"Everything You Can Imagine, We Do Not Have": A Q&A with Gaza-Based Journalist Sameh A. Habeeb

By Zahra Hankir, Indypendent. Posted January 8, 2009.

"Today I wanted to go to the market to bring home some food. Thank God, I did not go; there was a massacre from artillery shells."

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

Twenty-three-year-old Sameh A. Habeeb, a photojournalist based in Gaza City, hardly sleeps. The sounds of the bombings keep him awake.

Habeeb seldom leaves his home for fear of being killed by sporadic bombing, but he has slipped out several times to take pictures and to obtain chilling first hand accounts of daily life ever since the Israeli attacks on Gaza began on Saturday December 27.

During the days, his main priority is to find a place with electricity so he can charge his laptop and connect to the Internet. His goal is to get the word out about what is happening on the ground in Gaza. He works primarily from his phone, calling up a number of sources, from doctors to media contacts to human rights workers.

Habeeb is one of few local journalists in besieged Gaza who are attempting to reach out to international media outlets by way of the Internet and the phone. "I'm not sleeping so you are welcome to call me on this number in the night," says one of his blog notes.

Aware that mainstream media have fallen short of reporting on the crisis, in part because international reporters have been banned from entering Gaza but also due to political biases, he has been issuing daily reports of the situation. The reports can be found on his blog, on his Facebook account and on arabisto.com.

Habeeb was born and raised in Gaza, and has worked in civil society for many years. He has also worked as a journalist at the Ramattan News Agency, a regional media facility based in Gaza. He has offered his journalistic work to various organizations worldwide for free.

The young journalist is currently confined to his home with his three sisters, his two brothers, his parents and his grandmother with barely any food.

During the interview below with the Indypendent, Habeeb speaks from his phone over the sound of persistent bombing that he has grown used to. "Can you hear that one?" he says. Boom. Boom. "That was an F-16 [bomb]. I know how an F-16 sounds. I can distinguish what types of bombs they are."

His voice trembles a little, but he goes on speaking, even after being asked if he would like a moment to collect himself. "You know that I can speak and that I will speak at whatever hour and in whatever situation," he says, resolutely.

It is almost 1 a.m. in occupied Palestine.

Zahra Hankir: What is the current humanitarian situation on the ground in Gaza?

Sameh A. Habeeb: If we counted the things that are missing and that we need, we would not finish [this interview]. There is no bread. There is no sugar. There is no gas. There is no fuel. There is no electricity and there is no wood. There is no cement. Everything you can imagine, we do not have. And this was a problem that started with the blockade and that has accentuated since the attacks began. It was preplanned. It is not only a matter of a rocket being fired here and there. It is a strategy that Israel has followed.

As for daily life, and the humanitarian situation, Israel is telling the world that they are not allowing a humanitarian crisis [to unfold] in Gaza. [Israeli foreign minister] Tzipi Livni is a big fool, because she is trying to convince the international community and those working on the Palestinian cause that Israel is helping with the humanitarian situation. But on the ground, she is allowing a big catastrophe to continue. Gaza was in need before the siege. During the siege, Israel was allowing some 40 trucks carrying basic commodities (cans, goods, etc) in. Now, at the time while the war is taking place, they say they are allowing commodities to move in, but they are allowing nothing in! Thirteen trucks with commodities are not enough for a population of a million and a half. They say they opened the crossing, and that everything is okay, but this is a big lie.

Some houses do not have water, as power is needed. Israel has targeted many wells of water in the middle of the Gaza strip, and a well that was in the north. Add to that the coastal authorities were saying that Israel was not allowing them to bring materials to purify water…

Tomorrow, I will be visiting one of the doctors at al-Shifa hospital to investigate the types of weapons that are being used.

As for the medical situation, since the beginning of the siege, around 270 people died because they were not able to leave Gaza for treatment, or were not able to get medicine during the blockade. Medical machines and equipment were also not available, as well as spare parts. Today, there is a very big problem in hospitals because of this. Hospital management has called medical students in their senior, second or third level to help at the hospitals.

ZH: What has been the general attitude of Palestinians in Gaza towards Hamas?

SAH: The main concern for the Palestinian people now is how to find food, how to light candles, how to keep warm. They do not think much about politics. Generally, support for Hamas is still there, and the decisive battle would be proving whether Hamas will have support or not as it still did not [attack] "hot" areas.

ZH: What is your current living situation?

SAH: I live in Gaza City, two kilometers from the Israeli borders. Since the beginning of the blockade, which was imposed 20 months ago, and since the beginning of the war, my life has been turned upside down. There is no gas. No power. No Internet. I charge my laptop by going here and there to get Internet, but generally, there is no fuel, no gasoline, and no oil. In the humanitarian aspect, we do not have anything now. Today I wanted to go to the market to bring home some food. Thank God, I did not go; there was a massacre from artillery shells. Israelis hit the market -- the busiest market in Gaza.

From suicide to genocide.

ZH: Would you say that this is genocide?

SAH: Yes. The big number of victims indicates that this is genocide. Israel says it is attacking Hamas, but on the ground, we are seeing that most of those killed are civilians. The world has to realize and has to know that Israel is not doing as it says -- fighting Hamas and terror -- and that this is part of the media blackout of Israel. As the days pass, the crisis will become much worse. More people will have less access to basic needs.

Genocide?

I have to think that if Israel wanted to commit genocide, the Palestinians would have been long gone by now.

…we are seeing that most of those killed are civilians.

I wonder what Sameh thinks suicide bombers are?

The world has to realize and has to know that Israel is not doing as it says -- fighting Hamas and terror…

Sounds like he’s admitting that Hamas is indeed a terrorist organization. By reading articles and posts on this website, I was under the impression that they were a legitimate governing body.

Does Hamas and the Gazians really want peace?

Does Hamas and the Gazian people really want peace? If the there were a simple button to be manipulated that would bring a cease-fire and peace, would Hamas push that button?

Hamas wants this conflict! It HAD a cease-fire but broke it. Hamas WANTS to use the propaganda to generate continuing strife. Hamas and the Gazians fire their rockets at civilian areas from their schools and populated areas just so that they may reap this propaganda, as this report indicates.

Such a button actually exists!

Hamas and the Gazians will NOT use it! All they have to do is to NOT use the firing button on the right side of their rocket launcher and cover a safety clasp over it. But they will not.

To do so requires discipline and patience. They have neither. Their immature mind is unable to see ahead to a time when they could not only live in peace, but also actually accumulate wealth.

Hamas' goal is endless war and violence. Without conflict they cease to exist. Unfortunately, there are no real voices on the Palestinian side for anything other than more terror.

Unfortunately, it looks like a nightmare of a growing number of people in India getting angrier at Pakistan for "defending" terrorists are beginning to entertain the idea of imitating Israel and I hear it's coming from the younger folks. Maybe like Christianity, Hinduism is losing its identity to war and terror these days?

India to pull a Gaza on Pakistan?

If India gets put on trial, you can count of sparks of racism from the US and the EU and their historical double standard treatment of handling terrorists in one nation vs another will be on world wide display.

P.S.: It seems that in India, most people distrust their government very much kinda like the deep red states.

40 years of Israeli Violations

...."pierrot"after 1967 countless perfectly illegal civil(!) settlemets all over the occupied territories for 40 years in blatant violation of the Geneva Convention, countless UN-Resolutions, the Human Rights Convention, etc."

As Pierrot points out Israel has flaunted UN conventions/resolutions for 40YEARS, the latest ceasefire was broken by Israel when it killed 6 Palestinians on Nov 4 2008. Prior to that it had blockaded supplies of food and medical aid in breach of the ceasefire agreement, after intense provocation the alternative to use rockets was taken by the Palestinians.

Not one Israeli was killed from these attacks, though their lives became fractionally intolerable in relation to Palestinian living conditions. Israel has since massacred over 700 Palestinians, more than 200 are children, with a situation Israel has deliberately provoked.

The big question is why Israel persists in impoverishing its neighbour to the point of torture? And why the world blithely accepts such inhuman degradation of the Palestinian people?

The answer it seems is that any expansionary policies of the Israeli government will be tolerated by the world's various powers, irrespective of International Law and Human Rights guidelines. Is this because it is a rogue state nuclear power, that refuses any International access to its nuclear programs, or because it is the biggest army base in the Middle East controlling access to the majority of the world's oil resources?

It is unconscionable for the Jewish people of the world to decry the horrors of the Holocaust, and to wear that tragedy as a metaphor for their religious persecution, when their own Israeli government's policies EXCLUDE NON JEWISH people from many aspects of a democratic society ( in the same way that the Nazis wished to exclude Jewish people from European society/prosperity/way of life/religious freedom/right to exist ), and daily expose the lives of the Palestinian people to extreme life-threatening hardship.

The persistent coveting and stealing of Palestinian land, through the continuous killing of Palestinian people makes a mockery of the Ten Commandments, for Jewish, Christian and Moslem people alike. So long as any religion can deny non-believers the right to life for their belief in another faith system, this interminable inhumanity will continue, especially when the non-believers have some land that you ( as a believer ) would like to sell on.

Put Your Self In Their Shoes

The fact of the matter here is that too many people are looking at the political side to this and ignoring the moral and human side. You'd think after reading such a heart wrenching account, some of the above the commentors would actually show some compassion.

Let's take a second to try and disconnect ourselves from the comfort of our cubicles and offices and try and imagine what life is like for the population of Gaza. The person interviewed above says it himself, the civilians of Gaza are at a disconnect to the rest of the world. How could they not be? They don't have the luxury to sip cafe lattes and read the news and get different perspectives on Hamas or Israel or anything going on in the world really. These are desperate people in a desperate situation, not just since the attacks started, but far longer than that. It's easy for people here to condemn the support for Hamas, but we don't know what it's like to live over there. We don't know what it's like to live in occupied territory, especially with the suspect human rights record of Israel over at least the past 40 years. How could we possibly understand what it feels like to be a resident of Gaza? The people of Gaza are not granted the same luxuries of information gathering in as we are here.

Neither Israel or Hamas is an innocent party here. But what I do know however, is that the death of this many civilians is IMMORAL AND WRONG. It is not necessary, this is not 'collateral damage', this is targeting of a civilian population. You cannot rationally defend the death of this many children. You cannot rationally defend the Israeli bombing of a UN School, just like you can't rationally defend a suicide bomber.

Enough is enough. Stop punishing the civilians. What ever happened to compassion?

I'm really ashamed of the degree to which my government, the government of the United States (which, by the way, has fast-tracked its way into becoming THE most despised government on earth) gives Israel a free hand in launching genocidal attacks on the increasingly desperate Palestineans. Anyone with a basic level of common sense would understand that people who have so little to lose will do things that appear quite radical, like elect members of Hammas to political office, shoot rockets into Israel, and send suicide bombers (young men with NO viable future) into Israel. Does Israel REALLY believe it is breaking the will of the Palestinean people by destroying Gaza and killing scores of civilians?! Does it really believe the Hammas insurgents will pack up their bags and go away?! Could the Israelis be so naive to think that Palestinean civilians will become so disenchanted with Hammas (resulting from this current bombing and land incursion assault) that they'll rebel against the Hammas movement?

All Israel is doing is strengthening the hand of Hammas, not only in Gaza, but also in Iran and much of the middle east (not to mention much of the rest of the world, where it is viewed with increasing sympathy). Someday the United States and Israel will pay a big price for the ugly blotch on history that is the Palestinean genocide. I fear that price will come in the form of rebellions in surrounding Arab countries, where Muslim fundamentalist radicals will overthrow governments that have traditionally been patsies of the USA, and replace them with militant governments intent on destroying Israel and the US at any price. We have only ourselves to blame for such an outcome. We unfortunately have learned all the wrong lessons from 9/11!!!!

This is why there were tunnels, the reason Israel broke the cease-fire
Posted by: fanny666 on Jan 8, 2009 8:40 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The blockade- which prevented basic supplies even before this latest invasion- is a good example of how Israeli policy is so draconian to be counter-productive. Gazans have had to smuggle food water and medicine in through tunnels. Of course those tunnels were probably being used for smuggling weapons in as well. Which is the excuse Israel needed to break the cease fire on November 4, when the US media was focused on the election.

It's an interesting fact about this conflict that citizens of the United States are much more propagandized about Israeli innocence/morality than Israelis are. A good example is the idea that Hamas broke the cease-fire with rocket launches. This is patently false. Israel broke it by bombing tunnels. You could argue that they had the right or that it was a good thing to do, but it's simply false to say that it did not break the cease-fire.

From the Jerusalem Post: "Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said that while Israel wanted to continue the truce, it could not tolerate tunnel digging... When Israel agreed to the truce it didn't agree that while there was calm, Hamas would exploit it to dig tunnels, whether they are for smuggling weapons, for perpetrating attacks or kidnapping soldiers," she said. "Therefore, if it becomes clear that is what's happening, it is the government's responsibility to act.""

In other words, Israel broke the cease-fire because they didn't like something that was happening.

The Israeli daily newspaper Ha'aretz was a little more blunt about it: "Palestinians have fired more than 200 rockets on Israel since the Gaza border region flared up November 4, after six Hamas operatives were killed when the Israel Defense Forces destroyed a tunnel near the border."

In other words, the Hamas rocket attacks happened AFTER the IDF air attack.

From the online version of Yedioth Ahronoth, the biggest newspaper in Israel: For the first time since the ceasefire took effect in June, IDF forces operated deep in the Gaza Strip Tuesday night in a bid to collapse a tunnel located 250 meters (273 yards) from the border – and which terror groups intended to use for kidnapping Israeli soldiers."

The IDF goes on to say that they called a temporary "Time-Out" of the cease-fire, and that these bombs didn't count:

"The IDF is committed to maintaining the ceasefire and is acting accordingly," Ynet was told. "In this case, we had a credible threat indicating soldiers might be kidnapped and we had no choice but to act in order to thwart it."

As for the chances of the operation effectively ending the ceasefire, the sources said that while that was taken into consideration, the defense establishment believed the chances of that happening were slim but that risking a kidnapping attempt "was not an option."

To be honest, I get annoyed when people quibble about who started what in the latest acts of violence. At some level, it doesn't really matter. Israel needs to get back to its borders or there will never be peace. But the notion that Hamas broke the most recent cease-fire is utterly false.

Hamas did NOT break the cease-fire, ISRAEL DID, on Nov. 4/08. See the 'quick facts' sheet by Canadians for Justice & Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) published Jan. 2/09 at: http://www.cjpme.org (link at right, near top)

Even CNN now admits it, citing other REPUTABLE sources:

Of course their hacks still try to spin it in the opposite direction...

I doubt there's anything that can be said that will cause a zionist to wake up and go "a-ha...so that's how peace feels!"

Memories are short when it comes to 1948 and 1967, and very long when it comes to the holocaust of 1939-1945...but the one thing we ALL need to remember is that history and time are like the pendulum on a clock.

First it goes all the way to one side (Germany in WWII) then it goes all the way to the other (Israel's 6 day war)...it will swing to the other side again with even greater violence. If we don't get our collective asses to the peace table, and start out with REALITY..the pendulum will stop in the middle because there will be no one left to tend the clock.

Not even a zionist.

One can tell that Mr Cookie, writing from an article above, is truly bias against Palistinians/Gaza. His attitude is as asking a dying man to prove he is still alive. I feel for all those losing their lives and loved ones just that Israel can commit genocide in a slow fashion... using American weapons and money. Mr Cookie (if that being your real name).. America has lost all credibility with the World... due to this blind partnership with Israel... Actually we could stop this war now... But we have a government, and idiot President, that really does not care about our Country.... Ring it dry.... financially and physically...which has been done quite well in the past years. I do not wish Cookie bad, only that he and the other Israelies showed compassion and sympathy for those who are not on America's payroll... and must live on their own.

I am not minimized any loss of life as death sucks but I also don;t think that haveing better weapons makes a certain group less "moral" ot less "irresposible". Put Responsibility Where It Belongs - On Hamas, and stop crying
Posted by: iris89 on Jan 8, 2009 1:22 PM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Hi Everyone

Apparently this journalist does not understand reality and cause and effect. In order order to understand what this struggle is all about, one must understand Hamas' goals, largely derived from its ideological paternity to the Egyptian Muslim Brothehood. As a Sunni extremist offshoot of the Brotherhood, Hamas' raison d'etre is Israel's destruction -- nothing less will do. Despite my instinctive belief that one should try to negotiate a way out of this dilemma no matter the odds, I have concluded that the only way out of this mess is to separate Hamas' entire military and political leadership from the oppressed citizenry of Gaza (and yes, it is absolutely a mischaracterization of fact to assert that Hamas is the legitimate ruler of Gaza). Easier said than done you say. But as long as Hamas rules Gaza, no amount of cajoling is going to end the vicious cycle of terror that Hamas is inflicting first and foremost on its own beaten-down Palestinian victims as well as on Israel.

Simple solution, STOP sending rockets into Israel, and accept monitors instead of crying when Hamas is responsible for ALL since they lit the proverbial fuse – get real and correctly place the blame where it belongs – ON HAMAS.

until now. Thanks alternet. Americans hate to admit that the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan did not benefit this country. It did benefit Israel. It killed thousands of Americans and over a million Iraqis. It nearly bankrupted this country. Sending weapons to Israel and unwaivering, unconditional support of Israel does not help the average American. We don't like admitting our little favorite pal in the Middle East is slaughtering people. Here's what happens in Palestine on a daily basis:

Otherwise, you could have your food, gas, water, phone service, and other supplies and even security. Thank Hamas for starting this mess, for continually firing rockets into Israel, for refusing to accept outside observers to prevent weapon smuggling and rocket firings, for investing more money and effort on weapons and terrorist training than education and infrastructure, for waking up the Israeli dragon next door. Thank the majority of Gazans who supported Hamas vs. the PA for your current conditions. Are the Palestinians in the West Bank suffering the same fate today? NO. So look to your own for your fair share of the blame for the suffering of your civilians.

Hamas and some vocal Muslim clerics have never said anything but 'death to Israel' and 'kill the jews'.

And they run the Gaza.

Israel should be admired for their restraint. I don't think Hamas would show any mercy.

And it is truly unfortunate that the posters here egg on the Gazans by writing their anti-Israel vitriol.

Israel will not roll over. Western governments will see to that.

Hamas preaches jihad. Well, they asked for War, and they got it. And now they're crying via their sympathizers and satraps how terrible it is.

Let's Get Real - Hamas Alone Is Responsible For All That Has Occurred

Let’s get real and stop falsely accusing Israel of creating a humanitarian crises when it is Hamas that has done so. Hamas could bring a halt to this crisis immediately if it wanted to! All it has to do is stop firing rockets at Israel, provide assurances with monitors that it will NEVER do so again, and return the kidnapped Israel soldier and his kidnappers – the war situation would them abruptly STOP. So let’s get real.

Wars should be eliminated and at present one religion is responsible for over 90% of the violence on earth as pointed out by an Australian newspaper as follows:

"Did you know that 90-95% of the conflicts in the world today are Muslims fighting non-muslims or each other? " [source - The Weekend Australian, November 26-27, 2005 AD]"

I am getting very tired of hearing Palestinians and other Ishmaelite crying crocodile tears and always trying to put the blame for what they do on others such as their conspiracy weavers tried to do about who did 9/11/2001 attack on the World Trade Center, etc. Screaming against what they call wrongful occupations when they are guilty of occupying Byzantine territory, Palestine which belongs to the Israelites [see Numbers the 34 th. Chapter in any Bible for proof of this, and their outright greed as they have over 98% of the Middle East, but still greedly want the less than 2% belonging to their sister tribe Israel] - its time we get real and put an end to this so the world can stop experiencing continuous Ishmaelite induced strife such as shooting rockets at Israel.

Solution, dissolve this false religion and rid the earth of at least 90% of the violence. But of course the politicians will not do what is needed since as Jeremiah 10:23 says, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." (Authorized King James Bible; AV). To read detailed information, go to the following article:

Learn the truth per "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (Authorized King James Bible; AV). Israel is the true title holder to all the land of Palestine. For proof read my article or the 34 th. Chapter of Numbers. Hamas and their associates are nothing but squatters – get real. Read my writings that give proof of this.

Whose Land Is It? A Study of The Land of Palestine

INTRODUCTION:

Land title research in many areas is a very difficult task. In Mexico, the titles to farm land are so clouded it can take years to adequately search them. In some places the granting of title to land by a legitimate granter can go back over 3,500 years. One such place is the land of Palestine where current occupancy has no relationship to whom holds title.

Even some of the most famous buildings in the land of Palestine are actually squatters on land to which others hold title. The most famous instance of this is the Temple Mount and its squatter mosque that sits on the site of the ancient temple of ancient Hebrew kingdom and belongs to the Hebrews. This mess with many occupying land as squatters for which others hold title makes for an untenable position when the rightful title holder takes back his/her land, especially so when it is centuries later.

The present situation in much of Palestine is like the battle between the squatters and the owners, titleholders of land in the old west in the United States; to wit, squatters wanting to continue to squat and land owners wanting their land back. However, some additional situations enter the picture since many of the land owners - their ancestors - were forced off the their land by the Romans and by later Caliphs. Now of course the rule of law should be applied and the squatters finally brought to their day of reckoning with reality, they have no title to the land they are on.

Love of Neighbor Requires Exposure of Falsehoods and Wrong Beliefs

Now, with respect Palestine there is a scripture all should consider, 1 Peter 3:11, “Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.” (Authorized King James Bible; AV).
But neither the Ishmaelites – Hamas, nor the Hebrews – Israelites are considering it. Strange as they are both descendants of Abraham, one by Ishmael and one by Issac.

Now, even though the Ishmaelites control over 98% of the Middle East, they are greedy for the less than 2% of the Middle East belonging to their brother tribe, the Hebrews – Israelites. This is NOT the way for the descendants of Abraham who walked with Almighty God (YHWH) to act.

Why is this? It is because neither is walking with the TRUE GOD as did Abraham, but both are being mislead by none other than Satan the Devil per 2 Corinthians 4:4, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” (AV).

In fact, the Ishmaelites instead of pursuing peace in accordance with what Jesus (Yeshua) the Son of God said at Matthew 22:37-40 said, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (AV).

This is clearly shown by what one Australian Newspaper said, "Did you know that 90-95% of the conflicts in the world today are Muslims fighting non-muslims or each other? " [source - The Weekend Australian, November 26-27, 2005 AD]"

However, what the world needs is peace, not war. So clearly we can see that the Ishmaelites are in a false religion not walking with Almighty God (YHWH), the God of Abraham; nor are the Hebrews who do not recognize his son, Jesus (Yeshua), anymore than the Ishmaelites.

All need to be showing love for neighbor by exposing false beliefs that are ruining mankind by misleading him from walking with the True God of Abraham, Almighty God (YHWH).

NOW A QUESTION

NOW A QUESTION

Why do the residents of Gaza keep firing rockets and mortars at Israel if they do NOT like the humanitarian conditions it creates? Is it some kind of irrational insane self induced flagellations. It just does NOT make sense to me.

That makes as much sense as a carpenter who hits his thumb instead of the nail purposely doing it again and again – most would consider this a mental case as I do Hamas’ actions, and those of suicide bombers.

For those wishing to discuss this with me or ask questions, go to:
