Karl Rove Destroyed My Life

By Paul Alexander, The Daily Beast. Posted December 27, 2008.

How a former governor -- and a rising star in the Democratic Party -- ended up mopping floors in prison and how he's fighting to get out.

Last week, Al Gore sent an email message urging supporters to give money to Don Siegelman's legal defense fund. Gore is the latest in a string of high profile supporters to suggest Siegelman, the former Governor of Alabama, was the victim of a Republican plot when he was found guilty of bribery, conspiracy and fraud in 2006, and sentenced to seven years in prison.

Now, in the waning days of the Bush administration, Siegelman is trying to win back his freedom -- not to mention his good name -- in a courtroom in Atlanta. Earlier this year, an appeals court granted his release after he had served nine months, saying the Governor's appeal had raised "substantial questions" about the case against him. Siegelman's cause was helped by a bipartisan group of 54 former state attorneys general from across the country who filed a federal appeals brief supporting his bid to overturn the conviction. Republican insiders have also come forward to say Siegelman was unfairly targeted by Rove and his circle.

Making it in prison depends on one's level of tolerance. I'm used to mopping in my wife's kitchen. It was just a bigger floor.

Siegelman's appeal was heard earlier this month and the verdict will determine whether he returns to prison to finish out his sentence, or goes free.

How did a former governor -- and a rising star in the Democratic Party -- end up in a situation like this?

On June 29, 2006, Siegelman and Richard Scrushy, the CEO of HealthSouth, a chain of medical rehabilitation services with facilities both in the United States and abroad, were found guilty by a jury in Montgomery, Alabama, of federal bribery charges. A year later, Judge Mark Fuller, who had clear conflicts of interest in the case -- a company in which he holds a major stake received a $175 million government contract at one point during the legal proceedings -- sentenced Scrushy to almost seven years in prison. Siegelman got 88 months.

There was one central transaction that sent these men to prison for all this time. Not long after Siegelman had been elected governor in 1998, he convinced Scrushy to contribute $500,000 to a political action committee, which was supporting the establishment of a lottery in Alabama to pay for higher education. At the same time, he talked Scrushy into serving on a state hospital regulatory board on which he had already served three times -- appointed by both Democrats and Republicans -- and from which he had recently resigned. To US attorney Leura Canary, the wife of William "Bill" Canary, the close friend and former business associate of Karl Rove, the act constituted bribery, for which she charged the two men. Among the many other charges, dismissed by the jury, this was the one that stuck.

QUESTION: First, was the act for which you and Richard Scrushy convicted actually a crime?

SIEGELMAN: Fifty-four state attorneys general filed a friend of the court brief stating that it has never been a crime in America for a politician or a public official to appoint a contributor to anything, whether it's ambassador or cabinet member or a member of a board or an agency. The only thing that is a crime is if you swap a position for money. And there has got to be an express agreement that's provable. Otherwise, the United States Supreme Court says it's an infringement on a person's first amendment right to freely associate and make contributions.

QUESTION: The case with you and Scrushy seems especially weak.

SIEGELMAN: Scrushy had just recently resigned from the board and the person I had defeated, Job James, had appointed one of Scrushy's vice presidents to the position. When I got elected I called Scrushy and said, "I want you to serve in my administration like you did in three previous administration." And he said, "Oh, Governor, do I have to? I just resigned from that board. Can't I get you the name of somebody?" I said, "Nope, it's either you or nobody." So he went onto the board reluctantly. And this poor guy is still in prison today.

Sadly, you are correct. Without a complete and total awakening of the collective awareness of the entire planet there is no hope, and there is NOTHING to indicate that this will occur. Even the positive attitude of "we can fix it with honesty and hard work" is an illusion. In fact it is the entrenched belief that puts the INDIVIDUAL FIRST and everyone and everything else second that is perpetuating divisiveness and conflict world wide. Any thing short of a complete metamorphosis will guarantee our demise. There our no gray areas anymore. We have arranged and rearranged our present level of consciousness to the point of nauseating repetitiveness. If the butterfly does not appear in short order then the pupae will rot in the hot sun.

I had to read in history books how the fasacists of Italy & Germany operated. As an American, I've been able to experience it first hand for the past 8-yrs. If Obama and the Democrats in Congress turn a blind eye to this destruction of the rule of law, our next "Unitary President"(fascist) may very well finish off this "Noble Experiment in Democracy".

was nearly complete under Rove.

And it hasn't ended with Bush being out.

This sort of injustice was very widespread and we need to see the perpertuators brought to justice.

We need the FBI to get onto proving connections between this case and Rove personally. Rove should then be charged and sent to prison himself.

Don Siegelman case
Posted by: bccmeteorites on Dec 27, 2008 4:35 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I crawled the internet looking for a decent newspaper to post an opinion piece on this case and other vital issues. I went through the entire state of Alabama and lo and behold what I found was absolutely eyeopening. Even in major cities the press is lacking any comprehensive method of access to a decent and free press. The level of access and censorship is astounding. No wonder Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee consistently lag behind in education, civil rights, and lead in such things as teen pregnancy, KKK as an organization of civic pride. There is a concerted effort by the powers that be, in a race to the bottom of the barrel of existence. These people are dumbed down to the lowest common denominators of humanity. They even have a "flagship NASA center" in Huntsville Alabama, which from all appearances is probably shock full of undereducated racists. Even the major cities have a press with a mindset more akin to small rural towns from the 1950's. I was going to say that Don Siegelman should file a federal racketeering lawsuit (conspiracy) against the prosecutors and he would probably win in any enlightened State of the Union. But in Alabama, Mississippi and similar southern states; he's going to be swimming against a wave of civic pride in institutionalized ignorance. My advice to Don Siegelman, get the hell out of there and let Karl Rove have his adoring masses.

The Dems better have something up their sleeve for post 1-20-09 like a stack of Arrest Warrants.
Subpoenas used to mean something, carry a punishment for non compliance.
If the next admin wants average ameircans to hold these demands for appearance in a Court of law in Higher regard than 'Sale At Macy's ' Flyer, they'd better start by arresting those who have ignored them for so long- Rove & Meyers.1-20-2009 should go down in Republican History like 10-13-1307 (Friday the 13th)for the Knights Templar

The 800,000 figure I estimate from the minor pothead yearly arrests. The number of those wrongly held is probably much higher. Luckily, you are an ex-governor less likely to be tortured or worse. Surely, you have gained a greater appreciation of the plight of millions human beings in bondage throughout the world. During my illegal detention, I have become an Abolitionist. A man like you could offer moral leadership to the millions in chains.

In the waning hours of this administration, the pardons will be flying through fast and furious. Pardons for people who committed real crimes.

Do you think that this dispicible, half-witted frat boy will even consider a pardon for Don Siegleman?

Fortunately the Bush Administration, in preparation for their permanent possession of power, has given Obama unprecedented powers for pre-emptive action against dissenters. The criminals of the Bush Administration certainly will dissent and resist any attempts to arrest them. Therefore the powers secured for the presidency by Bush should secure the arrest and prosecution of former Bush Administration criminals.

DOJ MUST BE COMPELLED TO COMPLY WITH THE RULE OF LAW
Posted by: IsidoroRDL on Dec 27, 2008 6:10 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
A review of the evidence will establish that DOJ's violation of the Rule of Law in taking actions against Governor Don Siegelman is not an anomaly. The pattern and practices of DOJ during the past 8 years under White House Counsel/Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was built upon the past collusion of DOJ with the Federal Courts to usurp Congressional mandates under Civil Rights and Watergate legislation.

Thus, I oppose the confirmation of Eric Holder. His record proves that he will continue this abrogation of the Rule of Law. The evidence confirm that the pardon of Marc Rich from accountability for his alleged criminal acts was not an anomaly, but in fact a pattern and practice of Eric Holder as both a Beltway attorney/lobbyist and a former official in DOJ. Like Attorney General Gonzlez. Eric Holder has repeatedly violate his oath as an attorney to "serve the American public," by preventing accountability for bad acts:

First, in his previous senior positions at DOJ supported the policy of non compliance with Congressional statutes, i.e. the use of signing statements to disregard the protections of the Right to Financial Privacy Act and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Also, he supported the policy that the public has no right to hold DOJ accountable for malfeasance under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

Coinciding with Eric Holder's tenure in senor positions at DOJ is my record of past civil trials/appeals against DOJ's violation of the right of U.S. citizen and nonresident Hispanics before the U.S. Tax Court, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 11th, and District of Columbia Circuits, as well as the United States Supreme Court, , i.e., See Martinez v. Lamagno and DOJ/DEA, 515 U.S. 417 (1995)(DOJ asserted absolute immunity for negligent driving by DEA agent having sex and drunk while driving causing an accident-"James Bond Defense"), see also Organization JD Ltda. v. Assist U.S. Attorney Arthur P. Hui and U.S. Dept of Justice, 2nd Cir. No. 93-6019 and 96-6145; and, Lopez v. First Union, 129 F3.rd. 1186 (11th Cir. 1997)(Litigation successfully stopped the unlawful disclosing of information by financial institutions and the illegal seizing by DOJ of all nonresident Hispanic bank accounts in the U.S.)(http://justiciaportodo.webs.com).

Second, in retaliation for the above litigation he has been the linchpin in an ongoing federal criminal conspiracy by DOJ against me. I have been punished for petitioning for a Congressional investigation of the collusion and malfeasance of the DOJ and the Federal Court policies in violation of the Constitutional and statutory rights of my U.S. citizen Son and I as a fathers (http://www.liamsdad.org/others/isidoro.shtml).

As such he retaliated, punished and stigmatized me in violation of 18 U.S.C. 241, 242, 1204, and 1513: (a) because I litigated against DOJ for damages and to compel it to comply with its ministerial duty under Treaty, US Code and Va UCCJEA, to enforce my statutory rights as a father and attorney (http://www.liamsdad.org/others/isidoro.shtml); and, (b) because I exercised my First Amendment right to petition Congress to oppose the confirmation of John G. Roberts based on his false statement to Congress and other acts outside of his judicial capacity in furtherance of aiding and abetting the criminal obstruction of my right as a father to compel DOJ to comply the Treaty and Virginia's UCCJEA (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~isidoror/id6.html).

Thus, Eric Holder will be sued in a civil action under the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act ("RICO"), 18 U.S.C. 1961 et seq., http://capwiz.com/congressorg/sbx/f/?aid=12313551&r=1; and, http://capwiz.com/congressorg/sbx/f/?aid=12332481&r=1. It would be inappropriate to name him as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States.

Isidoro Rodriguez, Esq.

Finally, a journalist willing to take on the Don Siegelman case. This man is a victim of a Political Witch Hunt led by Karl Rove & his thugs. Mr. Siegelman was guilty of nothing, but that didn't stop Karl Rove from using lies to have him imprisoned for no reason at all, except he was a Political Opponent. There are other Political Prisoners whose imprisonment was masterminded by Rove & thugs that also need investigating. Think it can't happen in America? It has happened. Rove had many of their political opponents imprisoned on trumped up charges. Also, isn't anyone else suspicious of the deaths of people set to testify against Rove? 2 were recent plane crashes. The record of one, possibly both, was changed. It happened on a clear, sunny day. However the investigation report was changed to claim the "plane went down during a storm". Baloney, there was no storm. Many of the witnesses are turning up dead who were to testify against Rove. Suspicious? You bet your life it is suspicious! Don Siegelman does not belong in prison. Give his cell to Karl Rove & his thugs, they are the ones who belong in prison.

My reaction to this story is a little strange. At first, I recoiled at the use of "this isn't fair". Of course this is NOT fair, But We let it happen! Then, while reading the story and thinking about it some more, I can identify with it too well.

I can tell My 'story' and show MORE mistreatment or things not being "fair" which covers most of My adult life, but to what end?! I am NOT a "Politician", Rock Star or well known, so My "story" has no 'appeal' for the Public.

I can only hope that IF Siegleman is successful in His fight to make things more "fair", that the "trickle down" effect has a chance of reaching Me, too!

Bush/Cheney/Rove Crime Regime Walks Off Scott Free From 1,000's of Felonious Crimes
Posted by: colleenwhalen on Dec 27, 2008 10:50 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The list of heinous crimes committed by the Bush, Cheney, Rove Crime Regime is so long I'd need an hour to just type all their felonies. Let's just puruse the short list.....legalizing sexual torture, genocide against a soverign nation, environmntal rape, lying to Congrees, election fraud, leading us into a 6 year war based on a lie - fighting an enemy (in the wrong country) which did not exist.

The abject apathy, ignorance and diffidence of the American public baffles me. We are a nation asleep at the wheel, a nation of somnabulist sleepwalkers. Americans care more about who wins American Idol and following trash crap reality TV like "Rock of Love" on MTV than the rape of democracy.

This last election proved Americans don't care a rats ass about Iraq - the issue was the economy - proof of American's collective greed and self interest.

There won't be War Crimes Tribunal for genocide, Bush and his minions will skate out scott free. Maybe this fellow will someday be released from prision - but will Rove and his henchmen be punished?

I seriously doubt it.

Meanwhile, Obama appears to be a total fucking pile of mush Centrist - even leaning to the right by pandering to former Bush Administration Secty of Defense Robert Gates. Can you believe it? The moron who has mismanaged the war in Iraq was asked by Obama to stay in his job! The Obama Cabinet and majority of other appointee jobs are being given to die hard Clinton staffers. So much for the "change" Obama promised to bring to Washington.

I don't expect ANYTHING fresh, new, progressive from Obama. He just appointed his Secretary of Agrigculture from the
crypto-fascist ranks of a whore supporter of transnational corporate agribusiness - a solid supporter of "corporate welfare" for corporate huge farms and GMO genentically engineered crops. A big campaign pleaded with Obama to appoint a Sustainable Agriculture appointee for Secretary of Agricutlure but he turned a deaf ear.

If I had $15,000 cash, I'd emigrate to Southern Ireland and surrender my American citizenship, pronto. I'm a 14th generation American and always felt love for my country. The latest developments from Obama's huge "sell out" and Congress/Senate rolling over and playing dead giving Lame Duck Bush everything he wants in the last few weeks of his tenure make me want to puke. Hundreds of laws protecting workers, the environment, women's reproductive rights have been abolished with the stroke of Bush's pen and compicity from fuckwits in Congress/Senate in the last few weeks of December.

There is a DOJ probe that has been going on for the past 3 weeks concerning the Siegelman case.

I searched google news for "Siegelman" and there were 101 news stories during the past month (about 20 weren't even related to the gov's case), this lack of media attention involving our President's "brain" and a state governor is a telling sign that we are already living in a fascist country. Most of the 80 stories were from blogs and not mainstream media.

I also searched "Caylee" and over 7,000 news articles showed up for the same period. I'm really sorry that the child was killed, but what does this say about our media?

It also makes me wonder about whether Blagojevich (64,000+ news stories) is being framed by the media.

Anyone interested in a class action lawsuit against ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and FOX for selling us a war based on lies? The suit would be in behalf of our children's and grandchildren's future tax burden. The suit would ask that these corporations pay for the war that they sold to the American people.

We won't fix any of the real problems in the country as long as our media is cooperating with the current Republicans.

... it was inevitable. Only one liberal voice was raised in protest when LaRouche was railroaded in the Alexandria, VA "rocket docket" after his "mistrial" in Boston. (That of former Federal US Atty Gen. Ramsey Clark.) The "mistrial" in Boston was declared at the behest of the Federal DA in Boston when it became clear that they were losing. Thereafter, DOJ "docket shopped" the case to the Federal District of Northern Virginia where they found a jury more amenable to their mischief. Federal prosecutors went to LaRouche, just like they did to Scrushy with offers of a deal. No concern whatever for the facts or for justice. DOJ are nothing but a band of thugs operating under the color of "law enforcement." Like Scrushy, LaRouche said "no deal," even though he had been warned, "the fix is in." By sitting on their hands, since LaRouche was not one of them, the Liberals have conceded by default that politically motivated prosecution is "fair game." On another note, one possible means of driving a wedge between the neo-cons and that portion of their base among evangelicals might be to blow the lid off their sexual prostitution blackmail cabal. Attacking on this "flank" could provide the opening for breaking the power of the neo-cons, at least for now. It is already an open secret that Rove hates the evangelicals and holds them in utter contempt. If it turned out that Rove is a boy lover (ojala!!!) that might stand to reason. If the allegations in this thread about sexual misconduct were proven, many people now in power might find themselves mopping prison floors, at least until someone in the joint slides a shiv between their ribs. Child molesters generally do not manage to live out their sentences.

to the Karl Rove problem is, well... use your imagination. Shakespeare wrote a line in Antony and Cleopatra, Ceasar says, when finding out that Antony is dead, "We lance diseases from our body, don't we ?" Karl Rove is a disease on the world body politic.

In ancient Egypt. Soemtimes people were so mad at the late Pharoh that they would take a chisel to all his mouments in order to wipe out all traces of his existence.

If Rove, Bush, Chaney and friend manage to get away with what they've done. The deserve the same treatment. Future generations of hackers should make make virused that will destroy all digital documents that include there names! vandals should attack their graves and chisel away their names! The libraries should be broken into and all the documents burned!

Since Ken Lay has already gotten away with it, we should start with him.

There was a HUGE public outcry when Nixon and his henchmen perverted the laws of this country. What they did pales in comparison to what the Rove gang is doing-and most of it doesn't even make it into the news. The only thing these thugs learned from Watergate was how to cover their tracks better(and they're not even bothering to do much of that anymore-such is their belief in their own untouchability)-and to control public opinion by controlling the media. Google SourceWatch-Echo Chamber for an eye-opening look at how Republicans have been manipulating the media-and public opinion-for years. It certainly gives the lie to the so-called "liberal press".

This is a striking example of the behavior that contributes to my certainty that the US is just about finished. This is the culmination of the "Reagan Revolution", a movement by which the public is slowly introduced to the fact that the Constitution is no longer relevant, while a comparative handful of the rich and powerful turn We the People into a Third World/no rights/no civil liberties workforce whose sole function is to serve the greater interests of the elite. By now, 29 years after Reagan took power, we have grown so accustomed to our country's disregard for law and human rights that we no longer protest. We grumble, then accept. Back in the early '70's, I would have thought you were crazy if you said that Americans would learn to accept -- even embrace -- a dictatorship.
I would have been wrong.

No, there won't be a progressive revolution.
Maybe enough people haven't suffered enough yet, or maybe this generation just doesn't have what it takes to stand up against "authority". Regardless, precious few are standing up at all.

When things get bad enough for enough people, voila, we are given a Democratic president to ensure that we are pacified. That Democratic president, unfortunately, maintains the same core agenda, is discredited (doesn't matter why -- the media will spend years droning on about some suspicion or allegation) and a Republican is returned to the Oval Office. We've been going around and around in this same circle for some 30 years now, and the rut that we're marching in is getting mighty deep.
