Seymour Hersh: "Executive Assassination Ring" Answered to Cheney, Had No Congressional Oversight

By Eric Black, MinnPost.com. Posted March 12, 2009.

Investigative journalist Sy Hersh dropped a bombshell revelation on Monday about international killings ordered under Bush.

(“Finding” refers to a special document that a president must issue, although not make public, to authorize covert CIA actions.)

Here is a tape of the full Mondale-Hersh-Jacobs colloquy, a little over an hour, without the audience Q and A. If you want to look for the Hersh statement quoted above, it’s about at the 7:30 mark.

The rest of the evening was, as expected, full of worry and wisdom and quite a bit of Bush-bashing.

Jacobs walked the two elder statesmen through their experiences of:

  • The My Lai massacre, which Hersh first revealed publicly and which he last night called “the end of innocence about us and war.”
  • The Pentagon Papers case, which Mondale called the best example of the “government’s potential for vast public deception.”
  • Henry Kissinger’s secret dealings, mostly relating to the Vietnam War. (Hersh, who has written volumes about Kissinger, said that he will always believe that whereas ordinary people count sheep to fall asleep, Kissinger “has to count burned and maimed Cambodian babies.”)
  • The Church Committee investigation of CIA and FBI abuses, in which Mondale played a major role. (He talked about the fact that FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, not only spied on Martin Luther King but literally tried to drive him to suicide.)
  • The Iran Contra scandal. (Hersh said the Reagan administration came to office with a clear goal of finding a way to finance covert actions, such as the funding of the Nicaraguan Contras, without appropriations so that Congress wouldn't know about them. Mondale noted that Reagan had signed a law barring further aid to the Contras, then participated in a scheme to keep the aid flowing. Hersh said that two key veterans of Iran-Contra, Dick Cheney and national security official Elliot Abrams, were reunited in the George W. Bush White House and decided that the key lesson from Iran-Contra was that too many people in the administration knew about it.)
  • And the Bush-Cheney years. (Said Hersh: “The contempt for Congress in the Bush-Cheney White House was extaordinary.” Said Mondale of his successor, Cheney and his inner circle: “they ran a government within the government.” Hersh added: “Eight or nine neoconservatives took over our country.” Mondale said that the precedents of abuse of vice presidential power by Cheney would remain "like a loaded pistol that you leave on the dining room table.")

Jacobs pressed both men on the question of whether the frequent abuses of power show that the Constitution fails, because these things keep happening, or whether it works, because these things keep coming to light.

Mondale stuck with the happy answer. “The system has come through again and again,” he said. Presidents always think they will get away with it, but eventually reporters like Hersh bring things to light, the public “starts smelling this stuff,” the courts and the Congress get involved. Presidents “always, in the long run, find out that the system is stronger than they are.”

Hersh seemed more troubled by the repetitions of the pattern. The “beautiful thing about our system” is that eventually we get new leaders, he said. “The evil twosome, Cheney and Bush, left,” Hersh said. But he also said “it’s really amazing to me that we manage to get such bad leadership, so consistently.”

And he added that both the press and the public let down their guard in the aftermath of 9/11.

“The major newspapers joined the [Bush] team,” Hersh said. Top editors passed the message to investigative reporters not to “pick holes” in what Bush was doing. Violations of the Bill of Rights happened in the plain sight of the public. It it was not only tolerated, but Bush was re-elected.

And even Mondale admitted that one of his greatest successes, laws reforming the FBI and CIA in the aftermath of the Church Committee, were supposed to fix the problem so that “we would never have these problems again in the lifetime of anyone alive at the time, but of course we did.”

The more we hear, the more history repeats itself, and not in a good sense.

Moving On

Despite our new President's concern for "moving forward", I have to say that we cannot move forward until we clean up the mess we leave behind. It has been truly said that, "Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it." It would be a serious mistake to ignore the crimes and treasons of the Bush administration and let them go simply as regrettable mistakes that were made in the past and then march forward, hoping that we can leave those mistakes behind and pretend they will not happen again.

That is a very dangerous line of thought, since we cannot ever be sure that there will never again be evil men who will try to establish a dictatorship in the USA, as Bush did, almost successfully. In fact, Bush WAS successful, if only temporarily. We are very lucky that he didn't simply cancel the election, suspend the Constitution and declare himself "President for life". I suspect that this would have interfered with the plans of his masters, who vetoed any such plans and had enough on W. to make him toe the line. Obama is a partial, temporary reprieve, but it would be incredibly naive to think that the plutocracy has simply accepted defeat and gone back under the rocks they crawled out from under.

No, this is merely a temporary defeat for those who have shown themselves capable of planning that spans generations. We must remain vigilant. We must insist that Obama fulfill his promises to the nation and do the right thing in every case. Opinions may differ as to what that "right thing" may be in any given case, but we must work that out among ourselves, consulting the benchmark of what is in the public interest.

But if we are to succeed, we must first gain a full understanding of what went wrong with Bush and Cheney. This will require a thorough investigation of the malfeasance of those in power and eventual trials for those whose guilt is apparent. Few of these traitors will have been kind enough to have confessed their crimes in public as Bush has done on several occasions. The public must not be left to guess in what ways we were royally screwed, we have to KNOW so that we are able to recognize the symptoms of misgovernment and be prepared to stomp on it when it next appears in public office.

We need a determined housecleaning before our national house will be fit for living, much less for inviting guests to visit. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance."

With love under will,

Bob, aka Adastra,

I for one would like to hear Hersh's analysis of the events that occurred on 9/11 that gave the Bush administration unprecedented power to wreak death and destruction in the middle east but no one is asking the questions.

Until there is an independent investigation that answers the myriad unanswered questions and allows testimony from eye-witnesses as well as engineers and architects that actually built the towers the ranks of Americans that don't trust their government whatsoever will grow and their anger fester.

Just as Obama wants to turn a blind eye to possible Bush administration war crimes in an attempt to "move forward" ensures that those types of crimes can be repeated by the executive office, so the lack of an authentic accounting of the events of 9/11, which spawned the lion's share of conflict and despair affecting the world today, will allow other murderous false flag events to occur.

Of The People, By The People, FOR The People
Posted by: Brb007 on Mar 12, 2009 10:30 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
That line is the answer and many of us are missing it. Our country was intended to be governed by all of US. We have evolved (or deteriorated, as it were) into a government run by professional politicians and wealthy special interest groups. Until we, the people, stand up together and take the country back, insisting that we participate and actively run this country, we will have no democracy, no accountability and no lawful actions on our behalf. The "will" of the people will continue to mean nothing.

We have become complacent, willing to sit back for decades, while we watched our election process go from nominating and electing the finest and brightest of our countrymen, to allowing those with money and power to appoint, select and buy "their men" into offices in order to control and sway our policy. The Bush Administration was the epitomy and most extreme example of this complacency and unethical control being permitted to perpetuate into each and every voting community across this nation.

We are no longer a democracy, a republic ... we have been hijacked into a theocracy, by a handful of egomaniacal rich men, who have sophomoric dreams of power trips and wanting to rule the world. It has become almost like a poor script from a Batman movie, where Gotham is threatened by the Joker, only we have no "hero" to save us from demise.

Only when we, the people ... a nation 320 million people strong, stand up and give voice as one, will we have the opportunity to purge our country of the slime that has oozed into every functional crack within our government and taken control for their own benefit. We have been had and the sad thing is that many STILL do not see it or refuse to admit it. Massive campaigns and billions of dollars have been spent to fool you and I and to keep us blinded to the truths and facts about our country, our government and our very existence.

If and when we choose to see it and act on it, only then will we be able to reverse the damage, return our democracy to a constitutional entity, with freedom and justice for ALL and restore our republic to a just, fair and revered leader of nations. If we continue to permit this massive PR campaign of deceit, lies and criminal conduct by professional politicians and lobbyists, we will soon find ourselves falling in the same way that the great Roman Empire fell ... to extinction! We are rapidly approaching our demise now. It truly IS up to US, but will we have the stomach for it? I hope so. We are running out of time.

GOSEARCH

Here is an email I posted to Walter Mondale that I think is relevant to the above discussion:

Dear Mr. Mondale:
I'm listening to the audio of “Great Conversations” event at the University of Minnesota where you and Seymour Hersh talk about the usurpation of power by Bush-Cheney administration and your work in the past. You say you stand for a reasonably open government, and yet why can't the big secret about the UFO's and how much technology we have developed, and how much of our budget is going into a black hole, be disclosed. I'm sure you're familiar with the names below:

Col. Phillip Corso
Dr. Michael Wolf
Robert Dean
Charles Hall
Paul Hill

Why have all these individuals, all retired military with high level clearances come forward to tell their story about the covert nature of UFO contact and technology?
Where are the champions in Congress these days? Have you ever listened to the interviews of these individuals or read their books? All secrets pale in comparison to this secret. With this issue the entire political system hangs in the moral and ethical balance. It would be more than I could hope for to get a personal response so I would like you to write about this if possible. I am sure you are familiar with the work of Dr. Steven Greer, spearheading "The Disclosure Project" where twenty military ranking officers with high level clearances came forward like those in the list above and another 300-400 individuals more are willing to come forward if the circumstances are right.
American citizens like me are longing and hoping for voices to be raised in the halls of Congress by politicians, writers, scientists, thinkers, and the like, to demand that this issue be addressed.
Sincere Regards,
(my name is left off here)

considering how much money we have paid to Pakistan's Pres and the cozy relationship he had with the Bushies- should we not consider the idea the woman who challenged him in the election was on that list for assasination?
Pakistan has done nothing to control it's terrorist element. Allowing free movement back and forth between it and afghanistan- in fact allowing Binny to escape when there was a chance to actually catch him. since we all know how lucrative these two wars have been for the Corps and Pakistan- Why would the Bushies or The former Military Leader want to bring it to an end? Would Bhuoto have actually tried to control the radical element? closed access from Afghanistan? sought to Capture The Repugs ol''80's 'Freedom Fighter' Buddy Bin Laden?Ended the conflict between India and Pakistan?
Hersh had better have some serious Protection, and have multiple copies of his evidence scattered throughout the world. Otherwise Cheneycorp may just plant some Biological on him and then stage his suicide.
Cheney should be already Hung for his decades of High crimes. hang him, defib, hang him again,Repeat for every crime he has committed for the last 40 yrs. Start with Nixons era, into Ronny's Iran Contra, Bin Ladens secret Funds and Saddams gift of Anthrax, then to HW's Blood for Oil War right through every act of Treason War crime, and crime against humanity he's orchestraed for the last 8 yrs!Same goes for his co conspriators Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, and all their lil' minions, including W.

If the Obama administration wants to forget the past, mass murder of 911 and war crimes, then we must tell all the judges in Amerika to cancel all murder, rape, armed robbery, A % B domestic cases because if they go forward with these cases then there will be no justice and liberty for all. Might as well change the entire system!

White House Cosa Nostra

And here I thought Murder, Inc. was a Mafia organization! Curiously, when CNN nabbed Cheney for an "exclusive" interview with John King segment, the newsman asked not a question about Hersch's report. One can only assume Cheney made his appearance on the program conditional: no questions about the White House Mafia.

What will be find out next? Obama and his A.G. will now be hard put to hold off on criminal investigations of the whole bunch in the name of bipartisanship. Boards of inquiry will not do. The actions of the Bush Bunch cannot go unpunished! To hell with the consequences: let the investigation unveil what it may!

Joint Special Operations Command

I certainly have no idea what they are doing, but the Joint Special Operations Command is not as unknown as Mr. Hersh seems to imply. It has been around for nearly thirty years. I have seen their building at Fort Bragg. In fact, the Joint Special Operations Command is even listed in Wikipedia. It is the joint service command which oversees the Green Berets, Navy Seals, and other special operations units.

I wonder what the basis is for saying they do not report to anyone and have no congressional oversight. As a joint service command they may not report to a particular service chief. But that does not mean they do not report to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to the Secretary of Defense. Congressional oversight is provided because they get money in the annual budget. Of course, that does not mean that the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of Defense, and Congress knows what Joint Special Operations Command is up to.

Many governmental bodies were undermined by the Bush administration. I would be amazed if the Joint Special Operations Command was not used for purposes for which it was never intended.

Ya know, I keep finding and reading these, bull friggin crap stories on some sites, well lots of sites, being a victim of the bush era, I don't have to go to no pesky job no more, so I cyberexist,(?) yes my entire life is the web, sad, I know, but, I learn all kindsa crazy stuff here.
There used to be a time, when I couldn't care any less about government, and even less about what they did. Long as I had my budz, isss cooolll, ya know?
So, I puff "n" read a lot, too much at times.
Being under the guidance of higher authority, I tend to go deep into whatever interests me at that particular time.
Lately, I've wandered far from the "norm", into the area known as "government", US government, the terrorist regime US government.
The, whatever is, or could be worse, than a terrorist government, government.
It's happened, the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of the "great American experiment" have fused into the HYRDA, the uber terror. Just look at the crazed way they throw money around, while any and all laws are now created at whim, and all 3 branches support each other, with unlimited funding, no one that can stop the momentum of this pompous, arrogant, train wreck would want to out of fear of losing all that free money. How does a government lose a C130 cargo plane full of pallets of $100 bills, hundreds of pallets of $100 bills, okay, so they didn't lose the plane, they still got that, but them pallets musta fell out somewheres, WTF
Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK we/you elected (I wont waste my time playing the "ooo lets vote for the good guy" bull shit game. So ya cant blame me. These clowns that play "dress up, all important decision makin',look at me, I'm an ass hole" puppet people, have to be the stupidest morons human genetics ever puked up.
Back to where I originally started with my rant here, I've been reading a lot of stuff about, and hearing a lot of stuff about, and seen lots of streaming stuff, about our government, OUR US government, the one we learned all about in school, had that "big" civics test in high school, every body feared cause it "was hard". NO it was bull shit. I don't see the American flag the same way I used to. Long ago, I used to bitch about all the government we had, HA, that was nothing, when I wipe my ass I feel like I have to check to make sure I didn't snag up some government guy in the process. I mean, every friggin aspect of my life has the governments hand in my pocket.
