Israel's Dirty Secrets in Gaza: It Was Pure Murder

Israel onfronted a major challenge on Thursday night over the conduct of its 22-day military offensive in Gaza after testimonies by its own soldiers revealed that troops were allowed and, in some cases, even ordered to shoot unarmed Palestinian civilians.

The testimonies – the first of their kind to emerge from inside the military – are at marked variance with official claims that the military made strenuous efforts to avoid civilian casualties and tend to corroborate Palestinian accusations that troops used indiscriminate and disproportionate firepower in civilian areas during the operation. In one of the testimonies shedding harsh new light on what the soldiers say were the permissive rules of engagement for Operation Cast Lead, one soldier describes how an officer ordered the shooting of an elderly woman 100 metres from a house commandeered by troops.

Another soldier, describing how a mother and her children were shot dead by a sniper after they turned the wrong way out of a house, says the "atmosphere" among troops was that the lives of Palestinians were "very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers."

A squad leader said: "At the beginning the directive was to enter a house with an armoured vehicle, to break the door down, to start shooting inside and – I call it murder – to shoot at everyone we identify. In the beginning I asked myself how could this make sense? Higher-ups said it is permissible because everyone left in the city [Gaza City] is culpable because they didn't run away."

The accounts, which also describe apparently indiscriminate destruction of property, were given at a post-operation discussion by graduates of the Yitzhak Rabin pre-military course at the Oranim Academic College in northern Israel. The transcript of the session in front of the head of the course – details from which were published by the newspaper Haaretz – prompted the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) military advocate general Avichai Mendelblit yesterday to announce a military police investigation into the claims. Haaretz said the airing of the "dirty secrets" would make it more difficult for Israelis to dismiss the claims as Palestinian propaganda. The course principal, Danny Zamir, told the newspaper that after being "shocked" by the testimonies on 13 February he told the IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi he "feared a serious moral failure" in the IDF.

In one account, an infantry squad leader describes how troops released a family who had been held in a room of their house for several days. He said: "The platoon commander let the family go and told them to go to the right. One mother and her two children didn't understand and went to the left, but they forgot to tell the sharpshooter on the roof they had let them go and it was okay... The sharpshooter saw a woman and children approaching him. He shot them straight away. I don't think he felt too bad about it, because, as far as he was concerned, he did his job according to the orders he was given. And the atmosphere in general, from what I understood from most of my men who I talked to, the lives of Palestinians, let's say, is something very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers."

A second squad leader, who described the killing of the elderly woman, says he argued with his commander over loose rules of engagement that allowed the clearing out of houses by shooting without warning residents beforehand. After the orders were changed, soldiers had complained that "we should kill everyone there [in the centre of Gaza]. Everyone there is a terrorist." The squad leader said: "To write 'death to the Arabs' on walls, to take family pictures and spit on them, just because you can. I think this is the main thing: To understand how much the IDF has fallen in the realm of ethics."

Ehud Barak, Israel's Defence Minister, said: "I say to you that from the chief of staff down to the last soldier, the most moral army in the world stands ready to take orders from the government of Israel. I have no doubt that every incident will be individually examined."

But Israeli human rights organisations, including B'Tselem and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, called for an independent investigation and complained that the military police inquiry had only been announced after Haaretz published the story, "three weeks after the relevant materials reached the Chief of the General Staff. This tardiness follows a pattern of failures to investigate suspicions of serious crimes".

Amos Harel, the paper's respected military correspondent who broke the story, wrote that Mr Zamir was sentenced in 1990 for refusing to guard a settlers' ceremony at Joseph's tomb in the West Bank. But he added that a reading of the transcript shows that Mr Zamir "acts out of a deep concern for the spirit of the IDF".

In their own words: Soldiers' stories

Squad leader Aviv

"At the beginning the directive was to enter a house with an armoured vehicle, to break the door down, to start shooting inside and to ascend floor by floor and – I call it murder – to go from floor to floor and to shoot at everyone we identify. In the beginning I asked myself how could this make sense? Higher-ups said it is permissible because everyone left in the city [Gaza City] is culpable because they didn't run away. This frightened me a bit. I tried to influence it as much as possible, despite my low rank, to change it. In the end the directive was to go into a house, switch on loudspeakers and tell them 'you have five minutes to run away and whoever doesn't will be killed'."

Soldier Ram

"There was an order to free the [confined] families. The platoon commander set free the family and told them to turn right. A mother and two children didn't understand and turned left. [Officers] had forgotten to tell the sniper on the roof that they were being set free and that everything was okay and he should hold fire. You can say that he acted as he was supposed to, in accordance with the orders. The sniper saw a woman and children approaching him, past lines that no one was to be allowed to cross. He fired directly at them. I don't know if he fired at their legs but in the end he killed them."

America's and Israel's Enemies are Unpeople

It's unfortunate that the Israeli government has already made extravagant promises of impunity to its military personnel; at least the US government has, when forced by publicity, taken action against low-ranking war criminals. Our refusal to investigate or prosecute those higher up the chain of command is shameful, and it deprives us of credibility internationally. In any case, the Israelis know they can count on us for a Security Council veto.

Gazans, like US detainees, are unpeople who have no rights.

Various groups have been speaking of this kind of thing for decades, but haven't managed to convince those who refuse to believe. After all, if it's just peaceniks and Palestinians telling these stories, who'd believe them? They obviously have nefarious reasons for saying such heinous things about 'the most moral army in the world'.

Sadly, I'm not convinced that even these stories coming from the army will change anything, either within Israel or in the US. Those in power have a very strong interest in maintaining the status quo, and the uninformed general public doesn't like relinquishing its pet hatreds.

Will the Jewish conscience win?
Posted by: Dr. Jacqui on Mar 21, 2009 2:23 AM

Our moral and ethical code is derived from the Old Testament that gave us the Ten Commandments to protect the rights of the poor, weak and vulnerable from the rich, powerful and violent. This code, derived from Hammaurabi, permeates all the world's religions, including Islam, and has provided a basis for global declarations of human rights. To see Israel violating international law, committing war crimes in Gaza, perpetrating genocide against Arabs in Palestine is a shocking violation of the very ethics that provided Jews with their unique identity in history. As an American living in Jordan, with a Jewish family in Israel, I am appalled and embarrassed by the amnesia Jews are having regarding their own ethics in their brutal treatment and attitude towards Arabs. It was refreshing to see that now some Israeli soldiers still remember how they are to act as Jews and are revealing the crimes committed in Gaza. I asked my family in NY if they had seen this news story, and they had not; evidently it is too controversial to give it good coverage in NYC where Schummer and others support Israel no matter what it does. Is there is Jewish conscience left?

Historically, tyrants disguised societal ills by blaming them on the Jews. I write this to inform everyone that he diminishes his nation when he indulges in this.
In this way, he never confronts the real forces that ruin his life. Where are the real issues War? Depression? Torture?
While he lists the Jewish sins, he ignores reality. The ills continue unabated.

Modern change in soldier-civilian balance
Posted by: hilaryuk on Mar 21, 2009 7:19 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The IDF is not so different from the modern armies of most militaristic nations. Once wars were often fought between armies and the lives of civilians were accorded some (to varying degrees) respect, at least in theory. But somewhere in the twentieth century the lives of soldiers became more important than those of civilians. In the case of the Western "democracies" this might have had something to do with appeasing electorates who, after all, supplied the manpower for volunteer military forces.

Again, it is human nature to identify a military foe as less human than yourself - how else can a normal person justify the killing of another human being. The dominant ethos of Israel may indeed accentuate this factor as an occupying nation must justify its occupation of land it has no legitimate claim on, but the difference between it and, say, the US and UK military is one of degree, not absolutes.

War corrupts the participants and there is no getting round that uncomfortable fact. Yes, these stories make shocking reading, but so does the fact that our armies routinely call in airpower to protect their soldiers' lives. Little regard is paid to "collateral" (now there's an obscene euphemism) because no-one really questions the underlying assumption that one soldier's life is worth more than any number of those of the people who happen to live there. Even the best of our commentators tend to count "our" losses rather than those of the occupied. Even those who railed against the Iraq war often did so on the same basis.

So when we are looking at the IDF, try to remember that we are looking into a mirror.

Israel suffers from chronic paranoia . . .

because Israelis have chosen to live on a piece of land about the size of New Jersey surrounded by millions of Arabs.

The only way they have been able to survive is by the disproportionate influence they have been able to develop over our Congress and Executive branch.

In addition to the 3 to 4 billion in military and financial aid we give Israel each year, we also give several billion to Egypt and Lebanon
to bribe them not to attack Israel.

We should have invaded Israel instead of Iraq.
Israel could then be made a colony of the US.

If we controlled Israel instead of them controlling us, we could force them to stop the killing and return the land stolen from the Palestinians.

That would create tremendous good will for us in the Arab/Muslim populations. We could then end the fake war on terror.

And we could then destroy Israel's nuclear warheads
to ease more of the tension in neighboring countries including Iran.

I realize that there is one major drawback to this plan. Israel has no oil for us to plunder.

Isael, there would be a chance of peace in the area. Problem is that the Palestinians CHOSE these terrorists to represent them. Guess they don't want peace. They are killing each other and bombed their own buildings just to blame it on Israel. They have no credibility or believability when they act like little girlyboys and the cowards hide behind the Palestinian people, making human shields of them. These cowards are the ones responsible for the death of the Palestinian people, and wouldn't even let them take cover when they were for-warned by Israel, who were trying to avoid hitting the civilians that the Hamas Cowardly little worms were using as human shields. God blessed Israel.

I am ashamed to reveal my ignorance, but how does an ordinary citizen go about getting these stories in the local, national news? I understand the official and unofficial forms of censorship...but how can it be circumvented? Especially when one is impoverished? Crash journalism classes at the local university?
Instead of talking to ourselves, with the exception of the writers addicted to expletives, could the internet find an ingenious, systematic way to get the truth out in ordinary newspapers?

Public opinion is bringing Israel DOWN. The truth is slowly leaking out thanks to the internet. The JDL kept humanitarian, George Galloway, from getting into Canada while letting a war criminal like George Bush in!

The decision to ban George Galloway from Canada seems odd, but now it emerges that the Jewish Defense League (JDL) pressured the Canadian Government (Alikhan Velshi), so the action takes on sinister connotations for Canada, why? Because the Jewish Defense League are according to the FBI a Terrorist Group. In its report, Terrorism 2000/2001, the FBI referred to the JDL as a "violent extremist Jewish organization". This "violent extremist Jewish organization" now it seems has power and influence over the Canadian Government.

Is there anyone they cannot control with their intimidation? Worse than the mafia ever thought about being.

Holocaust Lessons

Over ten years ago I received a fund raiser from the Holocaust Museum in LA. I was tight on cash but I did send them a letter. It stated "you do your Holocaust dead a great disservice when you mistreat those that have no power in your own country." I wonder what you have truly learned from the Holocaust.

I got two letters back in response to my letter. The first stating they have referred my letter to a higher authority. The second letter was from their higher authority and filled with Zionist ranting but the last line was the most informative. "We live by a different set of rules."

When you really do believe that you are "God's Chosen People" and you live it, no one else matters. It sure makes an excellent and easy excuse for a holocaust of your own.

"The Brutality unleashed on mankind in the name of "Manifest Destiny" will eventually end up exterminating this species. That is one set of rules, Israel and the Jews (or the US for that matter) will never learn.

Jay Lindberg

America Complains, But Still Pays for the Bullets

The problem is not that America is critical of Israeli actions, but that America is the one paying for her (Israel's) wars and aggression. While America pours billions into Israel, and supplies her with cluster bombs, white phosphorous, bombs and bullets, Palestinians continue to suffer and die. The logical American response would be to cut off the cash. Quit the military aid and the aid that pays for Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. But, alas, AIPAC and tons of campaign cash to corrupted American politicians, that's the problem.

God!! How I love the Jew-haters coming out in volume over the disclosure that Israeli soldiers were told that their mission was a holy one. Just what have the "Palestinians" been doing with their children from birth on but telling them that killing Jews was a Holy Mission. Every time I see the word "Palestinian," I cringe and shudder. THERE ARE NO SUCH PEOPLE AS PALESTINIANS." They are the Arab tribes that were told by their Arab neighbors to get out of the area given to the Jews in 1948 as a homeland,or they would be killed by the Jews. A complete lie and an example of the uncaring and despicable regard that the Arabs have for their own people. No Arab country wanted these refugees in their country, so they manufactured a country, Palestine, where these ragged remnants of wandering tribes were supposed to form a country.
For over 60 years these countries, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Soudi Arabia, etc., etc., have armed and incited these displaced Arabs to attack Israel. and prevent the actual formation of a homeland for them. The Israelis have tried again and again to come to some agreement on dividing the splinter of land, comprising little more than 1% of the surrounding Arab countries, into a Palestinian homeland, peacefully existing next to Israel. Instead they were treated to constant rocket fire aimed at anything in Israel, mortar fire, armed incursions and kidnapping of Israelis, and a constant harassment and animosity. The "Palestinians" are trained from childhood on to hate, hate, hate anything Israeli. Trained to be happy suicidal bombers, just to kill as many Israelis as they can. How dare anyone criticize Israel for trying to stop this constant, unconsciable, attempt to kill Israelis. Where are the Palestinian peacemakers? Where are the level-minded ones in their population?
The fact that Israeli soldiers disclosed the fact that they were told their invasion of "Palestine" was a religious duty, shows the honesty and honor that the Israelis exhibit. Of course it was wrong to label the attack by Israel as a religious duty. It was in reality an answer to decades of bombings and attacks from the "Palestinians." How long would the USA stand for bombs and mortar shells coming from Canada or Mexico without answering in kind?
So let the Jew-Haters uncork their bile. It will change nothing. Comparing what is happening in Israel and "Palestine" to the Holocaust of the Nazi era is pure idiocy. May they drown in their own drool.

If Phosphorus Bombs were used for lighting, then why weren't the Israeli soldiers underneath them?

I must give credit to the Israelis. They are very good at finding justification for whatever massacres they want to do.

‘The accounts, which also describe apparently indiscriminate destruction of property.’

Indiscriminate destruction of property” what the hell else can it be when in the first 24 hours one hundred tonnes of bombs were dropped upon one of the most densely populated area in the world?

The destruction of housing with tanks and bulldozers? The destruction of farms and factories for no reason other than to deprive the Palestinians of what little they have?

Murder? One of the best equipped armies in the world turned loose against a caged, defenceless population with no armaments capable of any sort of defence and no area of sanctuary to flee too.

Today this is all the Israeli army is good for. Brutal jailers torturing and murdering their helpless victims.

Israel/Fallen Angels Duality

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Christ said that Christians including gentiles are God's Chosen People. That is why Israel is so angry with the world. It is true that one time God did choose all of Israel (not just the Jews) from out of the rest of the world but they lost that quite sometime ago. It would of eventually happened to any nation that He chose, its in our nature to fail. It is in duality with the anger and the hate that Satan and his fallen angels have for us humans because we will eventually replace them. All Jews and Israelis have a chance to recoup what they have lost by just recognizing Christ as the son of God. There are many many Christian Jews and Arabs.

"Chosen People" syndrome has certainly afflicted humanity over the ages. With the slightest encouragement we bask in the feeling of superiority over others. Scapegoats have been popular since the dawn of history.

While some of the anger and depair in Amerika has been recently catalyzed towards AIG executives and the departed administration, scratch the surface of many otherwise well-adjusted citizens and quite often you unleash a vitriolic diatribe against immigrants and how they are overpopulating the US, taking up valuable resources and undermining the future of the country and American Way of Life.

When the surviving germans climbed out of the rubble after WWII, they vowed never to repeat the atrocities of the Holocaust. Copies of "Mein Kampf" were banned. Violent films were heavily censored. Refugees and immigrants were encouraged while german youth were taught that Germany alone and the cowardice of the german people were responsible for the deaths of so many.

Thirty years later Germany was a prosperous nation thanks in part to socialist ideals such as universal healthcare, regulatory protection and an advanced apprenticeship program. In fact the apprenticeship program was SO successful that there were no germans left to perform the menial work and thousands of migrant workers were brought in, mostly from Turkey.

Before reunification, Germany had 65 million people in a country the size of Washington state. Even at this population density, they were still able to grow 60% of their own food and german engineering and technology were still a gold standard around the world.

After reunification the economy changed, dragged down by the need to modernize a completely depleted East Germany. Unemployment began to rise and the new skinhead movement emerged, with anger directed towards the migrant workers for taking up german jobs and german living space. It only took the country 50 years to go full circle again.

It is good to acknowledge that what is happening in Gaza is WRONG - the Israelis will only perpetuate this war to the nth generation with their inhumane tactics. It is also WRONG for the US and Israel to pointedly ignore any and all UN resolutions aimed at restoring peace or addressing corporate wrongdoing. But this is just an intellectual exercise in morality unless we become willing to take a good hard look at ourselves FIRST and realize that we are riding pretty high on the "Chosen People" syndrome ourselves :.?

Just like the SS. their program was moral according to the rules set up by the Nazi party.
Killing by the iSSraeli army is just the same.
After the all the policies of clearing land for Jews is exactly as the Liebensraum policies of Hitler.

Same program same methods.

Is it not interesting that we become exact replicas of those whom we profess to hate most vehemently.
And why is that?
Precisely because we most hate those who demonstrate what criminality and bestiality we have in our own hearts.

Interesting too that both the Swastika and the Star of David were originally symbols of a deeper spirituality and understanding of the human condition.
Both symbols have been perverted in the pursuit of poisonous nonsense and power.

And never look back.

Search the term:"Israeli brain drain" and you will find that Israel's "best and brightest" have no intention of staying there one minute longer than they have to. They can do the math.

Three hundred million arab peoples surround Israel and consider it a child-killing abomination. The average age of their arab neighbors is about 20. The average age in Israel is over 35.

America is floundering and with Rahm Emmanual in the White House with Obama there will be no improvement. Wall Street has written checks that the environment cannot cash. The american people do not have the jobs or organization to pay their debts.

When america falters Israel will fall.

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

I am ashamed to reveal my ignorance, but how does an ordinary citizen go about getting these stories in the local, national news?

If Israel continues to act like Nazis in the middle east, the state will perish in a radioactive waste cloud.

The world would be a much better place without the idiot religions. Throughout history, war, death and destruction were almost always caused by religious nuts or the occult. Let's abolish all religions. Humanity should be practiced by all people.

Israel/Fallen Angels Duality

The following URL points to Israeli Army T-Shirts showing the attitude of many towards killing Palestinian civilians. Amongst others is one labeled "One shot -- Two Kills" with a pregnant Arab woman in the crosshairs.

Why not support the Peace movement inside Israel, which Israel doesn't want the world to know about? They are treated like traitors because they have a conscience that doesn't allow them to accept their government's murderous policies. Does that sound familiar?

The most moral army in the world.

Smart Israeli's LEAVE Israel
