Is 'Bitch' the New Black?

By Ellen Snortland, AlterNet. Posted March 6, 2008.

"Bitch" is a wonderful word and state of being. I want to be one. And I double-bitch dare you to join me.

As host of Saturday Night Live, comedian and writer Tina Fey issued a clarion call for women to be proud bitches during her "Women's News" segment on Feb. 23, 2008. Fey unabashedly supported Hillary's bitch-in-chief status. To view "Bitch Is the New Black," go to: http://tinyurl.com/2y7hzq. Here is Ellen Snortland's own bitch challenge.

Bitch is a noun and a verb; simply add a "y" and you've got an adjective. What a bitch of a word! Who wouldn't want to be a bitching, bitchy bitch? Sign me up. I double-bitch dare you to join me.

Be a bitch, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. It's a good thing, nothing to be ashamed or scared of. I've wasted way too much of my life attempting to prove I'm not a bitch. I have been nice when a saint would have lost it. I have been unduly proud when people said I'm not a bitch but another woman is. I have called other women bitches in a disempowering way. Im truly sorry for the way I've abused the word. I would like to see the word "bitch" elevated to its proper place in the English language, transformed from sexist epithet to a word of adoration and awe.

Bitch is actually a wonderful word and state of being. Just as a stud is a potent and valuable male, bitch is the ripe female equivalent in the dog kingdom, er, queendom. As we all know, its human use is usually derogatory because it is a word mostly used in reference to strong women.

Strength is a relative term. A man called me a bitch when I politely declined to let him cut in front of me in a grocery line. I suddenly understood the absurdity of trying to maintain a nonbitch stance in the world. No matter what, someone will think I am one, so what the hell -- I might as well enjoy the perks of being an actual bitch.

"Bitch" is used as a verbal weapon, a way to keep "uppity" women in line or to keep women who are thinking about being uppity from opening their mouths. "You wouldn't want anyone to think you're a bitch, now would you? Better not say anything," is how some of the logic goes. OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH, how scary to be called a bitch. Isn't it amazing that so many of us have given the word so much power?

To call someone a bitch as a put-down is to presume there are bitches in the world and there are "non-bitches"; that the proper way to be a female human being is to be a nonbitch.

What is a nonbitch? She is like the unicorn, a myth, a fantasy dreamt up by people with mother issues. A nonbitch is a woman who personifies compliant beauty, who never gives a fella any trouble. She is always nice and understanding, never angry, doesn't argue, doesn't protect herself, her property or her children. She is always complimentary, remembers every detail about everything, never hurts feelings intentionally or unintentionally, always serves others first, always smiles and does what everyone asks of her, all the time, with no complaint. I'm sure I've left something out, but since I'm a bitch, I don't pretend that I don't make mistakes.

The old-fashioned, put-down usage of bitch is like a girdle; it holds women back and in, and in a most uncomfortable and unhealthy way. No one really wants to be stuffed or squeezed into anything, whether it's an undergarment or an archaic form of so-called feminine behavior. Everyone despised girdles, but it wasn't until a few courageous women started refusing to wear them that the rest of us could wiggle out of them forever.

I hereby proudly declare my bitchness and invite others to do the same. Join me. Everyone in the world has bitchness in them, women and men, girls and boys. Why would we collude in the absurd idea of aspiring to not be something that we all are? There are things to complain about, there are things to be angry about, there are domestic and global problems to take action on that require the bitch in all of us.

The more who proclaim, nay, celebrate their bitchness, the less bitchy we'll all seem and the bitchier we can all become. If you don't like that idea, take a hike because I don't care. I have better things to worry about. Ahh, that felt good -- just like taking off a girdle after a long day. Try it.

Old habits die hard. I admit I still flinch if someone calls me a bitch. But I must remember to be proud that I am no longer invisible, and therefore pleasing to everyone and anyone. And I think of my favorite real-life bitch, my dog and companion. Now there's a role model.

She's faithful, loving, valuable, warm, nurturing, intelligent, affectionate and capable of ripping someone who attacks me or my loved ones to ribbons. She's a bitch and, except for the way she drools and sheds, I want to be just like her.

"Isn't it amazing that so many of us have given the word so much power?"

This is like when black people try and say that its ok to call each other "nigga". No people!

As a black woman, I'm neither a "B" or a "Nigga". As much as you try, you can't take power from these words. Because words convey meaning, thats why we talk and communicate with them. This particular word has been designated to mean bad things--because that's how we learned it. So unless every English speaker in the world who knows this words simultaneously agrees to free its meaning, I'm not sure how your theory works.

"What is a nonbitch? She is like the unicorn, a myth, a fantasy dreamt up by people with mother issues. A nonbitch is a woman who personifies compliant beauty, who never gives a fella any trouble. Obviously this is in the world of people who use swear words. I know many, many people (including myself) who don't cuss and would simply search for another word. So are we debating semantics, and the actions of these people, or the actual word itself?

Not all liberals feel the need to use such descriptors in the first place.

The mutilation of language
Posted by: aouie01 on Mar 6, 2008 12:51 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Slang terms are not readily understood by those who learn a language. Neither are variant idioms, slogans, etc. Modifying a language to fit the preferred communications needs of an individual or society or culture or sub-culture is not wrong in and of itself. But, some value should be given to not losing the usefulness of language in communicating with others who know the language. The more deviant the language becomes, the more the practitioners of the deviant language will find it difficult to communicate (or simply lose interest in communicating) with those who speak the unadulterated language.

Anti-communicative language (which may be the intent of at least some of the usage) is undesirable for furthering a communication oriented culture. It is much easier to discuss the finer points of a movie that a friend described as "an unappealing movie that was too slow moving and boring" than one described as "the shitty movie by the fucking lame-ass director". (... You can come up with other examples as an exercise...)

While some would prefer to use slang with anybody, those who don't use it with children whose guardians don't mind it, should think about why they would choose to not use slang with children .

While many prefer to engage in slang due to a repulsion towards pressure to conform with supposed appropriate or civilized communication (or a sense of camaraderie) , try not to lose sight of the other downsides. There are ways to fight the pressure without mutilating language (though camaraderie will be more difficult with some people and sub-cultures).

It is also worth pointing out that in addition to mutilation of a language, we should also try to use language that enhances us in ways that is more beneficial than not. It may not be long before slang terms are no longer considered slang. In the previous paragraph most would not mind my having substituted "prudish" or "snobbish" in place of "supposed appropriate or civilized", but it will be easier for someone who believes in sticking to "supposed appropriate or civilized" communications to discuss the issue than if anti-communicative language like "prudish" or "snobbish" were used. Slang terms often fall under the anti-communicative category (though as I mentioned that is sometimes the intent).

Sincerely,
Aouie

Escaping the reaping of bad sowing
Posted by: aouie01 on Mar 6, 2008 1:17 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In smaller towns, it is much more common to reap what is sown. In bigger cities, there are many situations where based on certain value systems of (unfortunately) many individuals, more can be gained through malicious, unpleasant, selfish (i.e. "bitchy") interactions than through considerate and polite interactions. Goodness and badness tends to linger on. Keeping oneself in more and more goodness is beneficial for those who value goodness. Also, there is a risk of running into someone who hyper-reacts to unpleasantness, and that could result in malicious, unpleasant, selfish individuals unexpectedly reaping what they sow.
Even if on the average people in big cities escape the reaping of bad sowing most of the time, try not to promote it too much, as the more the badness that is sown, the more likely you are to be the recipient of someone else's bad sowing.
Sincerely,
Aouie

which kind of bitch are you?

Ms. Snortland,
You say you refused to allow someone, who asked (you should try living in China where people don't ask they just push) to step ahead of you in line (I usually offer, when I see someone has far fewer items than I). He called you a bitch. My guess is, he meant the "old" kind of bitch and I would venture to guess he was correct.
Further, since you seem to find such delight in being referred to as a bitch, referencing the canine origins of the word, how do you feel about being called a DOG?

What?
Posted by: talkville on Mar 6, 2008 3:37 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
A hypothesis: each and every word of any language, spoken or 'dead', can be said to be 'wonder-full' -- they carry charges, positive and negative, and emanate in all different directions - dazzling even sometimes, carrying Sense, Force, Power. They can cause a Tingle or a Shock. They can Fascinate and make one Mute. They can Whisper, they can Call, they can Shout, they can Yell. They can Soothe and, yes, they can Hurt-- all this and more despite intention, direction, motive. They are acts, and acts are all there is for living, human organisms.

Seems we've gone Post-Modern though, and 'all is text' as Derrida might quip. Words such as 'bitch' and 'stud' have risen above context to just be words! And thus Who Says is Who Is (in a self-referential expression of description such as "I am a bitch"; "I am a stud". So be it, Amen!.

But how is the Other to understand that: is it any different that saying "I am a Door" or "I am a Window"?

There are Relations between the One and the Other (and nothing wrong with 'taking someone as they ARE).

But Words, in context or (mystically) outside of it, relate -- they are not absolutes. And both the words 'bitch' and 'stud' refer to the animality of the human species. So far, so ok. All I can say, is that I can only hope that bitches and studs are developing into more human ways of being as distinguished from congealing into States of Be-ing.

As in all things, the article points to what may be good at some times or bad at others. It just depends on conditions and contexts. It still leaves us with the same conundrum; in these conditions, what is the bitch or the stud or the window or the door or the man or the woman or the nerd or the jock or the soldier or the merchant or any particular person DOING?

THAT would be valuable to understand.

How about "adult?"

I agree that we women are called "bitch" whether we deserve it or not, but I'm sure every person alive could testify to a similar experience with some insulting name or other.
The idea of "I'm getting accused of it, so I might as well do it" is a phenomenon well known to anyone who has a close association with teenagers, but I'm 45 years old and it seems to me that the biggest part of the problem is knowing how to present myself based on my self-image, instead of letting other people control me.

Yes, I still go through a struggle, knowing that sometimes I'm still the "nice girl" when I shouldn't be, and knowing that at other times I go too far in the other direction. Maybe I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying to work out this balance. Maybe everybody does, men too - remember that Joe Jackson song "Real Men" asking some simlar questions.

At heart, I want to be the kind of person who doesn't have to reach past what I need to in order to protect and justify myself or loved ones. I want to be one of those calm, loving, non-angry people who can go about enjoying life and being friendly to everyone unless some need comes up calling for action. You know, the "laid back" boss, for example, who trusts you and only steps in when trust is abused. I think this is hard for women - I think it's true that people are more likely to see this as weakness in a woman than a man, but I want to behave as if this isn't the case.

So, I'm not going to be proud of "bitch," but I am still going to try not to be weak.

Bitches as Roll Models
Posted by: mnascimento on Mar 6, 2008 4:24 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We expect, sometimes demand that athletes provide roll models for our young people.

Congress recently humiliated Roger Clemmons all day, on three major news channels, then demanded an FBI investigation for perjury. He, Barry Bonds, Marrian Jones, and others have been thoroughly disgraced.

A lesson for the young. Be a good sport, don't use unfair advantage, etc., etc.

Politicians, seem to get a free pass for far more egregious violations of ethics and law. Bush, Cheney, and others too numerous to count violate our basic sensibilities and prosper.

We now have the first female candidate for president to gain serious traction with the public. We recognize that she is a bitch. The article and commentary confirm that perception.

She is also a roll model for the young, and for other women hoping to break through the glass ceiling.

She is running against a candidate who tries to take the high road, by not slinging mud and sticking to the issues. Heaven knows, she is an easy target, if he chose to sling mud.

Rather than condemn her behavior as undesirable, we strain to make it cool and hip. "Bitch Power!" Be a bitch, young ones if you want to get ahead.

Assertiveness with class, is still my ideal, and a much better example to set. Imagine a country where bitch is the norm.

As women do we now have to accept this term as a compliment? I am not comfortable with it and I don't think it should be applied to any women. We should denounce it whenever it is used. We have the first woman running for president and she gets called a bitch. It is disgraceful.

I learned this acronym some years ago, and it does describe me pretty well. I don't go around calling myself any kind of epithet. Seriously, it is rude to give anyone a name they have not chosen for themselves. But if anyone ever does have the inclination to attack my self assured manner by calling me a bitch, I have a ready response. "That will be Mrs. Bitch to you!"

Do we really need another bitch as president?

Actually, the male equivalent of "bitch" is "prick" and we have had a prick in office now for 8 years. Do we really need another one as president, even a female one? No. It's time for a bridge-builder as president. A bitch or a prick is not a bridge builder. These people, male or female are basically divisive because they are so abrasive and aggressive in tone. I'm tired of people saying it's okay to be a bitch if you are a female, but it's not okay to be a prick if you are a male. That is a sexist notion. Being a jerk is being a jerk, regardless of which gender you happen to be. Look at Hillary now. She's using the same tactics as Bush did when running for office. Don't focus on what you are going to do, but focus on anything negative, true or untrue, about the other candidate. How about we just say she is a prick. That doesn't sounds so good, does it. do you want another prick for president?

Teh State of Bourgeois Feminism
Posted by: wbblack on Mar 6, 2008 5:47 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I remember having debates about bourgeois feminism in graduate school. I just couldn’t see how it would liberate woman and look what it has become. The idea that being a bitch is to be valorized is ludicrous. Bitch is not comparable to “nigger or nigga.” Bitch is a behavior. “Nigga” refers to what some one looks like, physical characteristics that have been unscientifically used to categorize us into races. There is no genetic evidence to prove the existence of different races of human beings on the planet earth. A strong woman is not a bitch.

A strong woman/person embodies the essential “feminine” traits of compassion and nurturing, a concern for the survival and the health and wellbeing of the group. The true meaning of strength comes when we understand that we must protect the young and the weak, even if this means putting our own individualists desires second.

The idea that women need to be strong bitches is actually valorizing the “masculine” behaviors of dominance and individualism, of the need to be “top dog” and of making decisions that are good for you despite how it may hurt others. This kind of behavior is rooted in instinct and fear. I’m a man, and I can tell you that too many men – most in fact -- buy into this behavior. It’s not strength. It’s weakness. I struggle against it everyday. If our species is to evolve to the next level, we need to begin to valorize the truly “feminine” archetypes. We need to learn to cooperate and to make sure that all of us have the things that we need to live a healthy life. Concern for all is the highest form of concern for the self. We have a long road a head of us and bitchiness is not the way to get there. It is the opposite direction of where we need to go. The person who wrote this piece is part of the problem, not the solution. It makes me sad that people consider this to be “progressive.”

the nigger of the world, stated by John Lennon, I will not put up with the word bitch. Bitch is usually the noun a woman hears before some man knocks the cold hell out of her. Any woman tolerant of this kind of of low-class male is teaching him that she doesn't like herself. Women who refer to each other as a bitch get what they deserve. We feminists can't save them all, but we'd better!

There was once a convent inhabited by a very strict order of nuns, like the Cistercian monks.
It was a strict order of silence. But there was just one day anyone was allowed to speak, and it was to the Mother Superior. So this particular lady met the Mother Superior on the alloted day and said, " Bad food".
The Mother Superior nodded her head and
the lady went back and carried on obediently until the next annual time of talking. This time she went to the Mother Superior and said, "Hard bed". The Mother Superior nodded her head and the lady went back to her cell for another year of obedience. The lady came back to the Mother Superior the third year and said, "No heat".
This time the Mother Superior said,
"All you do is bitch, bitch, bitch"

Words have the power that you give them. I've been called many things in my life, usually by a person who is attempting to shape my behavior. You can accept or not what other people call you or say about you. When someone calls someelse a bitch, I usually think that the namecaller person has issues and a limited vocabulary.

But it ain't gonna win against McCain. Bitch (Clinton) vs. Experience (McCain). Hmmm. Bitch vs War Hero. No sale there either.

I'd rather have good judgement (Obama) against old ideas (McCain). I'd rather have a new direction (Obama) against stay the same old disastrous course (McCain)

What an ugly word. What a stupid article. If this is what young women are aspiring to, I feel sorry for them. They've taken a big step backward by taking on a nasty moniker and a negative attitude. The downslide of American society is oh so evident here.

I'm always in favor or more words not less, especially words that are emotionally nuanced or hypercharged. Now if we can just get "fucker" into the mainstream...bwahahaha, says Dr. Evil.

The funny thing about the SNL thing was, it was funny as hell and spoke more about Fey and Poehler (in character of course) than it did about Hillary. I just don't see Hillary as a bitch as in a chick who gets things done. She's all about undoing everything I want done and preventing what I want from ever happening. In that sense Cynthia McKinney is more a bitch than Hillary.

Which of course is just a long way around saying that the title of this "article" was disappointing because I was expecting a swell accademic dissertation on the intersection of gender and race with language and cultural meaning. Of course this is the Alternets so I shoulda known better....

Our society is getting crazier. A rising gaggle of "bitches" is just what we need. Be reasonable morons, be reasonable.

This retrograde Americanism is destroying the whole world by making it acceptable for people to demean each other, and valorize all the wrong set of values. Rather than humility, compassion, and selflessness, this article argues we should valorize, arrogance, nastiness, and selfishness which is the actual definition of Bitch. It also means stepping on other people to get ahead, or just generally treating people like shit. Is that what we want more of in this society?

Bitch is a horrible word. It should not be owned, period.

What an awful word.

I checked Wikipedia, and they define "bitch" as "a term for the female of a canine species in general. It is also frequently used as an offensive term for a woman, taken to mean that she is malicious, spiteful, domineering, intrusive, or unpleasant. This second meaning has been in use since around 1400."

That seems like a valid definition.

On another note, I visited Russia a few years ago on business and was talking to a Russian gentleman who spoke very good English. When the subject of American women was brought up (by him), he would not use the "b" word, however, he did tell the following joke:

"What is heaven?

A Ukrainian wife, Chinese food, an English house, and an American salary.

What is hell?

An American wife, English food, a Chinese house, and a Ukrainian salary
."

Now, I will admit that I chuckled at the joke, but I've always wondered how this negative perception of American women made its way to such a far-away culture.

My Russian friend told me that this perception is common in Europe (East and West) and Russia (and a few other counties, which I don't recall now).

Nevertheless, I'm still puzzled by this negative perception of American women.

If Bitch Is The New Black

will untold numbers of White women face the possibility of public hangings for looking at Black men the "wrong" way? Probably not. In my world bitch is the new chicken head. And Tina Fey is the top chicken head. What in history could make Tina believe that all women have a shared experience with Blacks? Would it have been remotely funny if an Obama supporter had said Black is the new bitch? That probably would have done real damage to his campaign, which is another indication that bitch really isn't the new black!

Dear Trend. Why do you believe Hillary isn't a bridge-builder? She's been building bridges that other people have crossed over for years. Check her out in Wikipedia or do your homework. What's interesting is she's been derided for years in order to nullify her and if someone really looks at her history en toto, it's pretty amazing. I bought into the current myth originally. Obama is sweet and cuddly. Hillary is whips and tongs. That image has been fostered by a media that is scared shitless of a woman who didn't fall into a neat category. So literally what has she done that's so strange in politics. obama derides her continually, but in a silky manner. I love his charm and general philosophies, but hey!, for every charge leveled against her the converse is true. That's what's pissing some people off. If the media is predominantly staus-quo, why are they falling all over Obama and trashing her. What trashes someone is the slant, the light they're shown in. Michelle Obama just resigned in the last few years as director of TreeHouse Foods whose main customer is Wal-Mart. I can forgive that. We live in a complex world. However when Hillary get's the Wal-mart label, having left that area decades ago, it's interesting that she gets the slam. Hillary does work across the aisle. Check her record. Why is she so branded? If you have an easy answer then you may be a pawn of media manipulation and not realize it? I ask you one thing, after reading up on her, fairly giving it the time of day, ask yourself why she is being so incredibly slammed, other than her Iraq vote which was a fiasco and which she has said she would take back. I was for Kucinich but began to look into her record out of pure curiosity because she was getting the royal dis treatment. It's interesting that she's the bitch when so many people with complete self-righteous impunity are trashing her. I saw a funny quote in a Charleston newspaper. It was a woman on the street interview. She said, 'Hell, if Hillary was walking on water, they'd say, Hey, Look, she can't swim." Good luck checking things out.

As long as we're mulling over these finer (ha) points of terminology, why is it that any AlterNet article that focuses on women is labeled "Reproductive Justice"?

Do men not reproduce? Do only women reproduce?

I don't see anywhere here that this bitch is reproducing!
