just denying the USA the status of a country RULED BY LAW.
If Obama really wants CHANGE, then all that has to do with Bagran, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, rendition dungeons must be cleared! Wiping things under an anyway dirty carpet is not clean.
Only a Clean USA can look forward to be respected again in a world that had thought these things had died with Hitler.
They forgave it once in Vietnam - overlooked the "dirty war" in South and Central America. What makes this worse is:
IT WAS DONE IN THE NAME OF THE LAW! Now, the LAW must protect itself and its good name!
As for Obama, he has to show: Is he a President or a Coward?
"When World War I was imminent, the German government skillfully used the construct of "defensive war" to entice the Social Democratic Party to support it... The majority of the Social Democrats, who had the largest of all elected representations in the Reichstag, allowed themselves to be convinced and to show the same degree of patriotic fervor as everybody else when the war actually broke out. The directory of the SDP voted 78 to 14 to approve credits necessary to finance the war, and "nationalistic exaltation" seized almost the entire membership...
The Social Democrats, who for half a century had been treated as enemies of the state, as social pariahs, and as political traitors, encountered a welcome opportunity to demonstrate their political loyalty to the imperiled Fatherland and to gain respectability in the eyes of German society...
[Four years later in 1918,] Germany's defeat and the political ascent of the SDP afforded an unique opportunity to eradicate militarism once and for all, yet not only did the party fail to carry out what its leaders had preached for decades, it crushed an uprising of its own radical wing [demanding the military state be dismantled]...
German militarism was thus allowed to survive and evolve eventually into its most virulent form under Hitler."
Let's Pay Attention To Important Items - Not Trivial
As I said elsewhere,
First, I think it is just plain dumb to care so much about what happens to good for nothings that are guilty with respect horrible crimes. NOW WHEN WILL ATTENTION BE GIVEN WHERE IT BELONGS? To wit, to their unfortunate victims?
Let’s get real, the only thing that really matters was whether their treatment was effective or not which I do not know.
Second, Many try to cover up the terrible wrongs committed by members of this crime against humanity - 9/11/2001 - by this evil and wicked organization - Al Queida under the direction of Muslim religious leader Sheik Osama (Usama) bin Ladin. This cover-up is of course by evil groups and individuals that sympathize with their evil and wicked ways. For details, go to:
Third, Individuals and groups that light the proverbial fuse are responsible for all that follows including what happens to them. For details, go to:
Sponsors of Unprovoked Attacks and Criminal Acts Responsible For All That Occurs:
And,
The Sponsors of Unprovoked Attacks and Criminal Acts Responsible For All That Occurs: the Palestine situation in Gaza.
Fourth, Groups responsible for removing peace from the world should be dissolved. Wars should be eliminated and at present one religion is responsible for over 90% of the violence on earth as pointed out by an Australian newspaper as follows:
"Did you know that 90-95% of the conflicts in the world today are Muslims fighting non-muslims or each other? " [source - The Weekend Australian, November 26-27, 2005 AD]"
I am getting very tired of hearing Palestinians and other Ishmaelite crying crocodile tears and always trying to put the blame for what they do on others such as their conspiracy weavers tried to do about who did 9/11/2001 attack on the World Trade Center, etc. Screaming against what they call wrongful occupations when they are guilty of occupying Byzantine territory, Palestine which belongs to the Israelites [see Numbers the 34 th. Chapter in any Bible for proof of this, and their outright greed as they have over 98% of the Middle East, but still greedly want the less than 2% belonging to their sister tribe Israel] - its time we get real and put an end to this so the world can stop experiencing continuous Ishmaelite induced strife such as shooting rockets at Israel.
Solution, dissolve this false religion and rid the earth of at least 90% of the violence. But of course the politicians will not do what is needed since as Jeremiah 10:23 says, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." (Authorized King James Bible; AV). To read detailed information, go to the following article:
What is fucking wrong with you people?? The man has been in office for 4 months. In those 4 months he has accomplished alot of what he said he would. Do you idiots remember what 8 years under Bush was like???? How many Presidents did anything they said they would in the first 4 months?
We all know the pictures exist. Enough is enough. What if we found pictures in Iraq of US soldiers being tortured and humiliated in the same way. I gaurantee if that happened the death rate of Iraqi's by US troops would immediately increase.
Every single thing is not a big conspiracy. Give the man credit for what he has accomplished in his short time and realize he will not always do what us liberals expect.
But its still better than Bush who did the opposite of what we wanted for 8 straight years.
Grow up people.
