Torture Chic: Why Is the Media Glorifying Inhumane, Sadistic Behavior?

During the Bush years there was an increase in torture imagery in popular culture -- a growing acceptance of violence as routine and effective.

In his first days in office, President Barack Obama took a pen and signed executive orders halting the use of torture, shutting Guantanamo and  banning secret CIA prisons overseas, as he vowed to fight terrorism "in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals."

Shortly thereafter, a poll showed that Americans did not overwhelmingly support the president's rejection of the Bush administration's use of torture as an instrument of the state.

In their zeal to legalize torture and trounce the Bill of Rights, the Bush team crafted a media campaign to sell the "War on Terror" as a righteous quest retribution for 9/11, inciting fear of future carnage to justify violating the Geneva protocols and the U.S. Army Field Manual. While the Bush torture policy made stunning progress through the courts and the legislature, with the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act of 2006, there followed an increase in the normalization of torture images in popular culture, a growing acceptance of violence as effective, routine.

When photographs of torture and abuse at Abu Ghraib appeared in 2004, Bush's approval ratings sank, yet torture themes multiplied in film and TV. From 2002 through 2005, the Parents Television Council counted 624 torture scenes in prime time, a six-fold increase. UCLA's Television Violence Monitoring Project reports "torture on TV shows is significantly higher than it was five years ago and the characters who torture have changed. It used to be that only villains on television tortured. Today, "good guy" and heroic American characters torture -- and this torture is depicted as necessary, effective and even patriotic".

Human Rights First has just released a short film entitled "Primetime Torture" that examines how torture and interrogation scenes are portrayed in television programming. A retired military leader interviewed for the film says, "The portrayal of torture in popular culture is having a significant impact on how interrogations are conducted in the field. U.S. soldiers are imitating the techniques they have seen on television -- because they think such tactics work."

Lately it seems that three out of five offerings at the local Cineplex are tales of clever and nimble torturers and serial killers. This mass marketing of the murderer, sadist and child molester endows the deviant with a fictitious intelligence, the pretense of a rich and complex "inner life",  a particularly annoying Hollywood buzzword. Such characters aren't presented as perverts, rather, they're complex geniuses, creative and tormented, ever misunderstood. It must come from the suits, who study box office returns for the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise. Whereas actresses frequently complain that the only roles available are for killers or tarts, actors bemoan the dearth of "serious" movies amid piles of scripts about guys shooting off guns. They'll play the killer if they have to, it's work.

Showtime has launched a hit series called "Dexter, "America's Favorite Serial Killer; He's Got A Way with Murder" The star, Michael C. Hall, has become a pin-up icon in men's magazines, where he speaks rapturously in interviews about the joys of portraying "a serial killer with a conscience", in that he only kills bad people, or anyone he finds irritating.  There's a Dexter screensaver, board game and Facebook site, where you can "Dexterize" your friend's profile. Huh?

Why is the media glorifying inhumane, sadistic behavior?

Easy. To desensitize us. If we can find torture entertaining, then chances are we don't have the intellectual wherewithall to fully fathom the boundless, depraved sadism required of any entity that is willing and able to perform such acts, nor would it ever occur to us to question it on moral/ethical grounds or, God forbid, denounce it.

Not even if it is done to our fellow citizens.

We're being conditioned to accept that if someone is being tortured, then they must have done something to deserve it.

And if being a viewer of torturetainment on TV isn't bad enough, you've really got to wonder what goes on in the minds of the human laboratory rats who sign up to be test subjects. In these economic times, it's scary what desperate people might consent to for 50 grand. Holy Must See TV, Batman!:

Fox Reality has announced the premiere of Solitary 2.0, the reality competition series' second season that takes nine participants through a series of psychological tests that grow more challenging as each episode passes for the chance to claim the $50,000 grand prize.[N]ine contestants placed in individual "laboratory pods" -- Fox Reality's version of solitary confinement -- and denied interaction with any other people. The only voice they hear during filming is "Val," an "omniscient friend and sarcastic taskmaster" who controls every aspect of what's taking place in each participant's pod, including sleep, sound, temperature and light.
Once in their pods, the contestants -- who will also be stripped of their names and will only referred to by an assigned number -- will begin competing for the measly $50,000 grand prize that will be awarded to the person who tolerates Val's abuse the longest (all of the contestants are free to quit the competition at any time).
"Solitary entered into uncharted territory in the reality world," said Fox Reality president David Lyle. "Solitary 2.0 will push the limits of human tolerance even further and allow our viewers to go along for the ride while, luckily for them, watching comfortably from their homes."

The popular legitimation of torture is part of a broader deviation toward imperialist police state.

I am a college professor and I see a growing number of young people who want to go into the FBI, intelligence agencies, and, of course, forensic science. Nice American kids who have been turned into eager Gestapo recruits by tv.

The real torture is all the profound news and info, that you'll never see or hear about.

Pull the plug on all MSM/PBS/NPR and flourish or stay stuck in the myths, manipulations and Lies.

GE has NO business owning NBC. The NYTimes/WP/CT laugh in your face because you still think they have integrity.

The premise of 24 is based on the fact that something really really bad is just about to happen. Last year, I think (I don't watch the show), a nuclear bomb exploded in LA with promises of more to come in the next 24 hours - what do you do in those circumstances?

It's an interesting concept and is ripe for TV to create a show around such a scenario. This is standard for Hollywood. Were any of you complaining when the movie "The day after tomorrow" portrayed Global Warming destroying half of the continental United States in a span of a day?

I have been talking to friends and family for years trying to get them to see that the rise in the incidents of torture and cruelty on TV has been planned to desensitize them. That "24", especially, produced by fascist Joel Surnow, is absolutely crafted to get Americans to accept this state of affairs as normal. You will love your torturers - they guard your precious daughters from swarthy types who want to 'kill us for our freedoms.'

And now we have the new purely propaganda show "Homeland Security USA." When, oh when, will Americans wake up from their stupor and see these programs for what they are?

When I try to educate my friends, they look at me like I'm mad. They simply cannot or will not believe that theses shows, with their images and themes, are done on purpose.

Even kid's films - like "Space Chimps" show government agents seizing a chimp from his circus owner with the one agent basically saying 'we can do whatever we want.'

I remember the end scene in "Ironman" where the one character is clearly juxtaposed against a giant (and I might add 1950s style) poster saying "America's Defense Industry - The Arsenal of Freedom."

Not accidental.

When you really look at the whole scope of the American media with clear eyes, it really is scary as hell.

I suppose part of this might be my PSYOP training but surely other rational, intelligent people at some time, can see this too. So thanks to the author of this piece for bringing this out. Hopefully people will start looking at the images displayed to them with more critical eyes.

While I agree with the article, and found many things admirable in Senator Moynihan, I think it fair to point out that, as I recall, he included greater acceptance of homosexuality and homosexual sex as an example of "defining deviancy down"; not a particularly exemplary example of moral clarity in my view.

Yet another reason why NOT to get a new digital TV, cable, or a converter box when the shift happens.
They are trying to brainwash us.

By the way, related to this, the Obama administration will NOT stop the practice of "extraordinary renditions", and will likely even EXPAND the practice.
And did you know that the ban on secret CIA prisons only applies to long-term facilities? Facilities built for holding detainees for a relatively short amount of time will NOT be closed.
Even our current president seems to have been taken in by the pro-sadism propaganda.

Obama is sending his two daughters to Sidwell Friend's School, which is a Quaker (as in believes in values like non-violence and is anti-war) school. I only hope that he embraces the same values as he is exposing his daughters to. I would like to believe that he does.

Obama indicated that he would bring home the troops (didn't promise, but did indicate) and that was a strong reason he was elected. He needs to bring them home within this year.
Obama needs to halt the use of rendition.
Obama needs to stop being so concerned with bipartisanship - it isn't getting him or the American people anywhere.
Obama should promote a stimulus package that goes directly to the American people - not the greedy group who gobbled up TARP to date.
Obama has thrown over the progressives and is making this more clear every day.
Obama wants to be re-elected in 2012. Isn't there a good independent candidate that is electable in this country?

All those autopsies, all those body parts in full color graphic display, reduce humans to inanimate parts. Such displays became increasingly popular after 9/11 and after the beginning of the Bush wars.

It's all of one piece. Football glorifies violence in its similarity to war. And half the nation doesn't even notice the likeness; they glory in it. Speakers like Rush Limbaugh demean, use sarcasm and ugly parodies. That is violence, but no one notices the effect on the listeners, which is far worse than the content. Survivor and reality shows on TV are mean spirited, unpleasant to watch, and highly competitive--certainly without any redeeming social characteristic. It has become funny to see someone banished because he didn't match up in loathsome acts.

We need to clean up our words and our behavior at play, at home, and at work. To continue down the path we are now on is to drag everyone down to lower and lower depths.

During the Bush mid years "24", "300" came out.....many since then too. Now we have "Ironman", "Defiance", "Taken"(which I just saw last night). "we've got "Grand Torino" Getting even, "Revolutionary Road", "The Wrestler"
the new and improved"UnderWorld".....

The list keeps coming, man. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT.

My point is simply this. The people that "need" to work in these industries are to blame more than the Studios themselves. It's just as the kids that are being recruited to take their gaming skills and turn them into murderers by proxy flying drone killers...
The point is NO ONE IS being MADE ACCOUNTABLE OR RESPONSIBLE.

The whole of the creative artisans that honed their skills in media, graphics, even fine art wanted so much to live the life of an artist that could amount to something. But then because of the Brain-Drain MIC which is tied to the oligarchical economic manipulators, these same artisans sold their souls to the devil in order to be "gainfully" employed. From writers to model makers to camera personal
and even editors and directors. They have all sold their souls for the almighty promise of riches.

Incrementally each small contribution the artisan contribute is done by isolating them from realizing the impact of their craft. Therefore, like engineers and scientists that work in the MIC each is only given a mirco-view of the project they are working on never realizing their small daily work activity is being assembled into propaganda or weapons of mass destruction with far greater impact and intention than they want to believe.
That is, the destruction of the peaceful true nature of mankind, manipulated into a tool, a
weapon to control the mind and direction of mankind.

Yet people just fill up those theaters. And now with HDTV and no jobs or mental activity the population is plopping their mentally lazy asses down in front of these image beasts being systematically indoctrinated.
No it's not the Nature channel they focus on but the 3 to 6 second image bits of
repetitive-competitive violence and never ending excitement of survival at all cost.
Even the new style games shows of "survivor-like"
competitions, and "Lost".

You see most people can't relinquish themselves from living a vicarious life. Just look at the huge ridiculous ball stadium for the Super Bowl of stupefied weekend warriors. People that have never really experienced being engaged in their own life out side of the basic little league or
group of bicycle peddlers going no where, wearing their team commercial Advertising jersies. All to show they belong to something bigger and more important than their own conscious growth and awareness. Don't get me wrong though. I peddle too but not that way. I don't need the camaraderie of the unconscious.
The media is blinding the line, in peoples minds, to distinguish reality from fantasy.
SO now as mandated by FCC Law all TV's will be HIGH DEFINITION DIGITAL images.

Mean while unbeknown to most everyone and the media simply does not disclose the fact that the analog signals are being rerouted to be used in expanding military communications and band width requirements needed to Implament greater control over YOU and every thing YOU do.

NOW why the hell hasn't anyone picked up on this?
Is everyone friggen asleep?

Enough!

torture acceptance psychology is corpo-RAT

If Americans can be brainwashed into accepting torture as entertaining or erotic, corporations who ruin their employees' health, accident victims, and survivors of child or other domestic abuse will be disparaged by juries as whiners or responsible for their own victimization.
Such brainwashing will reduce or eliminate jury awards of damages. The brainwashing campaign is almost certainly not a military propaganda campaign. Porn industry is trying to expand a market segment, male chauvinists want to mistreat their women, women want rid of unwanted children and desire a scapegoat for their own problems, and businesses want to evade litigation for injuries. Tolerance for blood, gore, and intentional infliction of pain on another is their obvious scheme.

Why do Alternet headlines always ask dumb questions?

Why are they "glorifying" it? They're not. They're contributing to the conversation. Because we're having a conversation about it. Because America is having an internal discussion about what we should and shouldnt do in order to ensure our "safety." It only makes sense that the media should reflect this. And if, as part of this, TV writers want to explore the idea of the torturer as heroic and patriotic, it's a worthwhile contribution to the discourse. People love 24, but according to recent polls, tend to oppose torture. We enjoy contemplating these conundrums

Last night was a low for Heroes in more ways than one. It's use of AG imagery was so capitalistic it was sickening. It is possible for television to raise awareness and provide insightful commentary on situations in this world but shows like last nights heroes are doing nothing to raise awareness or even make a statement 6 years ago last nights show would have been cutting edge but last night it was just insulting and stupid.

While the media is often to blame for sending culture downmarket, in the case of torture I believe that it is merely reflecting societal proclivities. The all-too-familiar example of prison rape illustrates this point: otherwise sane and civilized people believe (or so their statements suggest) that rape in prison, usually after a mishap with the soap near a lovelorn ex-wrestler, is not only to be expected, it is part and parcel of the whole experience; without it, the prisoner could not be said to have paid for his crime.

The tender quality of mercy has long been in short supply in this so-called Christian nation, so it's hardly surprising that it shows a penchant for base and debased entertainment (especially when it involves people of a darker hue).

Now they are so mixed up that it's confusing. Certain things - like pictures from "real" wars are still forbidden to be shown as the "News". The showing of dead bodies of real US soldiers, or real foreign women and children killed by US air attacks is not allowed. These things are not entertaining and might upset someone's dinner. The kidnapping, torture and murder of real pretty white women and children is considered entertaining and is allowed. News must be entertaining after all.

Violence and aggression have always been a part of the american makeup ,from the very beginning, genocide of american indians , slavery, war for independence, revolutionary war,1st & 2nd world wars korean war, vietnam war, gulf wars, enamored with firearms etc. I think along with an increase in violence, there is an increase in sensitivity to violence. For a lot of my generation the sixties were the beginning of realizing that it is possible to live without fear and violence. The increase in violent video games,TV,movies, the media reporting on world conflicts and daily robberies and killings are saturating our senses, which may turn out to be a strange blessing, in that we may just tire of it and stop participating.

As far as a description of our current sad, even tragic, state of social relations, this article is right on target.

However, it is objectionable to attribute this attitude and orientation to barbarism as if it just sprung, new and shining, out of the heads of recent historical actors like Bush, Rove and the entire corporatized ideologies of our very recent times. It is true that here in the USA the expression of "Might is Right" (barbarism and animalistic behavior) has reached its maximum actualizations -- Hiroshima and Nagasaki are testament to that. But they only just beat Germany to that disturbing Distinction.

Sadism, Torture, Violence, Despotism in all its forms, Oppression and Exploitation have been with us for thousands of years, and still yet we are not even out of Tribal Forms of social organization!! This is a very deep and seldom discontinued aspect in this Long Road of development in our social relations. The USA has simply made it a mark of distinction and exceptionalism, especially with the advent of sophisticated technological Means. It has its political, religious, economic, social, moral and other aspects. Glorification of these behaviors certainly did not begin recently -- it's just a resurgence of atavisms couched in rational but not reasonable pretexts. Those pretexts have long, long roots deep in the layers of our history.

This has always been a country where "might makes right" has enjoyed a particularly positive reception and acquiescence. This is just one other episode.

The nature of the society

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The very nature of the society known as the United States of America is a barbaric one. No - not normal barbarism, but extreme. American people are nothing short of a raging, seething mob, eager to watch and gloat over some poor slob's flesh being systematically filetted off him as they cheer with every shriek of pain and horror. Just like the European middle & dark ages, all that it takes to justify this is to tell the mob that the guy/woman is bad. No proof needed. Collectively, Americans have no morals. Of course a few do, but the mob that tolerated the past eight years of blatant criminality have none. The #1 reason Obama is in office today is because these perfect jackasses were hit in the pocketbook deep enough for them to notice (finally) and close enough to the election (because their memories are the same as those suffering from Alzheimer's disease - extremely short).

Americans love prime time type snuff movies, guns, violence, imprisoning and executing the mentally ill and sex. Nothin better than mixing that all up, too. It's the new opiate of the masses. Like Rome, just before she fell into the dust.
Hell, we just had a misleader for 8 years who hailed himself as a Christian but who had all criteria for antisocial personality disorder and who put a firecracker in a bulldogs butt at a Yale football game for a big funny joke!

It's All About 'White' Power
Posted by: Nuuon on Feb 7, 2009 8:47 AM

It appears to be all about "white" power.

Would the "torture TV" shows (and movies) do as well if the torturer was Arab/Asian/African and the
torture victim was white/European/Western/capitalist (with the exact same story line or plot)? I think not.

It's not just about the torture, it's about WHO is doing the torturing.

It's about Hollywood(Hollyweird) playing its usual role of providing a legitimizing subtext for the torture authorized by the Bush crowd against anyone (especially those who are 'burnt of skin' and speak with an accent) who is labeled a terrorist.

Also in 24 they densenstize us to domestic spying. And the sattelites following us around save our lives--the angel in the sky. Oh, thankyou Big Brother!

It was oh so interesting to see that most of the terrorists in 24 are actually Americans, many of them white--bought and sold by evil twisted muslims or bent on America's destruction--but no reason is ever given. if they did that--Americans might stop to think.

if 24 isnt evidence that all our 'paranoia' of a fascist totalitarian regime isnt here or imminent i dont know what is--they are blatently telling us--yes we thing you are a threat and will torture you.

If Obama doesn't make sweeping transformative changes i think its time to invoke the constitution and rise up!

Wow, how amazing it is to see an article like this! For years it has been getting more and more apparant that the crimes committed, the sickness of them, is directly attributable to the violent horror shows on TV like 24. Shows with real, happy plots are shoved aside for ones like 24, for what? Conditioning? Unite, get mass media to take them off.

Why is the media glorifying inhumane, sadistic behavior?
Posted by: MJ Fields on Feb 3, 2009 12:35 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

The" News" was once separate from Entertainment

Now they are so mixed up that it's confusing. Certain things - like pictures from "real" wars are still forbidden to be shown as the "News". The showing of dead bodies of real US soldiers, or real foreign women and children killed by US air attacks is not allowed. These things are not entertaining and might upset someone's dinner. The kidnapping, torture and murder of real pretty white women and children is considered entertaining and is allowed. News must be entertaining after all.

DON'T PARTICIPATE

The very nature of the society known as the United States of America is a barbaric one. No - not normal barbarism, but extreme. American people are nothing short of a raging, seething mob, eager to watch and gloat over some poor slob's flesh being systematically filetted off him as they cheer with every shriek of pain and horror. Just like the European middle & dark ages, all that it takes to justify this is to tell the mob that the guy/woman is bad. No proof needed. Collectively, Americans have no morals. Of course a few do, but the mob that tolerated the past eight years of blatant criminality have none. The #1 reason Obama is in office today is because these perfect jackasses were hit in the pocketbook deep enough for them to notice (finally) and close enough to the election (because their memories are the same as those suffering from Alzheimer's disease - extremely short).

contrived violence. fear. revenge .ANGER. just[biblical] punishment at the hands of the righteous [o reilly?]but justifiably enraged Joe or humble 'average citizen' driven to extraordinary means/[torture almost pornographic violence] TO SAVE brutalized/killed/kidnapped mother/father/partner but most especially, child. From evil .then to punish. Must punish. It makes it easier to watch the families of gaza be shredded by weapons made in hoboken or columbine.o. I forgot. we don't SEE that on TV. Anyway,'They' are not really human.'They'bought it on themselves for being there. Also makes it easier to watch swat tazer your student activist. your 911 activist struggling to prise the scab of a degenerate reality. get used to it on TV. the 'first responder' of perception management. Its called "enduring freedom". Its what we all vote for.

Because we are a sadistic and inhumane "Christian" type country, that's why

Americans love prime time type snuff movies, guns, violence, imprisoning and executing the mentally ill and sex. Nothin better than mixing that all up, too. It's the new opiate of the masses. Like Rome, just before she fell into the dust.
Hell, we just had a misleader for 8 years who hailed himself as a Christian but who had all criteria for antisocial personality disorder and who put a firecracker in a bulldogs butt at a Yale football game for a big funny joke!

It's All About 'White' Power

In 24 jack baur is obviosuly Anglo-celtic descent--Scottish-American maybe. Teh league of the South will love that--it validates racist ideology. Thw white crusading hero--who torture and kills because he loves his country so much, and everyone must die.

TV violence

Wow, how amazing it is to see an article like this! For years it has been getting more and more apparant that the crimes committed, the sickness of them, is directly attributable to the violent horror shows on TV like 24. Shows with real, happy plots are shoved aside for ones like 24, for what? Conditioning? Unite, get mass media to take them off.
