Barack Obama, Feminist in Chief?

By Katha Pollitt, The Nation. Posted December 8, 2008.

Obama has an opportunity to make gender equality a keystone of his administration.

"Can't we just be happy for five minutes?" my daughter asks when I tell her about the criticisms Barack Obama is getting from some feminists I know. "It's not that I don't care about sexism. I do! But we have four whole years to complain." Inauguration day is over a month away, but on e-mail lists I belong to, Obama's already chauvinist in chief. He made sexist theorizer Larry Summers director of the National Economic Council. He's turned Michelle Obama, a top-notch lawyer, into a stay-home helpmeet and fashion plate. Barbara Walters's interview with the Obamas comes in for special opprobrium: Barack interrupted Michelle, patronized her ("When Mama's happy, everybody's happy") and on the all-important question of what kind of puppy they would get the children, said it wasn't going to be a (uh-oh) "girly dog" like Walters's beloved Havanese. Not the best choice of words, although I'm with him on little yappy dogs. When I watched the interview on YouTube, I thought the Obamas were great together: affectionate, teasing but respectful, funny, smart, delightful. Barack came across as probably the most involved father to sit in the Senate, let alone the White House, in 200 years. Yes, he interrupted Michelle, but she also interrupted him -- and Walters interrupted them both.

For some women who care about women's equality, the jury is still out on Obama. They voted for him, but they don't trust him to do the right thing for women. Left feminists aren't impressed that he's nominating Hillary Clinton for secretary of state. Mainstream feminists like Salon's Rebecca Traister are disquieted by the "momification" of Michelle. No one has forgotten that Barack called a reporter "sweetie" months ago at a press conference.

Somehow the feminist positions Obama has taken -- on reproductive rights, pay equity, domestic violence, Title IX -- don't seal the deal. And neither does his support for healthcare and unions and early childhood education and raising the minimum wage -- things that, while not gender-specific, will enormously improve the lives of women, perhaps even more than they improve the lives of men.

I don't share the suspicions, the sense of disappointment-in-advance. But I think I understand what's going on. Women's progress has been sluggish for decades -- we're still not even 18 percent of Congress, there's only one woman on the Supreme Court, parking lot attendants still make more than childcare workers, marriage is not usually a partnership of equals. Educated working women, who we tend to hear from the most, especially if they are journalists, struggle to fulfill -- with not enough help from husbands and almost none from society -- the demands of man-size jobs while satisfying standards of motherhood that have become so exacting the Virgin Mary herself would call for a martini. During the Bush years the sense of possibility contracted dramatically, to blaze up with the Hillary Clinton campaign. Never mind that Hillary didn't actually do much for women as either first lady or senator, except in the area of reproductive rights, and that she and Barack had few relevant policy differences. She was a symbol of redress -- finally! -- for all those pent-up justifiable grievances and frustrations.

Unfortunately, I think you gals married him, but he didn't marry you back. You're supposed to cut your deal going in, but you fell fot that hoping-it'll-work-out-for-the-best thing. Obama's really just a consummate player, astute at working the system, not changing it. But you heard what you wanted to hear.

Can't say you weren't warned plenty.

I like Albelda's suggestion about creating jobs for women, not just men. And Pollitt's idea to have task forces reviewing social security and welfare (and Medicare and Medicaid, I might add) for perverseness concerning gender is also a great idea. Is anyone listening on the Obama team?

obama and feminist women

the article says it plenty, especially the part about chris matthews being a sexist jerk at times. many of us did not pick obama in the beginning, we chose hillary. but we then had to realize this. "do we really want a fucking 72 year old fighter jerk whom is really more of an anti-abortionist and birth control then he is telling us he is with his " maverick" repug-nican horseshit?" many women were so mad at matthews, etc. along with all the old democrat boys whom they felt had chosen obama; the quite a few were about to do the stupidest thing of all any progressive woman could do; vote for "grandfather" mc cain! in fact in the last week of the election, you'd be suprised at how many hillary for mc cain voters there still were.
many of us came to realize just who the fuck the real john mc cain actually was! especially the feminists in N.O.W. whom read what NARAL had to say about johnny boy's voting record on women's rights; long before mc jackass dropped the big bomb and chose the lipstick wearing PIG I call "sarah moose-cherry" the christo-fascist bitch'[ palin] as his VP.
and then, many women whom had a brain not influenced by some mega-church's beliefs, or even the small-town fundamentalist pastor or suburban fundamentalist catholic priest; soon took the advice of hillary rodham and told themselves " wake up! bitch! is sarah palin and the anti-lesbian marriage mc cain really what you want for the next four years?"
and so, our more, moderate-conservative sisters out there finally realized whom the real john mc cain was! something that the lesbians already knew after his visit to Ellen's show where he told Mrs. Ellen De Generes herself, " it is my personal belief that marriage shall remain a union between one man and one woman!"
myself, in some ways I was already beginning to see " Ms." Barack Obama as more of a feminist on certain things then hillary was as far back as april. this after Obama mentioned that he'd repal the partial birth abortion law passed by bush; as well as make all marriages, gay or hetero; simply " civil unions" and get the fucking government out of the marriage business. thus leaving " marriage" , however you define it; as something for the churches to either sanction[ unitarians church of christ, many jewish reformed/reconstructionist temples] or in the case of same-sex marriage; simply not allow if they are so against it[ baptists, evangelicals, most catholic churches, etc.]
hillary was over in PA kissing ass to those often moderate-conservative catholic women back in april. trying to drum up votes from the very people whom agree with her on nearly everything BUT abortion-rights/birth control and lesbian/gay marriage!
and so, we got obama because most of us, including most, but not all of, the more moderate republicans and independent women; got to better know just who the fuck the real john mc cain actually was. this through a big mouthed, seemingly ignorant, asshole of a female jackass with a vagina named " Mrs. Governor" Sarah Palin!
so being that nobody really takes ralph nader, cynthia mc kinney, bob barr, as seriously as they really should, much like how many democrats did with dennis kucinich[ whom I was fixing to think was the better FEMINIST man!]; it came right down to republican " more of the same old shit and lies " Mc Cain; V. Barack Obama- whom Hillary Rodham[ Clinton] herself later endorsed for president!
after all, John Mc Cain could talk all about how much he's done for women in america, but when asked why he decided to vote against the lily ledbetter fair pay act by obama[ debate #3]; he showed what a true fucking LIAR and confused asshole he really was!so all we can do is keep the pressure upon Barack Obama now that He/Biden is the president/vice pres. and NOT Mc Dickbrain/Moose-Cherry. and all we can do is wait to see how this " change we can believe in" is really going to be executed by " Ms." Barack Obama.

as for the " momification" of michelle obama? well I hate to say this but I will. women are mostly to blame for this; how a woman is judged by her looks, clothes styles, where they " fit her body right" are " age appropriate" ; or conform to the right season or occasion. put simply, in the man's world, it is often " dog eat dog". but in the women's world, it is "bitch eat bitch". and the women whom are most to blame for this are? you guessed it! those women whom publish all those mostly horseshit-containing, women's magazines such as Real Simple, which should be called " Real Expensive" or the " New Mrs. Ward Cleaver". that and Harpers Fucking Bazzar, In Style, Ladies' Home Journal; all the usual, fashion-is-of-utmost-importance garbage, shit, and trash you'll see at nearly every supermarket check out counter, doctor's office, and Beauty Salon! why? because these magazines seem to depend upon the fashion and cosmetics for their very existance; and so, will promote what pays over 75% of their profits!
to many professional women, this seem to be more important than a professional woman's abilities are by themselves!
here is a great example of this. this summer, when I often would go shopping at the local supermarkets dressed for comfort in just my sports' bra tops and shorts with sandals/sneakers; I'd get these " stares of disapproval" or those " shame on you" looks from many of this town's soccer mom, "queens of professional momification" in the suburbs. this one time, I literally just made a motion to one of them at the fucking produce stand; making my left breast bounce a little just to piss her off even more.
but this is how many women judge both Hillary Rodham[ Clinton] as well as Michelle Obama. you are what you eat, wear, how fat/thin you are, all that fucking bullshit! and believe me, women are their own worst enemies and that is a fact.
if every woman were a butch or butchy-femme lesbian, think of how much land we could restore into forests after we tore down all those malls. how much paper we could save if all those dependent upon cosmetics and fashion industry magazines all went out of business!
