Right-Wing Militias Are Resurging -- Will They Produce More Terrorists Like Timothy McVeigh?

After a decade out of the spotlight, the militant rightwing “Patriot” movement is on the rise.

We need to beware of the right-wing militia movement in America. It poses a danger to our democracy. And shamefully, it is fueled by a few mainstream politicians and media personalities.

After a decade out of the spotlight, the militant rightwing “Patriot” movement — which was responsible for such murderous terrorist acts as the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that claimed 168 lives and injured 500 — is on the rise.

And according to a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center, this violent coalition of groups is united in their hatred of the government, and of the first black president.

The newly minted report, “The Second Wave: Return of the Militias,” warns that authorities are worried about the acceleration in violent acts by radical right groups.

“Militiamen, white supremacists, anti-Semites, nativists, tax protesters and a range of other activists of the radical right are cross-pollinating and may even be coalescing,” says the report. “This is the most significant growth we’ve seen in 10 to 12 years,” according to one source in the report. “All it’s lacking is a spark. I think it’s only a matter of time before you see threats and violence.”

As many as 50 new militia training groups have formed in two years. Shockingly, one of the groups, the Oath Keepers, consists of current and ex-soldiers and police officers. Its members are concerned about a coming dictatorship, concentration camps and a “New World Order.” And they regard President Obama as “an enemy of the state.”

Meanwhile, sales of guns and ammunition have increased over fears of gun control laws.

The Southern Poverty Law Center notes that in recent months, men with pro-militia, racist, anti-government or anti-Semitic sentiments have committed acts of murder — including the murder of six police officers since April. And a majority of the killers and conspirators were at least partially motivated by the election of Obama.

It’s astonishing that mainstream politicians and media outlets have stoked the fires of militia extremism. This is both irresponsible and dangerous, and will only lead to acts of violence. They have legitimized the hateful and racist propaganda of the Patriot groups, including the outrageous claim that the president is not a U.S. citizen, and that he presides over a fascist-socialist government.

Glenn Beck of Fox News has called Obama a Marxist and a racist who hates white people. And he has linked the Obama administration with fascism. CNN’s Lou Dobbs has opened the door for questioning Obama’s citizenship, and has legitimized the conspiracy theories about Latinos wanting to conquer the Southwest.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., suggested that the president was planning reeducation camps for young people. Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., channeling Joe McCarthy, warned that there are 17 “socialists” in Congress. And Texas Gov. Rick Perry echoed militia talk when he suggested Texas secede from the Union.

These militia sentiments were on full display at the anti-tax tea party protests, and they have continued at the health care town hall meetings, along with death threats against members of Congress. Some protestors have come to presidential events strapped with pistols and armed with semiautomatic assault rifles, creating conditions that are ripe for violence.

We can’t ignore the threat of homegrown domestic terrorism. The far right militia groups are profoundly undemocratic. We underestimate them at our peril.

In 1995, during the last surge of right-wing extremism, the internet was only used by a small number of geeks. Now it is accessable to anybody and is being used by right-wingers much like it is used by international terrorists like al-Queda. With few regulations, extremeists are able to create websites and forum boards, it is being used to attract more to their preverse causes, unite them, spread rumors and twisted thoughts as well as communicate with each other in seconds when it would have taken weeks or months. No longer do you need a place in the deep woods to meet, you just do in on the internet. Worse, it is nearly impossible to prevent misuse of the internet due to it's international nature, the ability to be hidden behind a screen name and our First Amendment rights. It is clear that the internet, ironically developed initially to help military communications is now being twisted to be used by the new enemies of the state and people.

about right-wing violence. It's scary, even though many more people will die from heart disease and stroke (over 500,000/year each) and accidents (over 100,000/year), and even though the Islamic terrorists seem to be better at killing people (an order of magnitude more American victims in recent history), and more mundane, one-at-a-time sorts of murderers kill more Americans than terrorists of any kind (thousands of murders per year).

Seriously, though, why are you picking on the Oath Keepers? Because they're concerned about a coming dictatorship that might not ever exist? What do they do that is actually wrong by saying they won't put Americans into camps or whatever? And don't tell me nobody on the left believes in conspiracy theories.

Also, why pick on the millions of Americans who are buying more guns in response to the threat of gun control, for which many members of the current administration have voiced their support? Most legal gun owners never harm anybody with their guns.

Obama almost certainly is a citizen, though he could shut most of the "birthers" up very quickly if he allowed the release of his birth certificate. Truthfully, though, I care about his policies more than his citizenship.

Finally, "semiautomatic assault rifle" is an oxymoron, as the commonly-accepted definition requires that an assault rifle be capable of fully-automatic fire. Also, "semiautomatic assault weapon" is a political term manufactured to justify banning weapons that look like actual assault rifles, or that just look scary to some people.

Not a word here about ELF, Earth First, PETA, or the other "environmental" groups committing arson, bombings and murder. These groups are actually doing it, but if a patriot talks about potential violence, its a problem. I see the same double standard here as on the equally offensive right-wing editorial pages. The politics of a dictator make little difference to the average subject. Mao or Hitler, the view from the street is the same. Obama would be just as evil a dictator as Bush and it is our duty as citizens to keep our government weak enough to be controlled by us and not allow ourselves to be controlled by it. Fearmongering should not be encouraged here any more than on the right.

and playing go-along-get-along with the Republicans under the "centrist" disguise. The guns and ammo sales are already rising because more people from all sides are getting fed up with government for selling out and being totally dishonest with the American people. Much as I support reasonable gun control, I don't blame the people for wanting to buy their guns and ammo given our government selling us out when they had the golden opportunity to actually change things for the better. How much will we continue to borrow from China until China flips the FORECLOSURE SWITCH ?

Gee. I don't suppose that could be because the Bush League managed to release almost every right-wing domestic terrorist convicted during the Clinton administration while they were in office. They kept the most famous ones in to keep up appearances. Now there all out and up to their dirty deeds again, while 'tree spikers' rot in jail. I hate this double standard.

I could foresee this coming back in the late eighties, after interviewing a skin head. I could see that we would have a situation with domestic terrorism coming from this type of person. Now after watching this evolution unfold, in how the Right has wrapped their politics in a package of fanatic Christianity. We better do something now before it is too late. I'm especially concerned about armies like Black water, which are owned and managed by a Christian fanatic, which has essentially recruited or converted most all their soldiers to this cult of fanatic Christian soldiers interested in Killing in the name of Jesus, Creating their own Crusade against Islam the non believers. We better get these talking heads off the air before we end up with these nut cases taking over our government. As if eight years with Bush wasn't bad enough, these right wing nut cases could do so real damage.

A country

can't play one game outside its borders and expect something totally different to take place nationally. A militaristic culture which the US definitely is, gives rise to the belief that the way to settle differences is by way of violence. Why is anyone surprised that after decades of spreading death and destruction from one side of the world to the other without a second of regret, the same tactics are starting to evidence themselves inside the country? This article says it all when it counts former soldiers in the right wing patriots. These are trained killers, trained by the American military. The only problem is they have now set their (gun)sights on domestic targets instead of foreign ones. Nothing is more true than the biblical prophecy that "those who live by the sword will die by the sword". You are the author of your own demise!

The government produced Timothy McVeigh
Posted by: jonodavidson on Aug 25, 2009 5:29 PM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Timothy McVeigh blew up the federal building at Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. The Waco massacre occurred on April 19,1994. McVeigh retalliated against the government attack upon a church using soldiers and tanks in which they killed 68 people and burned the compound down to the ground in a matter of minutes. The government accused David Khoresh of killing everybody before committing suicide. Anyone who saw the live footage at the time knows that the government killed all those people.

There is no need to worry about the militias. They are simply citizens exercising their rights. If the government is as corrupt as their members believe it to be, then the government will destroy them, and they will die as martyrs. If the government is not so corrupt, then nothing will come of this movement.

I don’t know that it’s necessarily a militia thing. Oath Keepers is most certainly NOT a hate group.
What I think the Obamunists don’t realize is that this is Mr. and Mrs. Middle America saying, “We don’t want your socialist healthcare plan” “We don’t want your bail out’s or your stimulus plan.” “We want our Constitutional republic back and you have just about pushed us to the point of resolution by force of arms.”
And remember those Oathkeepers I mentioned? They’re on our side.

How do we stop "ignoring the threat?"

Thanks for describing the danger these groups present, but how do you suggest we "stop ignoring the threat?"

Do we suspend the 1st and 2nd Amendments? Do we let the government regulate the internet, as some of the commenters have suggested?

That will only confirm their fears that our Constitution and Bill of Rights are being shredded (complaints many of these "Patriots" brought against Bush, too, if you study their rhetoric). It will galvanize their organizations. It will also bring more people to their organizations as the government brings the hammer down. Think about how every iron-footed move of Bush only emboldened his enemies and made the situation worse.

Do we send in FBI spies? You'd be surprised how many of the people in these groups are already FBI spies...

why is it"right wing" militia what does that mean?why not announce left wing militias on the rise?since the government is in a stae of treason here no wonder these militias group up to get some kind of protection from their government.but a militia is infiltrated the moment it is organized, the FBI likres to hide in trees and blow woens heads off, then murder their children then just exterminate the whole family. a militia should be formed by all and then march on D.C. and say"we no lika dis stuff ya doin ta us no more we fire you and make you go home watch television" that will put them on notice that the people aint the dullards we were a few years ago.

Just because someone at a protest rally "looks" like a militia member or even if they claim to be, doesn't mean they are. The Federal Government has been caught numerous times trying to instigate violence at these protests dressed as militia members, etc. to make it look like militia members are "violent kooks" and cast them in a negative light. Even in the common vernacular, there's a certain disdain for the word "militia" as it draws images of Tim McVeigh etc., instead of images of Paul Revere or George Washington, who without the use of militia's, would not have been able to secure our Liberties.

There will be more rightwing militias the more the so-called "left" keeps selling out

and playing go-along-get-along with the Republicans under the "centrist" disguise.

A new rise in militias?

Just thought I'd point out that the coiled rattlesnake was also a symbol of the left-wing weather-underground, so I don't think it's fair to use it to represent right-wing militias. Just a thought

Our "guvmint", as the surviving inhabitants of Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, et al., could tell them, disposes of destructive power to a degree that these wingnuts can't even imagine. What a crew of brainless hysterics.

At Grassley's town hall metting today a moron suggested they get guns and go to DC to start the killing. Grassley didn't disagree. Nobody has arrested Grassley,. We are in a civil war now but only one side is using violence and they are not apologizing. Things are more serious than any of us may know. What are you going to do?

I have no desire to cast aspersions upon any group, right nor left. I have too much respect for all to try and slam someone I don't even know by name. This is a free country, contrary to what some neocons would like to think. I am also a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division. Said all that to say this: If any cracker wants a piece of my ass, best bring all your pals. Even at sixty-five I CAN AND WILL SHOT TO KILL any moron who thinks he has that God given right. Are we clear about this Rush Limbaugh, Rick Savage, and every loose canon out there who may have told otherwise. Airborne all the way. SwampFox-82nd
