A Response to the Extreme Anti-Gay Comments by My Brother, Newt Gingrich
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Civil Liberties headlines via email.
Note: This letter to Newt Gingrich from his sister is prompted by his outrageous statement on Nov. 14 to Fox News's Bill O' Reilly: "I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion."
Dear Newt,
I recently had the displeasure of watching you bash the protesters of the Prop 8 marriage ban to Bill O'Reilly on FOX News. I must say, after years of watching you build your career by stirring up the fears and prejudices of the far right, I feel compelled to use the words of your idol, Ronald Reagan, "There you go, again."
However, I realize that you may have been a little preoccupied lately with planning your resurrection as the savior of your party, so I thought I would fill you in on a few important developments you might have overlooked.
The truth is that you're living in a world that no longer exists. I, along with millions of Americans, clearly see the world the way it as -- and we embrace what it can be. You, on the other hand, seem incapable of looking for new ideas or moving beyond what worked in the past.
Welcome to the 21st century, big bro. I can understand why you're so afraid of the energy that has been unleashed after gay and lesbian couples had their rights stripped away from them by a hateful campaign. I can see why you're sounding the alarm against the activists who use all the latest tech tools to build these rallies from the ground up in cities across the country.
This unstoppable progress has at its core a group we at <a href="http://www.hrc.org/">Human Rights Campaign call Generation Equality</a>. They are the most supportive of full LGBT equality than any American generation ever -- and when it comes to the politics of division, well, they don't roll that way. 18-24 year olds voted overwhelmingly against Prop 8 and overwhelmingly for Barack Obama. And the numbers of young progressive voters will only continue to grow. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning, about 23 million 18-29 year olds voted on Nov. 4, 2008 -- the most young voters ever to cast a ballot in a presidential election. That's an increase of 3 million more voters compared to 2004.
These are the same people who helped elect Barack Obama and sent a decisive message to your party. These young people are the future and their energy will continue to drive our country forward. Even older Americans are turning their backs on the politics of fear and demagoguery that you and your cronies have perfected over the years.
This is a movement of the people that you most fear. It's a movement of progress -- and your words on FOX News only show how truly desperate you are to maintain control of a world that is changing before your very eyes.
Then again, we've seen these tactics before. We know how much the right likes to play political and cultural hardball, and then turn around and accuse us of lashing out first. You give a pass to a religious group -- one that looks down upon minorities and women -- when they use their money and membership roles to roll back the rights of others, and then you label us "fascists" when we fight back. You belittle the relationships of gay and lesbian couples, and yet somehow neglect to explain who anointed you the protector of "traditional" marriage. And, of course, you've also mastered taking the foolish actions of a few people and then indicting an entire population based on those mistakes. I fail to see how any of these patterns coincide with the values of "historic Christianity" you claim to champion.
Again, nothing new here. This is just more of the blatant hypocrisy we're used to hearing.
What really worries me is that you are always willing to use LGBT Americans as political weapons to further your ambitions. That's really so '90s, Newt. In this day and age, it's embarrassing to watch you talk like that. You should be more afraid of the new political climate in America, because, there is no place for you in it.

I look forward to the rise of Gay Fascism in the US. The uniforms will look fabulous, and the choreography will put those Nazi goose-steppers to shame.
There's a new show in town, Newt; deal with it. One of the first things to go will be that hideous haircut. What part of the 70s were you thinking of, girl?

The right is so intellectually, ethically, ideologically and increasingly politically and financially bankrupt that it's trotting out the same old tired whipping boys trying to scare up some votes. It's pathetic, and while it may work in red states, it's not going to propel them back to power.

Puts me in mind of,
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." --C.S. Lewis

To me is seems the RELIGIOUS fascism of the Falwells and Robertstons and Reids fall into this better than anyone who is GLBT. Honestly, Newt and his kind ought to move to Iran or North Korea.
They'd be really at home there with their own kind.

Newt, O'Reilly, Hannity, Pat Buchanan and the like are very much holdovers from the past where they could get away with their hate agenda. Now with the Internet and the very real changes in our society and the world they are under daily scrutiny. Their words can be examined for the hate that they contain.
Theo-Fascism today is actually far more about economics than it is about theocracy. But theocracy is used as a kind of cover for them to say whatever they want and then hide behind a mantle of theocracy.
The USA and the world is truly changing. Their agenda of hate and hypocrisy will someday engulf them in defeat because people are now tiring of it. Unless they change they are doomed to even more defeat than they have seen in this past election.
The Republican party will go in either of two directions. It will get more mainstream and far less radical or it will get increasingly desperate and do even more of what it has long been associated with, extremism. If it goes more extreme we can expect to see them offering up for our votes, the egregiously Theo-Fascist candidates: Sarah Palin(Pentecostal) and Jeb Bush(Catholic). At that time either they or we will be in deep trouble, depending on which political party the American people choose to elect.
So it seems safe to say that the election of 2012 will signal the next 'decision point' of the American people as to which direction they/we have chosen to go.
I'm betting the Republican party will go even more radical because stupidity anti-intellectualism and ignorance seems to reign supreme with them, and the American people will once again choose to reject them, their hate and their extremism. You just cannot fool all of the people all of the time.
Their luck, their fear mongering and their hate mongering will then dry up and blow away like the dead leaves of Autumn before the cold winter winds of rejection which hopefully will bring our nation to a new Spring of blooming and growth; the growth of new directions and new thought.

America just voted for a man who's against gay marriage.
Many of these new voters are also against gay marriage, and are not as progressive as you think.
Just thought I'd drop you a note.

The religious right has consistently promoted into public office those very people whose actions and lifestyles you condemn, flaming hypocrits. They seldom actually live the lives they pretend to hold so dear, they simply praise them to provide themselves rhetorical cover. Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay, Dennis Hastert, Bil Bennett, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Rudy Giuliani and on and on and on.....
You want to save the country? Stop electing these phonies.

My response was, :
"Why?"
Aide, "He saw you and told me he wanted to offer you a ride."
"No thanks," said I. and walked away to get my bags.
I was then, and remain a perfect stranger to Mr.Gingrich. He was trying at that time to pick me up, not "offer me a ride," using his seat in congress as a lure. What he didn't know, was that I was a resident of his home state and VERY familiar with his antics with women other than his two wives, one of whom was his mistress while his first wife was undergoing treatment for cancer.
I would also throw in that he was no friend of senior citizens in our state as he would often send seniors with questions about Medicare and Social Security to a friend of his who reaped pay for "helping" said seniors, rather than referring them to agencies that do the same work for free. I knew of this first hand, having a very good friend who worked in the same place as I. She returned from one of his public neighborhood meetings completely aghast from covering this event for the paper we worked for, and described to me and our fellow workers what he had been doing. But that's an aside.
When it comes to religion, Newt's ONLY religion is as far from Christianity as one can get. He is all about greed, power and lust. He has never changed his stripes, he's still the backwater slimy cretin he always was, and to thrust himself time and again into the public face as a bastion of moral example is sickening.
As far as I am concerned, Mr. Gingrich's mother had a vision when she named him Newt. A small, slimy dweller of wet rocks and dark, dank places. It is a name that suits him to a "T."

Seen it all before. It was called the 60's.
And what happened?
The young and idealistic get older, marry, have children, leave the cities and become pragmatic.
Safety and security become priorities.
Is this what will happen?
Not sayin' yes, not sayin' no, just sayin' mebbee.
And the passage of prop8?
The gay conformists (we're just like you, please like us and grant us our rights) may need to rethink their tactics, not abandon them, but broaden them. Protesting outside mormon temples is a great start.
Evolution is a very slow process.
Still the politics of hope are way more appealing then the politics of fear.
Guess i'm skeptical AND optimistic.

What the GOP has hopefully proven is not just their intolerance of everyone else, their corrupt pay to play games, their hypocrisy of the very bible they thump on, but that in their own way, they are much closer to the dictatorial mullahs that they rant against. These people don't see reality they see backwards and want people to go back to "Father knows best" days! Get over yourselves, this is the 21st century!

When Nations Die - the comment regarding the decline of nations over the millenia - religion and tribalism/nationalism are so closely tied as for this idea to be really suspect, it's really the tribalism part. Religion really IS tribalism/nationalism, with spooky ghosts thrown to make sure you obey or your soul is in peril. The "religion" of modern day America is the philosophy of secular humanism, the great ideas upon which our nation was founded, freedom FROM religion, free speech, individual liberties, pursuit of happiness, etc. This "religion" got its start at the end of the Renaissance, with the ideas of the rights of man. Our founding fathers were radicals. They were secular humanists, this was crazy stuff when it happened, we are just so used to the ideas now that we don't really recall how way out there it was. Note that Thomas Jefferson rewrote the Christian Bible to take out all references to the supernatural. It was also Jefferson's Koran the representative Ellison was sworn into office with, BTW, these folks were not the bastion of the supposed Judeo-Christian past so many people wax over. This national was not founded on Judeo-Christian principals no matter how much the right wing echo chamber says so. As for the ten commandments and religion in the public square, you should note that this was not common in the past, people didn't insist on using the public square to display religious paraphernalia until more recent time. The "In God we Trust" was not on our money until the 50's McCarthy witch hunts.
As for Obama not supporting gay marriage, I think he knew it would be the wedge issue that Republicans needed to win an election, because their policies in general are so unpalatable, it was just a smart move on his part.

With its Treason fomenting Iran-Contra weapons for cocaine scandle. If the Felons of the Reagan administration had been behind bars, then there would be no self-appointed Bu$h II Executive in Washington today wrecking such chaos and mayhem upon the USA and the world at large.
Senile Ronnie fondly referred to Saddam Hussein and Osma Bin laden as "Freedom Fighter's", the GOP "Greed & Oppression Party" no have re-labeled "Terrorist's".
Culminating in the never-ending farce War Of Terror, based off of lies and deceit, costing Trillions of $'s with billions unaccounted for and millions of lives of innocent killed.
How the GOP pontificates about less government and federal spending while in reality they bloat the size of government and its run-a-way deficit spending that your great-grandchildren of "Loved Ones" will still only be paying a fraction of the interest of the total accrued debt. So much for the idea that "Deficits Don't Matter".
The championing of deregulation by the Reagan regime fostered the S & L scandle and the multitude of other financial fiascoes that have the current 700+ billion $ "Financial Wizards" with golden parachutes instead of prison. While they claim the "Free Market" is not to blame.
Log Cabin Republicans should now open their eyes to see that there is no place for them in the GOP and never was one in the first place. While they engage in the Henry Hyde "Youthful Indirections", Foley "Follies", and Craig bathroom perverted escapades.
Such is the mind of these cretins and the cum of doublespeak that is spat out of their mouths.

I have not been altogether thrilled by the gay relationships that I have seen, but it just seems like the same thing so many heterosexuals have been going thru for years. Anyone who considers cheating on their partner, then whines and bitches about their relationship, well, what did they expect? Karma's gonna get you one way or another, you can take it (karma) now, or you can have it later.
It's kinda like buyin' plastic junk at walmart and then bitchin when the landfill moves next door to you. We can all dance with glee about Newt getting 'what's comin' to him,' or we can look at our own interactions with those around us, and try to clean them up, one act at a time. If we don't do it, it won't get done!

Lewis

"I think there is a RELIGIOUS FASCISM in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion."
