The Vatican's Perverted Sense of Justice: Pedophiles Stay in the Church, While Priests Who Ordain Women Are Excommunicated

By Bill Frogameni, Ms. Magazine. Posted April 9, 2009.

A priest who dared to ordain a woman was told he had 30 days to renounce his actions or face excommunication.

What happens if a Catholic priest molests children?

Usually, he's protected by the Church hierarchy. Maybe he'll eventually have his parish or diocese taken away, or be switched to another one -- often after years of serial abuse. But there's a good chance he'll stay in the Church.

So what happens if a Catholic priest publicly supports ordaining women? Well, then he's excommunicated on the double.

"Nearly 5,000 Catholic priests [in the U.S.] have sexually abused over 12,000 Catholic children…but they were not excommunicated," says Father Roy Bourgeois, who faced the latter scenario after helping celebrate what the Vatican considers to be an illegitimate ordination mass in August 2008. Bourgeois, a Vietnam veteran with a Purple Heart who became a prominent peace activist, stood with the trailblazers of the female ordination movement in Lexington, Ky., to make Janice Sevre-Duszynska a Catholic priest.

For thumbing his nose at one of the most sacred tenets of the conservative hierarchy -- that only men are worthy of the priesthood -- Bourgeois was swiftly rebuked by the Vatican in a letter two months later, telling him he had 30 days to renounce his actions or face excommunication.

After his deadline passed without a definitive word, Bourgeois told Ms. Magazine that his heart wouldn't allow him to cave in to the Vatican. "Deeper than the hurt, the sadness, there's a peace that comes from knowing I followed my conscience in addressing this great injustice," he said.

Still, Bourgeois wanted to question the Pope: "Who are we as men to say that our call to the priesthood is valid, but yours as women is not?" Given that 64 percent of American Catholics in a 2005 AP/Ipsos poll agreed that women should be ordained, they might ask the pope the same thing. But the Vatican, despite parish closings across America and a 30 percent decline in priests between 1965 and 2000, doesn't seem ready for that question.

"The church believes that the intent of Jesus' founding of the priesthood is that it was reserved for men," explained Sister Mary Anne Walsh, spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. But, speaking for the group Roman Catholic Womenpriests, Bridget Mary Meehan, herself ordained in 2006 and subsequently excommunicated, disputes that teaching. "Jesus never ordained anyone," says Meehan. "And in the tradition, women were ordained deacons, priests and bishops for the first 1,200 years."

The Vatican's strong response to Bourgeois' action stands in stark contrast to its overwhelming failure to punish molesters. Even a homicidal priest, Father Gerald Robinson, who was convicted in 2006 of the satanicritualistic murder of a 71-year-old nun in an Ohio chapel (see "The Nun's Story," Summer 2006), has not been excommunicated. Though Robinson to date has spent more than two and a half years in prison and lost an appeal, he still remains a priest, albeit one quietly retired by his bishop.

Walsh's explanation: As heinous as the crime was, the Church doesn't excommunicate for murder.

The Vatican may soon have further explaining to do, this time in a U.S. courtroom. A federal appeals court ruled in late November that a lawsuit arising in Kentucky over the Vatican's negligence in dealing with sexual abuse could proceed -- the first time a court that high has recognized the Holy See's potential liability in this arena.

One of the key pieces of evidence in the lawsuit? A 1962 memo, approved by Pope John XXIII, directing Catholic bishops to keep silent about sex-abuse claims.

I know many, oh so many people with excellent moral compass who call themselves Catholic and refuse to leave the abomination that the Catholic church is. It boggles my mind.

If people feel strongly about this, they should simply leave the Roman Catholic church and find a more amenable religion. I personally do not follow any established religion, but I subscribe to the belief that the world that we can grasp with our 5 senses does not encompass the whole of the reality, and that there is some kind of spiritual dimension. I find the concept of religious worship an interesting cultural phenomenon, and subscribe to the spirit of the Christian 10 commandments, but it has always seemed to me that people put far too much weight on organized religion.

The Roman Catholic Church, whatever else it may represent, is in the business of keeping, accumulating and expanding its power. The livelihood of its (male) priests must be protected at all costs. Loyalty to the group trumps all other considerations. But it also leads to people leaving the church.

I agree with Don Cuppit, the theologian who argues that religion is a human construct. We make it up.

However, that is not to deny the spiritual, the deep feeling of connectedness within a mystery.

As a Long Recovered Catholic- I have to ask who still doesn't see the Vatican as Satans minions?
Really their history of atrocities span millenia. They Retained the 'roman', who were the tortures and killers of Christ. In fact wear the beloved Roman Techinque around their necks, and worship it as an idol. They run rough shod over 'One nad Only One Lord God', by worshipping 'His' son or the mere fleshy vessel God used to Appear to humanity in (like thinking the Genies bottle granted the Wishes). They Celebrate the day a man of Peace was Cruxified, and Call it 'Good'.They refused to acknowledge that God Touched Mary first & foremost- leaving her story behind, because they wanted Jesus to be the 'Divine' son,.. why not Mary the divine CHOSEN wife? they have tortured ,slaughtered and burned their way through history- laying waste to numerous innocent people-esp Women.
Now they habor men who defile children-scarring them for life- are their some murderous pedophiles they have also hidden? Grant Re ordaination to those who refuse to accept the proven fact Millions of Jews were murdered- Was Hitler too devote a follower and Servant to the long held LIE that the Jews Killed Christ?
The Vatican has broken every 'golden Rule' since Peter Seized the Throne of Power over the 'Word', and this Nazi Youth Ratz is the Epitome of it's Historical Immorality and Dark Con. Let's not foget 'Rock' are not always indication of stability- but the most basic Weapon. How did Cain kill Able- with a Rock?, Obviously not with a metal sickle, since it was the 1st murder? Mose Kill the Eygyptian? With a damn Rock! Apparently Peter had some jealosy and disdain for the ladies too.
How can anyone deny the Vatican has not become the purveyor of wealth and opulence that Jesus had outright rejected during Passover- Are they not the same greedy Money Changers wtihin the 'Temple'?How much gold and treasures has the Vatican accumulated and kept for itself- plenty to help feed the poor I'm sure.
Peter didn't Reject the Temple leaders heiracrchy or hypocrisies, or Roman power & Wealth- He Coveted it (a Big 10 infraction). Just like those 'Born Again Evangelicals' are doing now with their Mega churches. You don't reject something when you work so hard to become it! Evangelicals calling the Vatican the Great Whore is nothing more than sour grapes when their doctrines and modes of operation are exactly the same, proving them green with envy (a deadly mortal sin).
Since a person will face judgement alone- what is the use of a congregation? .Since God is All knowing, our thoughts and action are known long before we enter a church. It must be merely to pay homage to the one at the pulpit. As history has shown they not only don't know what the hell they are talking about- their motivation is purely self serving, ei'the jews kills Christ'..Gee Roman why would you say that?

This column is so ill-informed that I normally would ignore it, but AlterNet does such a good job on other issues that it deserves a response.
Only bishops ordain priest, not priests other priests.
Excommunication does not necessarily measure the gravity of an offense, but the degree of deliberateness in opposing the law of God and the Church. A pedophile, an alcoholic, a kleptomaniac and other categories of sinners can want to love God and obey his commands even as they fail. Someone who sets out to deliberately, publicly, flout the church's teaching cannot coherently be kept in the fold.

I'm not a Catholic, or Christian or Jew. I'm an atheist. I'm for everyone minding their own business in religious matters.

Catholic doctrice bars female priests. It has for a long time. Why? Some language in the New Testament and in St Paul. Do I care? No. I don't care that some people think Jesus rose from the dead either. It's all myth designed to make people feel life is worthwhile. I think it's transparent psychotherapy. But it works for those who choose to believe, fine. You don't like it, go to another church, or believe in God and join no church, or be an atheist or Buddihist or whatever.

Don't expect s two thousand year old church based on faith and superstition to do what's rational or "legal" in the business world. The church is not a secular government, despite its doubling as such throughout the Middle ages(when there were no civil rights laws).

Rape is against both religious and secular law on the other hand. Prosecute church officials who obstruct justice or who hide fugitives from justice.

But criminal acts by priests or their superiors have nothing to do with women priests. Orthodox Jews restrict female participation in services, including a ban on being a Rabbi. Gonna haul the governing board of Orthodox rabbis in Britain, Canada and the US before civil rights agencies? You might as well legislate that 15% of all rabbis in New York be African-American, or that Spanish translators be available in every synagogue.

Religion is irrational. Let those who want to be irrational be irrational. Including the Pope, the "successor" to Peter(!) and his "bishops".

. . .to announce that you think something previously considered unacceptable should now be accepted than to have it revealed that you did something terribly wrong.

Politicians, especially Republican ones, can commit multiple adulteries and get away with it. But they can't state ahead of time that they're okay with adultery, even though it is obviously true. It apparently is worse in some arenas to state that you're for gay marriage than to be a married man caught in gay sex in a public restroom. Words speak louder than actions.

THE ONLY RELIGION OPENLY CRITICISED
Posted by: VZEQICVA on Apr 13, 2009 9:34 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Right or wrong, the world weighs in on the actions of the Catholic Church and always has. No other religion can be touched, much less criticised. Remember when we read about the ten things not to say to a Muslim? No doubt, there are things about The Catholic Church that people just dont like. But there isn't a single religion out there that doesn't need cleaning up. As for the women, ALL religions treat women as nothing more than a way to create more members for its church. It ain't just the Catholics. For whatever reason the other religions are off limits and criticism is a no-no. The Catholic Church is not likely ever to have women priests. As for the pedophiles, they are literally all over the world and they're not Catholic priests. It's a practice built in to many cultures. Grown men and young boys. It's nothing new. How about grown men and teenage girls in the cults here in the U.S. Call it religion and the conduct has protection under the constitution. Why are these men not criminals? Just wondering. Thanks, ANNA

yep, for centuries the perverts in robes have been blaming women for all evil in the world. And I guess they still do.
But destroying a child's entire life by sexually abusing him while acting on God's behalf is okay with them.
As a former Catholic (thank you Jesus for saving me!) I join others who believe this church has hurt, tortured, judged and killed more people in the name of God than any institution in the history of mankind.
And that nazi pope scares the CRAP out of me!
I bet they still have the insane chair with the hole in the seat to test the manhood of all popes.

A-POOR

America is now over 50% Catholic in religious preference.
When our currency goes to support the Vatican, parasite priests, and maybe a school or two, you will certainly have depression.

The primary force behind amnesty for illegals is Catholicism. The illegals will pay the church, enabling that organization to recoup the funds they have lost in litigations over molestation.

The same can be said of so many large organizations. They breed this system. They attack what might make them better, because it disturbs the power of the status quo, they shelter the crimes of those that bow to and serve the power.
It is in everything. The very worst being politics and business, for they are not such voluntary organizations as the various churches and fringes.

For any biology student who has mastered the concept of meiosis, it should be evident that there is only one possible result of a virgin birth (parthenogenesis), a female. Parthenogenesis occurs when an ovum either does not undergo meiosis (remains diploid) or if the chromosomes duplicate themselves afterwards (haploid to diploid.) In either case the dividing ovum is 2X because there is no potential source of a Y chromosome. The other possibility, that Jesus was haploid, would also result in a female (1X) because there is no Y. So either Jesus was female or not the product of a virgin birth. Your choice.

Aside: The fundies who are bent out of shape about how science (evolution) is wrong because it contradicts the literal Bible would really have a hissy fit if they ever considered this one.

catholic church irony
Posted by: tazdelaney on Apr 13, 2009 3:18 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
terrifically ironic that the catholic church which for a thousand years burned homosexuals at the stake is shaken by gays in its own midst.

in fact, the preferred method for burning a 'witch' at the stake was to have at least 2 gay men at her feet – hence the term 'faggot,' a bundle of kindling. of course, as chaucer wrote in 'the canterbury tales,' the wealthy could buy their way out of all that with an 'indulgence' paid to the church...

the biblical definition of witch? "woman at the head of a household who shall pay no obedience to a manfolk." aka a feminist or just self-respecting, strong woman. also biblical: "thou shalt not suffer an witch to live." the evil bible...

it should be noted that the term pedophile in contemporary usage, while it creates the image of child-rapists... the laws in most states make it so that to have sex with anyone under that state's age of consent an act of pedophilia. now in the 1900s, the AVERAGE age of a girl in england when married was 14 and boys 16. that was the average, mind you. it was legal for jerry lee lewis to twice marry 13 year olds but today you'd best not look sideways at anyone under 20 or next thing you know, you're a sex offender for life, complete with double jeopardy.

in oklahoma some years ago, an 18 year old fellow was given 15 years prison time for having given a 15 year old oral sex. that particular judge also put elders in jail for nudism in their own back yard behind a fence, as seen only by a peeping tom policeman! what aldous huxley called 'the antisex league' is in force these days.

there are predatory gays and heterosexuals but the real point is whether coercion and force were used. personally, the first time i consciously consented to have sexual activity was when i was 6 years old and the other person was 7 years old. the state can say what it likes, i'd had several consensual acts of sex before i reached puberty and none of those should've meant punishment for anyone; not even that 15 year old who deceived me when i was 11...

it is of note that while the crowd hysteria over all of this rages; we hear nothing about the mass-murder of children by american policy in iraq, afghanistan and anywhere else it practices war. i'd bet that a majority of americans think michael jackson should've been lynched; but ask them if all those involved in using clusterbombs, a specifically 'child-targeting weapon,' should be lynched and you'd get a resounding NO, that weapons makers and bombers are doing a fine and necessary job...

similarly, the religious rightwing says it cares for the unborn, but apparently not the born. bombs away!

Yes forgiveness is in all churches. But you wonder when the rapists and molesters are not taken from the church roles and given secular jobs away from the children. Do they not care about children or are they all molesters? I think not but the higher ups do not want to rock the boat as one Cardinal from Rome said " The Americans are making to big a deal out of this child molestation thing" (Paraphrase) Oh by the way was Adolph Hitler excommunicated? No not to most knowledgeable people. Makes you wonder what was going on with the Jews being systematically slaughtered. Just a thought....

After Reading All These Posts I Think; Oh Well

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
God watches as "his children" are abused, tortured , fed confusing thoughts, forced to conform to the wishes of insane, abusive parents, told what to think, how to act, and are expected to "keep your mouth shut" to cover their dirty deeds. Then, after 20 odd years of that form of indoctrination, God expects all of us to
"do the right thing" - whatever that is supposed to be.

What? Run that by me again. God has got to be kidding. Does this God thing expect us to get anything right? Yeah, he does. And, what a shit he is for saying, that we "sin" every time we get it wrong. Then we are presented with the concept of a "sinless" savior who died to "save" us, and to make men "free". I don't get the connection.

According to Scripture, God subjected us to vanity; Rom. 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly". He deliberately caused us to "sin" and condemns us for doing so. Then, God sends a "Savior" to "cleanse" us of all our immorality. How nice, but I still don't get the connection. What does Jesus' life have to do with my life. We are two separate and quite different people. Beside, I never met him. And, don't give me that crap that we have "seen" him (John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father"? What is that supposed to mean? Please, spare me the bullshit.

Beside all this; most people who have ever lived on planet earth have never even heard of the name "Jesus". In fact, the word, "Jesus" is a blend of Greek, French and English. Jesus' name originally started with the letter "I", and in the 17th century the "I" became "J", thanks to the French. So, what is in the "Name"? Nothing, really. So much for "The Holy Name Society", that the RCC uses with great success to keep everyone in line.

Since this character Jesus died, nothing has changed, except, the persecutors of mankind have changed from the "heathen" doing the torturer, to the "Church" doing the torturer. Well, that at least, is "progress".

Now, out of all of this, we are supposed to have a clear understanding of life. Dream on, because that is all we have; a vague concept of an ever changing dream; not knowing fact from fantasy; and where good deeds are punished by "evil-doers", and "evil-/doers" go free, to live another day. That, my friends, is "God in action"; here to serve mankind.

What do you expect from an institution that still believes the Middle Ages never ended.

The Catholic church is a business...a very wealthy business with land holdings world wide measuring in the billions of dollars. They have a board of directors and a CEO ( the Pope ) and a set of rules. Like most mega-corporations they can's see to find out how to do what is right...they are stuck in centuries of out dated tradition designed to control and subjugate their followers.

Many people know nothing of these rules because they just follow blindly and the church counts on this. That is one reason they won't allow change, it draws attention to their own backwards thinking.

Not allowing priests to marry is another of their out dated rules. There are social networks of married priests. ( I know some ) who gave up the priesthood to marry. A good friend of mine is a former priest married to a former nun. They tell me there are openly married priests right at the gates of the Vatican.

Here in the US are married catholic priests with families. They converted from Episcopal where they were already married, and of course the church does not allow divorce so the have to accept them as married priests...I have yet to hear of their church melting as a result. I doubt a female priest would cause any damage either.

Yahweh,
what do you think of women being ordained as clergy in the Christian Church?”

“It is acceptable in my eyes and it is not to be turned into a matter of conjecture as it is the word and it is the way and it is the truth. And my truth is spoken through men and through women.

“Let me suggest that you write this down as well.

“I created men for the purpose of grooming and nurturing the earth; and to do this they have to reproduce. Therefore I created women with strong survival instincts whose main purpose was to reproduce and nurture the young, the sick and the elderly.

“Women are not chattels but were provided for men to have and to hold and to care for their children. And I made woman five-sevenths the stature and strength of a man. And they are now developing to their full potential and are able to carry on and help with the scientific and technical advances men have made.

“Women are quite capable of doing the work men can do and some have excelled in fields that are not regarded as women’s work at all. And women are also excellent communicators and most can articulate their thoughts very well.

“And the tongue of a woman is capable of speech is it not? And the tongue of a woman has the same impact on the hearing as the tongue of a man, so why should church leaders say that women are not allowed to preach my commandments and speak in my name?”

“I think it is probably because of cultural differences, ego and arrogance, Yahweh. These men and most men believe that women are lesser beings than they are and see them as unclean as they menstruate and go through emotional hormonal changes every month; therefore church leaders think that women are not worthy of being given the role of speaking on your behalf.”

“It is true, and these men are wrong to say that women are less capable of speaking in my name and say they are made solely for the comfort of man; and I made them as a companion for man.

“And it is my will that all can speak on my behalf and it is my will that women are allowed to say whatever is on their mind and take part in politics, and take part in decision making.”

"Let it remain that My Word is My Way.
Your loving Father,
Yahweh."

Hmmm, so the Vatican never excommunicated Adolph Hitler.... or Mussolini or Franco for that matter.

Well, in regard to at least heterosexual pedophilia, they read it in the Bible and saw that it was good...

The Vatican, being just one of a number of splinter sects off of Judaism, is only enshrining Jewish "common law" along with Imperial Roman civil & common law for the elite citizen & Patrician classes (later carried over into Italian civil government) which stated that the free-born women of Rome give sexual consent at the onset at puberty or generally 12 years of age for marriage; or if ousted from the family due to dishonor of some sort give legal consent at a similar age to survive by prostitution (although, depending on the circumstanses this could be viewed anywere from Causitry such as when Crusaders raped Moslem women when they were "tempted beyond measure"; to as severe as mortal sin) - as for example, in the brothels of Rome, which were often "taxed monetarily" in some fashion by the Rome government & the Vatican.

For example in the Brooke Shields vehicle Pretty Baby she worked as a prostitute with quasi-legality in historical connection to the Roman Catholic French Quarter at the age of 12 AND was married with the blessings of the Priest at the age of 12 to a man well into his twenties or even thirties in a Roman Catholic church.

Remembering again, The Vatican is founded upon the religion of Christendom which is founded upon her eternal "Father" (God: "Hear O Israel, There is one God/ These three are One") impregnating ("coming upon" KJV) a Jewish 12 year old or so named Mary and giving her to a 30 something year old or so man named Joseph to sleep naked with in the same bed (apparently they were poor).

Given as there was no such a thing as a Roman Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical or even a Messianic Jew for that matter back in those days - ONLY Orthodox Jews (and some half-Jewish Samaritans); Judaism states that in order pass from the chattel ownership of a woman in legal contract termed "Betrothal" to the penetrative chattel ownership of a woman in the legal standing termed as "Wife" (rape was punished identically whether the woman had a "Betrothal" status or a "Wife" status) the following must occur:

Joseph of legal necessity had to have either broken Mary's hymen with more than a few penetrative thrusts with at least a Quicky on the wedding night (even if they thereafter had mutually agreed to abstain from sexual intercourse from henceforth) or, as the Bible states, AFTER Mary did her Jewish mother ritual of purification for uncleaness 40 days after giving birth to a male child by offering couple of doves for a sin atonement sacrifice, for 12 year old Mary to have been even legally married according to Judaism.

So one could suppose that common to all male-centric organized religion, has enshrined with Divine authority behind it what men have generally always wanted to do since since the Neanderthal & Cro-Magnon days, namely, that when a young girl would begin to "come into season".... what some in the 21st century term as Pedophilia.

As in the case of the over 50 year old Mohammed and 9 year old Aisha, with many claiming Divine authorisation for 6-9 year olds sitting on one's lap, open mouth deep tongue French kissing, masturbatory fondling, breast fondling or even oral sex. Confer with your local Rabbi or read the Talmud to find out what the Jews Mary and Joseph may have been up to cuddled up on those long cold nights together.

SOME will shout "Patriarchy!.. Enshrined Pedophilia!.. Opiate of the people!

SOME will shout "Natural Law!.. If it's good enough for God, then...!"
