Seymour Hersh: "Executive Assassination Ring" Answered to Cheney, Had No Congressional Oversight
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Civil Liberties headlines via email.
At a “Great Conversations” event at the University of Minnesota [Monday] legendary investigative reporter Seymour Hersh may have made a little more news than he intended by talking about new alleged instances of domestic spying by the CIA, and about an ongoing covert military operation that he called an “executive assassination ring.”
Hersh spoke with great confidence about these findings from his current reporting, which he hasn’t written about yet.
In an email exchange afterward, Hersh said that his statements were “an honest response to a question” from the event’s moderator, U of M Political Scientist Larry Jacobs and “not something I wanted to dwell about in public.”
Hersh didn’t take back the statements, which he said arise from reporting he is doing for a book, but that it might be a year or two before he has what he needs on the topic to be “effective ... that is, empirical, for even the most skeptical.”
The evening of great conversation, featuring Walter Mondale and Hersh, moderated by Jacobs and titled “America’s Constitutional Crisis,” looked to be a mostly historical review of events that have tested our Constitution, by a journalist and a high government officials who had experience with many of the crises.
And it was mostly historical, and a great conversation, in which Hersh and Mondale talked about the patterns by which presidents seem to get intoxicated by executive power, frustrated by the limitations on that power from Congress and the public, drawn into improper covert actions that exceed their constitutional powers, in the belief that they can get results and will never be found out. Despite a few references to the Founding Fathers, the history was mostly recent, starting with the Vietnam War with much of it arising from the George W. Bush administration, which both men roundly denounced.
At the end of one answer by Hersh about how these things tend to happen, Jacobs asked: “And do they continue to happen to this day?”
Replied Hersh:
“Yuh. After 9/11, I haven’t written about this yet, but the Central Intelligence Agency was very deeply involved in domestic activities against people they thought to be enemies of the state. Without any legal authority for it. They haven’t been called on it yet. That does happen.
"Right now, today, there was a story in the New York Times that if you read it carefully mentioned something known as the Joint Special Operations Command -- JSOC it’s called. It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently. They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. They did not report to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff or to Mr. [Robert] Gates, the secretary of defense. They reported directly to him. ...
"Congress has no oversight of it. It’s an executive assassination ring essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on. Just today in the Times there was a story that its leaders, a three star admiral named [William H.] McRaven, ordered a stop to it because there were so many collateral deaths.
"Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving. That’s been going on, in the name of all of us.
"It’s complicated because the guys doing it are not murderers, and yet they are committing what we would normally call murder. It’s a very complicated issue. Because they are young men that went into the Special Forces. The Delta Forces you’ve heard about. Navy Seal teams. Highly specialized.
"In many cases, they were the best and the brightest. Really, no exaggerations. Really fine guys that went in to do the kind of necessary jobs that they think you need to do to protect America. And then they find themselves torturing people.
"I’ve had people say to me -- five years ago, I had one say: ‘What do you call it when you interrogate somebody and you leave them bleeding and they don’t get any medical committee and two days later he dies. Is that murder? What happens if I get before a committee.?’
"But they’re not gonna get before a committee.”
Hersh, the best-known investigative reporter of his generation, writes about these kinds of issues for The New Yorker. He has written often about JSOC, including, last July that:
“Under the Bush Administration’s interpretation of the law, clandestine military activities, unlike covert C.I.A. operations, do not need to be depicted in a Finding, because the President has a constitutional right to command combat forces in the field without congressional interference.”

That is a very dangerous line of thought, since we cannot ever be sure that there will never again be evil men who will try to establish a dictatorship in the USA, as Bush did, almost successfully. In fact, Bush WAS successful, if only temporarily. We are very lucky that he didn't simply cancel the election, suspend the Constitution and declare himself "President for life". I suspect that this would have interfered with the plans of his masters, who vetoed any such plans and had enough on W. to make him toe the line. Obama is a partial, temporary reprieve, but it would be incredibly naive to think that the plutocracy has simply accepted defeat and gone back under the rocks they crawled out from under.
No, this is merely a temporary defeat for those who have shown themselves capable of planning that spans generations. We must remain vigilant. We must insist that Obama fulfill his promises to the nation and do the right thing in every case. Opinions may differ as to what that "right thing" may be in any given case, but we must work that out among ourselves, consulting the benchmark of what is in the public interest.
But if we are to succeed, we must first gain a full understanding of what went wrong with Bush and Cheney. This will require a thorough investigation of the malfeasance of those in power and eventual trials for those whose guilt is apparent. Few of these traitors will have been kind enough to have confessed their crimes in public as Bush has done on several occasions. The public must not be left to guess in what ways we were royally screwed, we have to KNOW so that we are able to recognize the symptoms of misgovernment and be prepared to stomp on it when it next appears in public office.
We need a determined housecleaning before our national house will be fit for living, much less for inviting guests to visit. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance."

Until there is an independent investigation that answers the myriad unanswered questions and allows testimony from eye-witnesses as well as engineers and architects that actually built the towers the ranks of Americans that don't trust their government whatsoever will grow and their anger fester.
Just as Obama wants to turn a blind eye to possible Bush administration war crimes in an attempt to "move forward" ensures that those types of crimes can be repeated by the executive office, so the lack of an authentic accounting of the events of 9/11, which spawned the lion's share of conflict and despair affecting the world today, will allow other murderous false flag events to occur.

We have become complacent, willing to sit back for decades, while we watched our election process go from nominating and electing the finest and brightest of our countrymen, to allowing those with money and power to appoint, select and buy "their men" into offices in order to control and sway our policy. The Bush Administration was the epitomy and most extreme example of this complacency and unethical control being permitted to perpetuate into each and every voting community across this nation.
We are no longer a democracy, a republic ... we have been hijacked into a theocracy, by a handful of egomaniacal rich men, who have sophomoric dreams of power trips and wanting to rule the world. It has become almost like a poor script from a Batman movie, where Gotham is threatened by the Joker, only we have no "hero" to save us from demise.
Only when we, the people ... a nation 320 million people strong, stand up and give voice as one, will we have the opportunity to purge our country of the slime that has oozed into every functional crack within our government and taken control for their own benefit. We have been had and the sad thing is that many STILL do not see it or refuse to admit it. Massive campaigns and billions of dollars have been spent to fool you and I and to keep us blinded to the truths and facts about our country, our government and our very existence.
If and when we choose to see it and act on it, only then will we be able to reverse the damage, return our democracy to a constitutional entity, with freedom and justice for ALL and restore our republic to a just, fair and revered leader of nations. If we continue to permit this massive PR campaign of deceit, lies and criminal conduct by professional politicians and lobbyists, we will soon find ourselves falling in the same way that the great Roman Empire fell ... to extinction! We are rapidly approaching our demise now. It truly IS up to US, but will we have the stomach for it? I hope so. We are running out of time.

What will be find out next? Obama and his A.G. will now be hard put to hold off on criminal investigations of the whole bunch in the name of bipartisanship. Boards of inquiry will not do. The actions of the Bush Bunch cannot go unpunished! To hell with the consequences: let the investigation unveil what it may!

I wonder what the basis is for saying they do not report to anyone and have no congressional oversight. As a joint service command they may not report to a particular service chief. But that does not mean they do not report to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to the Secretary of Defense. Congressional oversight is provided because they get money in the annual budget. Of course, that does not mean that the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of Defense, and Congress knows what Joint Special Operations Command is up to.
Many governmental bodies were undermined by the Bush administration. I would be amazed if the Joint Special Operations Command was not used for purposes for which it was never intended.

There used to be a time, when I couldn't care any less about government, and even less about what they did. Long as I had my budz, isss cooolll, ya know?
So, I puff "n" read a lot, too much at times.
Being under the guidance of higher authority, I tend to go deep into whatever interests me at that particular time.
Lately, I've wandered far from the "norm", into the area known as "government", US government, the terrorist regime US government.
The, whatever is, or could be worse, than a terrorist government, government.
It's happened, the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of the "great American experiment" have fused into the HYRDA, the uber terror. Just look at the crazed way they throw money around, while any and all laws are now created at whim, and all 3 branches support each other, with unlimited funding, no one that can stop the momentum of this pompous, arrogant, train wreck would want to out of fear of losing all that free money. How does a government lose a C130 cargo plane full of pallets of $100 bills, hundreds of pallets of $100 bills, okay, so they didn't lose the plane, they still got that, but them pallets musta fell out somewheres, WTF
Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK we/you elected (I wont waste my time playing the "ooo lets vote for the good guy" bull shit game. So ya cant blame me. These clowns that play "dress up, all important decision makin',look at me, I'm an ass hole" puppet people, have to be the stupidest morons human genetics ever puked up.
Back to where I originally started with my rant here, I've been reading a lot of stuff about, and hearing a lot of stuff about, and seen lots of streaming stuff, about our government, OUR US government, the one we learned all about in school, had that "big" civics test in high school, every body feared cause it "was hard". NO it was bull shit. I don't see the American flag the same way I used to. Long ago, I used to bitch about all the government we had, HA, that was nothing, when I wipe my ass I feel like I have to check to make sure I didn't snag up some government guy in the process. I mean, every friggin aspect of my life has the governments hand in my pocket.

We are not just whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us… No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we’ll kill you." – Hunter S. Thompson
