Economic Downturn Hits Women the Hardest

WASHINGTON, Nov 20 -- Women are being disproportionately affected by the U.S. mortgage crisis and economic plunge, said a panel of women leaders Wednesday, urging a strong woman-focused response from the federal government.

In Rhode Island, the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, one woman has not been able to find a job for the past eight months and is losing her house to the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Another, struggling to take care of her 14-year-old granddaughter because her own daughter is in jail, is a tenant in a building that is being foreclosed. She is being evicted by the bank, even though she is willing to pay rent.

These women's stories, told by Sara Mersha, the executive director of Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE) in Rhode Island, are part of what she calls the "economic Katrina."

Mersha spoke along with other women's rights advocates at a teleconference sponsored by the Ms. Foundation for Women called, "Lifted Up or Left Out? Economic Stimulus Policy that Benefits Low-Income Women." The experts discussed the challenges facing women in the United States today and policies that could make a difference.

Mersha said the current sub-prime mortgage crisis is similar to the 2005 hurricane not only in terms of scale -- the number of people affected -- but also who is being hit the hardest. She said that in Rhode Island, most of the foreclosures and evictions are happening in poor communities and neighborhoods with African-American or Latino residents. DARE is doing a local research study concerning the crisis. While visiting homes being foreclosed, Mersha noticed another disturbing trend: "There are disproportionate numbers of women behind those doors," she said.

The effects of the sub-prime mortgage crisis on women are exacerbated by other, pre-existing problems, according to the panelists. Sara Gould, president and CEO of the Ms. Foundation, said that out of the 37 million Americans living in poverty, 27 million are women and children. In fact, she added, single mothers and their families are more likely to live in poverty than any other demographic group in the United States.

Panelists agreed that there is not an adequate support system to help these women living in poverty. Fully two thirds of the minimum wage and below-minimum wage workforce in the United States are women, said Gould. For many of these workers, the laws are inadequate to protect their rights.

Ai-jen Poo, a lead organizer and founder of Domestic Workers United in New York City, advocates on behalf of a huge low-wage workforce: domestic workers. Ai-jen said that in the city, 200,000 women are employed as domestic workers.

Hate to say it, but this is a made-by-women downturn

It was women who wanted the too-big houses, the too-big mortgages, the nice clothes, the lifestyle that couldn't be afforded, the endless shopping trips, dinner and drinks with the girls - all of it a woman-driven economic model that has now collapsed in on itself.

Keep in mind: our economy and society marches to a feminised set of needs and wants. We live in a world of shops, design, fashion, celebrity worship, the triumph of trivia, gossip, image over content - all those are aspects of the feminised economy. And it is that system that is not going down in flames.

Why?

Because it was based on somebody else doing the hard work and paying the bills: the Chinese.

What makes you think MEN didn't also want those material goods as well? Also, these poor women depicted
in the article weren't shopping at Gucci's, their
LANDLORDS and their families were!

The world is dominated by males and it looks it.

Quick:
Answer the following questions.

What world religion is in good balance between the masculine and the feminine with power and leadership shered in proportion?

What government is in balance with near or equal representation of men and women?

In what country or civilization is the value of the feminine equal to the value of the male?

Ummhmmm.... ZERO!

Women do not fare as well as men globally or locally. This is especially in countries run by men with destructive and exclusionary patriarchal beliefs that oppress and harm women and oppress and destroy nature. (that would still be most countries)

This is just not news people. You know this is true. It is a sad truth. But we can make changes.

The natural world is being depleted, there is war and aggression everywhere, the world is overpopulated and women's voices are drowned out by aggressive, violent and relentless domination. There are other masculine traits that are good that are also being oppressed. Men are oppressed too by the extreme aggression in males.

The male dominated world is out of balance, the feminine needs to be included and valued. Balance must be created. We will be lucky to survive if we don't evolve.

ONE BRAIN CELL TROLLING FOR ATTENTION

Your one brain cell is so far south of the equator that you have lost ~ if indeed you ever had ~ intelligence and compassion. I can only deduce that you are in dire need of attention to come up with such tripe.

Check with all your female relatives and see how any of them ended up in a losing position. I am sure there is at least one!

Insult over, it is obvious no one could be quite so stupid as this, but hey! you are an American male and threatened by the powers that be who have had your type under the gun for a few decades now. It is a shame but real men in America are becoming a dying breed. But that is another story entirely.

Get off your misogynistic hobby horse and grow a brain. Debt is NOT a gender issue, it hurts all ~ but women more because many of us are less secure than man thanks to making poor choices in a mate when younger.

Your punishment for such ignorance? Go and volunteer your efforts in an agency set up to help such women. Then write, with depth and compassion, the stories of two women, that show you "get" the pain all of us are in.

Yes, there is a recession waiting to bite your ass too.

Economic Downturn Hits Women the Hardest? Doubtful
Posted by: bizeeb on Nov 28, 2008 7:27 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Economic downturns hurts THE POOR the hardest.

If your comparison is simply between Men vs. Women, than yes, the author is probably correct. But if you're comparing say, middle class, educated white women vs. underfed, underprivileged teen moms from the projects, than the former is in better shape than the latter.

Or, considering that blacks, latinos, and other minorities are already worse of than middle class American whites, you could just as accurately written that "Economic Downturn Hits Minorities Harder than Whites" and it would've been just as true. It just depends how you set up your comparison. Here at Alternet, the only comparison you ever see however is the one found, AGAIN, in this article: men vs. women.

Why? Why is alternet seemingly stuck in the 70's, or 80's at best, when it comes to feminist thought? Look, no one's buying it anymore, and rightfully so. For me, I live in Seattle, mysogyny is very hard to find, and the examples constantly cited here, (e.g. Chris Mathews' "blatant woman bashing"; no mention of Cynthia McKinney in the media; portraying Sarah Palin as an attractive airhead, etc.) simply don't add up to as much as many feminists think they do.

As I see it, where I work and live, the people I meet and know, women have it over men in almost every conceivable way. Sorry alternet writers and like minded feminists, less and less people are buying that crap anymore: subscriptions to Ms. magazine are basically non-existent, last I read , the company was on the verge of bankruptcy; NOW membership is in the same boat; the culture in general, has ignored feminism, look at lil kim or christina aguilara or Mtv most of the time, and you'll find barely dressed women constantly parading around; in every measurable way, prostitution, strip clubs, porn industry, etc. feminist thought is being completely ignored. It's just the "smart" writers and some womens studies profs that even say any of this stuff anymore.

Wake up! It's not 1978 anymore.

P.S. We already know that, "Another Depression Will Hit Women the Hardest", so please don't even write that article; or any that fit the "BLANK Will Hit Women the Hardest" mold. It's lame and it's not good journalism at all.

Problem is having children, not one's gender
Posted by: billwald on Nov 28, 2008 7:55 AM

How can a single woman with children NOT live on the poverty end of the scale unless we go to a socialist system where children are a state asset?

Look at it this way. If there were millions of single males raising children we males would invent some sort of cooperative system to handle the problem but women have never learned to work together.

Second, the tax and welfare laws are against women who want to pool resources for economic benefit. There is also a trust issue.

If there was tax law equality, two woman with children could share a house and bank account. The one who can command the best pay scale works full time and the other tends the kids full time. They would have the economic advantage of a traditional family. Domestic partnership without the sexual perversion . . . maybe partners who could handle the sex problem on their own - pun intended.

women are "free" to wear what they want and have in fact taken over men's fashion. Too bad men can't make inroads into women's fashion unless they are prepared to face persecution by the brain damaged intolerants in society. When women can shut up and stand up for fashion freedom for us guys, then we'll stand up and fight for your economic equalities. Until then, SHUT THE FUCK UP !

By the way, single women don't get PERSECUTED as much as single men do.

Single women are far more likely to be given access to adoption whereas single guys can't. Thank god I'm married or life would have felt like a lonely hell as I'm witnessing from single men in their 30s and 40s who were not the macho-egotistical types and were yet rejected by women and never given a chance at marriage.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Does this article bring out peoples hurts and fears or what? Some very mean spirited words here. IN GENERAL woman do indeed fare much worse in recessionary times. IN GENERAL it is the women providing shelter and food for the children. IN GENERAL women are paid less and are less likely to find work. So IN GENERAL women do and will suffer more from recessions. Just facts. It's a fact that in hard times when more men lose jobs, more men also walk out on their families contributing even more to the greater hardships of women AND children in general. So lets show some compassion here in these difficult times and try to figure out how to support one another no matter what sex we are. We don't need nasty attitudes to add to the hurt already upon us.

OLDER WOMEN SUFFER MOST OF ALL!

IF you are considered too OLD for the workforce and too YOUNG for social security...

IF your husband who was supposed to be your soul mate and life partner suddenly DIES and there is no insurance or pension ...

IF your husband who was supposed to be your soul mate and life partner suddenly THROWS you out like yesterday's garbage AND gets a much younger women... AND his slickster lawyer leaves you a house you cannot afford to maintain ( high property taxes, huge mortgage, enormous utility bills...) and a car for which you cannot afford insurance...

IF you are a single woman and you never were fortunate enough to get a job that offered retirement beyond social security, or health benefits and you are suddenly fired after having been in the industry for 20 years...

And you have been unable to get a job for a year because employers want to hire younger, prettier women who look fine and they can pay less....

If you are a woman whose family members are all dead and you have nowhere to turn...

YOU WILL PROBABLY SOON BE HOMELESS AND VICTIMIZED BY THE SCUM WHO WANTED TO LIVE THAT LIFESTYLE!

IT IS A DISGRACE HOW OLDER WOMEN ARE TREATED IN THIS COUNTRY! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO STOP THIS DISCRIMINATION AND ABUSE!!!!!

today older women are disposable

Isn't it the truth.....when you can no longer spit out another future tax payer and you can't contribute to the national gross domestic product, then you are worthless. This is shameful, and until we change the national attitude toward women: equal pay for equal work, social security for raising children at home, wages for raising children, equal numbers of women in the government, and Medals of Honor for giving birth....then we can sit down and talk about equal. Until then, older women are yesterday's news and they are being thrown out with the trash. Disrespectful to anyone human, no matter where. If you are lucky enough to have a living mother, call her, be good to her, and let her know you are there for her. Don't wait to be asked, and for God's sake don't wait to get begged!

Anthropologist Marvin Harris explained that men gained political and military power because a. they had the physical strength (genetically acquired) and the weapons to hunt and fight (and never gave them up). b. women did have to hunt when numbers were fewer, but when numbers increased, men displaced them: besides, there was no substitute for women for nursing babies (genetics again). Maybe if women did have spears they might have fought to keep them, but they still had less strength than men. Harris notes it was thousands of years before the invention of gunpowder and the Viet Cong and it didn't make a difference whether it was a man or a woman sniping at you. The Dahomey did have a female soldier corps, armed with firearms.
