Dear Conservatives, Will You Help Save the Republic from Military Takeover?

By Naomi Wolf, AlterNet. Posted October 18, 2008.

Dear Conservative America:

I am reaching out with a warning to you that is as heartfelt as the one I have been bringing my fellow citizens for months. But you are the most important audience of all for this, because you hold the key to whether or not we can save our republic in time.

I have been arguing that we are seeing the classic building blocks being laid for a police state: My thesis in The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot is that we are seeing the classic 10 steps being set in place that always underlie a violent police state. My argument in its sequel, Give Me Liberty, is that we must rise up as tactically and effectively as patriots to stop this suppression of freedom.

I hope to persuade you of the profound moral repugnance a true conservative should feel for the plans that are afoot in this nation.

What is the newest news? The Army Times declared that "beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the (1st Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division) will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North" ... "the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities."

They are tasked to help with "civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack …"

What this means is that U.S. citizens can now be "controlled" by the military on our streets through technologies -- such as Tasers and rubber bullets -- that terrify and torment and stun but do not usually kill citizens the way that citizens in Iraq are terrified, tormented and stunned by U.S. military forces.

Who will be "subdued," according to the blueprint, if and when this military unit takes to our streets? The first group of Americans to be subdued is likely to be protesters; then, going by the blueprint, you will see the military using Tasers to subdue people who ask whether there is a warrant permitting agents to burst into their home, as happened at the RNC. People could be Tasered while protesting when voters are turned away by the wholesale purges of quarter-millions of voters from the rolls that Robert Kennedy Jr. has been documenting; or, there is likely to be Tasering and other kinds of subjugation of people protesting corrupted voting machines.

Why does this undermine American freedom? Federal laws, most notably the Posse Comitatus Act, have prohibited the military from being deployed within the United States for 200 years. Yet the Army Times reports that "expectations are that another, as yet unnamed, active-duty brigade will take over and that the mission will be a permanent one."

The founders sought to keep soldiers off our streets because they knew how easily a standing army could subdue a population. That's why the National Guard is answerable primarily to the governors of states and hence to the people of the United States. But the military is answerable to the commander in chief. These are the president's troops. The president now has a personal army. One definition of a police state is when the leader has seized control of the military to police citizens domestically.

Why listen to me? Not because I am a genius, but because this blueprint is so very predictive. Listen to me because everything that I warned would happen, according to the historical record, has happened, and I have documented the borne-out evidence of the crisis in Give Me Liberty.

No really, that's what they'll say. They will never listen to you. They have put you in the bin labeled anti-American despite your intentions (and they are dang good ones) a long time ago.

That's how far this has gone. They are beyond convincing. In fact, if you keep saying these provocative things, they'll label you a terrorist...and you'll be in a Halliburton built detention camp.

I am sorry for the pessimism. I sure hope you can get through to them. I know for sure that my conservative friends are lost, as I have been trying to talk to them for years....

Good Question to Ask Both Candidates

Generally I agree with Naomi Wolf a person whose books need to read and discussed widely.

Regarding this important "open letter to conservative patriots", I would add that each of our presidential candidates need to be asked the following critical question-

"What,if any, is the role of our military in domestic affairs of our nation in times of a proven domestic crisis?"

Hurricaine Katrina was a bone-fide crises where I believe the miltary played a postive role albiet too late?

But other perceived or fabricated crises some of which have been exaggerated for political ends have been used illegally and dangerously used by this Bush adminstration.

While I believe that this is an extremely dangerous trend I personally believe that the concentration of power into the excutive branch and it's ultimate enforcer-the US miltary- has hit its peak.

Many military leaders have great unwarranted fear of Obama so they are flexing muscle now.

All of this said the citizens of any nation must be constantly vigilent of the concentration of power by a leader who has a large military. History has repeatedly taught us that tragic lesson

As an old GE commercial once said "FREEDOM IS EVERYTHING!

It is pretty much true.

The extreme Right wing does not serve the American state or the American people. They are criminals, as were Mussolini and Hitler. Bush breaks the law. He should be in prison. Where is our system of law enforcement? If we allow McCain to come to power it will continue and become worse. There will be a depression, world war, and marshal law. Our way of life will be over.

We will be very lucky to see the peoples choice, Obama, ever take office. We are in crisis. Hope they don't have the guts to cease power before the election. Hope their buddies from Saudi Arabia do not attack again.

This military stuff is certainly scary and of course should not be taken lightly. Something happened to me yesterday that has left me totally convinced that these so called "conservatives" (what do they want to conserve?) will do anything so as not to relinquish their ill conceived power. My daughter, I always considered her to be one of the thinking crowd. MBA - leader in her profession etc etc. She has also been an Obama one hundred percent supporter from day one. She also happens to be a NEVER miss Mass Catholic. Yesterday, she informed me that she will NOT vote in this years's election. WHY?
Very simple reason. At last Sunday's mass, the fiery priest spouted in no uncertain terms,
"You will commit a sin, if you vote for OBAMA,
You must back McCain's family values" My daughter and I am sure many, many others was caught in the proverbial - rock and a hard place. Her solution - just don't vote. Just how far will these coupists, Hitlerites go in order to subject the vast majority of citizens
to their whims and ambitions? Really sad but very true.

Troops, elections and depression
Posted by: chorton on Oct 18, 2008 3:58 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
They don't need troops for a terrorist attack, no matter how severe, or for a natural disaster. If the Louisiana National Guard hadn't been in Iraq it could have handled the emergency police work of Katrina. So what are the scenarios that they might be anticipating which would require troops in the streets under presidential control? Scenarios that would justify support from the leaders of both "parties"?

The Republicans might need troops to suppress the population after a massive vote theft or military coup, if that's what they're planning; but are the Democrats (the leadership and DLC, that is) so spineless or traitorous that they would quietly, meekly and consistently cooperate in preparations for their own demise? Maybe, but that explanation seems like a stretch.

Another reason could be that they know the economy is about to collapse profoundly, leaving the people desperate and enraged, and taking with it the legitimacy of their system, which in the modern era has rested on the claim that they've solved the problem of depressions.

This explanation has its problems too; if this is the thinking of those at the top, we have to wonder why the news that they think this hasn't reached the stock and financial markets, which after all are not in a total panic. But at least it would explain the bi-partisan support for each of the many steps that have been taken over the last eight years toward authorizing and preparing for a full presidential takeover.

Eight years ago, I was telling anyone who would listen - face to face, in the papers, on the radi and four times on national television - if we send this homicidal piece of shit, this disgusting, half-witted little asshole from Crawford, Texas to the Oval Office - to the White House - we'll regret it for the rest of out lives. Our great, great grand children, who will never even know our names, we'll curse us for being so reckless.

I realize full well that George W. Bush is a sick and deeply disturbed man. So deeply embedded into his mind is the edipal thing to outdo Poppy, He probably has fantasies about raping Barb. This is one sick motherfucker. No pun intended.

That is why it is so important to get out the vote on Election Day. Barack Obama id not the perfect candidate. If I had had my way, we would now bw at the twilight of Nader's second term. But as the cumpulsive gambler said when told that the roulette wheel he was betting on was rigged, "I know it. But it's the only game in town.

Just trying to beg staunch "conservatives" is like trying to teach pigs to sing. The Democrats need to quit writing off their base because the base gets turned off and the moderates and independents will see pandering to the rightwing as a message that Democrats are opportunists. Even now, why is more money being spent on electing "conservative" Democrats while even moderate progressives are being left to dry? Check out the Congressional races and see for yourself. The bankrupted "conservative" ideology may have peaked out in 2004 but the Democrats don't plan to give that ideology the final blow and turn to progressive/liberal/moderate ideologies for a change.

The actual and the ideal

Too late. It's a fait accompli. De facto and de jure, the Corporate-State as still yet being consolidated and firmed up stands above the people, the citizens of the USA. Among the prerogatives of the State is: a monopoly on lethal force. In relation to functions, policing stands, not as distinct, but as a continuum of degree with the military.

The Declaration of Independence and it's content is dead letter, and belongs to historical research. The Constitution is well on its way to the same fate.

Ideal: Rights not Might.
Actual: Might is Right.

The Reality is that within a month the Bush Administration plans to add several more nations to the list of those from whome travelers need no visa to enter the USA. The excuse is to make tourism easier to help the economy. The reality is it will soon be much easier for terrorists to sneak into the USA and carry out another violent attack, and thus much easier for Bush to declare a national emergency and rule by decree as dictator.

Man I hate the Word 'Rovian' or such Undue Credit being paid to this 'Turd'. Rove was popping zits when this Twisted Propaganda made it's debut.Character assasination has been going on forever- But has become the tactic of Choice in the last 30 yrs. Rove is Irrelevant, so references to him should be limited to his own 'acheivement' in a long line of Propaganda Ministers.
And Frankly those who are still clueless about the Unraveling of All Taht American REALLY Stands for, will Probably Never figure it out.
Logic does NOT Penetrate their circuits. and this has NOTHING to do with Education level, it's a matter of Curiousity, Self Awareness and the Ability to Empathize.
They wait for someone to explain what they just heard to formulate an opinion -never asked questions in school, or even thought any up privately and certianly never Looked something Up Just for the Hell of it
They lack introspection as to 'is this working for me or should I try something else', mainly because they lack the Self esteem to challenge themselves- To be able to Change an Exterior force, or a counterproductive preconception.
And Probabably the result is the inability to empathize with others, since you can't even empathize with yourself. Misery Loves Company.
Perfect Example
85 yr old woman is voting for McCain, and States she's not worried about another Depression, She lived through One she can survive another.
First she is not Curious about what each candidate will do for Her in regards to Medicare or Social Security.
She does not look back on thoe years and remember the hardship it caused, to herself, her parents.
Nor Does she empathize with those Who did suffer during the Last Depression, Nor give a shit about how it will effect even her Kids, Grandkids, Great Grandkids.
Hell it seems she is content in the Idea that Her Bucket List is almost completed- so Fuck ya All!
Something else the Neo CON right has Ruined in America....The sense of Generational Obligatory Continuity.

They are fascists at heart, waving their crosses and flags.
Our only hope is to educate the young. Progressives must get involved with government at the local and state levels.

real conservatives(G.Washington, J.Adams, Jefferson, Taft, Holmes Eisenhower and Ron Paul) have always been leery of a large military. Real conservatives(see the libertarian site of Bob Barr, chroniclesmagazine.org, antiwar.com(Justin Raimondo), Buchanan's American Conservative and Lewrockwell.com) opposed Iraq, are fearful of an Iran War, are troubled by Afghanistan, and see through the zionist schemes of Israel which McCain, Bush and Obama cannot do enough to serve.

So let's unite to stop the warmongers and Council of Foreign Relations elitists under whoever wins. On foregin policy, there is a proliberty consensus. We can also use the hundreds of billions flowing to the Pentagon to take care of veterans and use the bulk of the rest to pay off the federal debt which is the real threat to our security.

What are the chances that enough people will perceive the threat to democracy and liberty (for the common people)and actually do something about it. I am appalled that I was the first person to Digg Naomi's article, and a previous article was only Dugg a few times. Most people are just not interested enough to start doing the hard work of realizing that what they were taught in school (that democracy has no enemies in this country) is not true. The evidence is substantial that a coup has been gradually made more doable by the concerted actions of the neocon community and the Bush Administration. The election of a Democrat in November will only serve to delay the satisfaction of the ambitions of the hard right, who want to secure for themselves an endless regime of privilege and power, not to mention rapture. A powerful rejection of their scheme by Progressive and Conservative voters is the only thing that can buy enough time to unravel the plot and turn the nation back to the path of "liberty and justice for ALL"! I have read recently that Sarah Palin is feeling depressed because of the polls. I have been feeling depressed for eight years or more because of the threat to democracy, and I can only hope that Naomi can keep her head above water long enough for the electorate to pull the plug and turn off the tap in the regressive bathtub they are trying to drown us all in.

I'd gathered that much, dear friend,
that your focus is more narrow than
my broadly conspiratorial approach.

It's just that nobody I'm able to
find among libertarians has dared
to report that this whole financial
debacle is not product of mis-
management and/or stupidity,
but of long-range planning by
one-world conspirators.

This is a massive, no-holds-barred
rush to impose world government.

I ask folks to extrapolate from one
clue among many: Greenspan
had openly, publicly advised pro-
spective home-buyers to take out
an ARM, in 2006.

He not only had violated his chair-
manship duties by giving such ad-
vice, but had dropped a HUGE
clue that the Federal Reserve
wished to create a MASSIVE
financial collapse - worldwide! -
so that it could gather far more
power and influence in our
day-to-day business than it
would otherwise have--if such
an extreme expansion of
risk-drenched home owner-
ship had not occurred!

Paulson has become KING of
banking, wielding unprece-
dented power through our
so-called "we the people"
Congress!

The Founding Fathers would
have raised an army to stop
such a thing.

And so it goes in our deadly
Orwellian Age; and there's
no place to hide, Bill.

First, you put up two candidates (Hillary and McCain) who might be controllable or at the very least, complicit in your plans. One Problem: Hillary loses the nomination, so we go to plan B.

Plan B: You put up McCain the Senile and let him dwaddle around for two months doing nothing to secure the presidency, then let him get serious (?) by having him choose his own VP candidate, as long as it is not Lieberman, a Jew. Nazi's still do not like Jews, you know. So he picks the most unqualified person around, but she looks like pathetic eye-candy, has radical religious views that will appeal to ultra-theological fanatics, and acts like trailer trash. Now you have the losing ticket you need!

Your opponent is really looking like he will win the election, so your party then starts the collapse of the economy so that the media is distracted from what you are really doing - bringing home troops to serve in times of crisis against the American people. But, your opponent comes through the crisis and members of your own party are not happy with your handling of it either. Your candidate meanwhile is going off the deep end more rapidly with each passing day, while the VP candidate shows she is a team player by fomenting racial hatred and fear of terrorists in crowds directed at your opponent.

Next you start sowing the seeds of anger over a stolen election - one mind you that has not even happened yet, but that is a minor technicality. You make it appear that your opponent has been encouraging, even financing, voter registration fraud in order to steal the election. IN addition, you have you loyalists in various key states start voter purges and other voter suppression campaigns, supposedly in order to prevent voter fraud, so that people will not look too closely at how your electronic polling machines are actually set up to work.

You then sit back and wait as the hate, the anger, the fear rises within your parties lowest common denominator - the right-wing, racist religious fanatic and ignorant nutjobs who think they are God's answer for American values. You also closely monitor the rising anger among your opponent's followers who fill that this election is about to be stolen from them because they see what you have been doing, but they are waiting to see what happens on Nov. 4th.

You have all the pieces in place now for civil strive on a national level no matter who wins. So you sit back and let Sarah Palin and the lawyers do their jobs while you wait. If you have played your cards right, on Nov. 5th when the challenges start and the people are ready to explode, you make a statement that is guaranteed to throw the nation's citizens at each other's throats, and let it happen.

At that time, you declare a "catastrophic emergency" to quell the unrest, declare the national election results fraudulent, and declare martial law until such time as you deem necessary. And thus you secure for yourself, your VP, and your friends a nation! Am I close, Mr. Bush, Mr. Rove? I think I am, and I will be watching closely.

Michelle Buchman (R-Minnesota) declared that most of the liberals in both this nation and in Congress were leftists and anti-American. This, coupled with your VP's hate speech, goes beyond 1st Amendment guarantees and you know it, but of course, you will be protected from your actions by a President who needs your insane complicity. Senator McCain, your true feelings about this country - your anger and rage at her not rescuing you all those years ago, your feelings of inadequacy in her service as your father probably reminded you often - are showing as you work through your campaign to finally tear Her apart. Congratulations, sir, you may have finally proven you are better than your father - he only commanded troops, you destroyed a nation with a little help from your friends!

Many thanks to all the wonderful alternet posters, especially to americansheep (posted at 721 AM) Unfortunately I reside 2500 miles away from my daughter, so I have been doing my best to advise her. I, also have been told that here in Florida the hierarchy of the Catholic church is also ordering priests to warn parishioners not to vote for Barack. (BTW I do like the camcorder idea)

Good point, wrong audience.

There ARE libertarian conservatives, who are extremely unhappy with Bush and the present direction. Some are probably even in the military, where they could make a big difference.

But Alternet won't reach them. Where else is this being published?

Conservative fundamentalist "Christians" will be the shock troops of the take over and provide the spark for the 3rd ID 1st brigade to deploy on our streets.

Do you think these people can be reasoned with? Dream on.

Here's a rant I send along to my friends last weekend after I heard the garbage at the McCain rallies.

Just as I suspected the wing nuts are starting to lose it now that Sen. Obama has opened up a significant lead among several polls.

FEAR FEAR FEAR! Obama is a closet Muslim that associates with terrorists! Socialism! My god Socialism! What will we do?

It makes me just sick. These are the people who are so easily manipulated and live in their reptilian brains. They're the ones who'll don brown shirts and march down the street smashing windows to persecute minorities. "TREASON!" "KILL HIM!" "TERRORIST!" (all quotes from McCain supporters at his rallies).

If there were any doubts as to why I've chosen to arm myself it is because of people who believe garbage like this. People are angry and I am one of them but focus your anger.

Wall Street speculation is what got us into this mess. Credit default swap agreements? WTF? Credit derivatives? Huh? Explain that one. Commercial paper markets? Is there any doubt we're living in a corporate fascist oligarchy?

People should be afraid of unbridled Capitalism and "free markets" that bray and whine when they fail for a giant bailout. It's a "free market" until they need help and we get left holding the bag! I want to see "perp walks" for these executives who make hundreds of millions of dollars looting companies that lose billions of dollars and shift the burden for their failure to the tax payer.

Socialism will end up saving these companies and markets that are "too big to fail". We'll end up re-regulating the capitalists to protect ourselves from their excesses and paying to clean up their mess. I want my tax dollars to build roads and water treatment plants & paying fire fighters not subsidizing the private jet flights of CEO's

Naomi, what is a conservative?
Posted by: marid on Oct 18, 2008 12:59 PM

I see very few real Conservatives in the Republican Party Hierarchy. The basic tenets of Conservatism are simple: Pay your bills, Stay out of my life, Stay out of other countries business. By these ideals many liberals are much more conservative than those who take upon themselves the Raiment of Republicanism.

These periodic wars are a necessary part of our national beliefs. Gotta indoctrinate each generation into the Cult of Militarism. It is very difficult to admit you were fooled. Reason goes out the window in the face of fanaticism.

Keep selling it to the masses. Endlessly repeat the lies such as the Fairy Tale of Free Market Economics. It does not exist past me trading my tomatoes for my neighbors peppers. All other markets are managed and controlled and always have been. The trick is who controls them.

I see the classic Stepford Wife Michelle Bachman using another of the big trump cards of the Right. She pulled out the card of, "He's Unpatriotic" yesterday in one of her fairy tale interviews. That is nearly buck trump in any game in the US. Don't question our military actions in any way.

Of course Naomi be careful of the Uber Trump Card, "The Bible Says So."

The police state is coming and the Sheeple don't know or don't want to make the effort to stop it. Won't be long and we won't be able to stop it. The Prison camps are in place (check REX 84), Posse Comitatus is null and void, we now have our own Hessians (private armies for hire, Blackwater, Habeus Corpus is just barely alive, we torture, elections are stolen in front of our eyes, as I have been telling people for years, "WE are in a race to the bottom, and picking up speed."

But alas the American dolts all encompassing ignorance seems to be carrying the day. I fear for my children and my country. Pax Americana is alive and well and eatin the country and the world.

The fight isn't with 'terrorists' it's with the wealthy greed barons and the politicians, military and cops they own and order about like little puppets. The wealthy have always had to create armies and enforcement groups not to save lives or protect the public at large but to save their richie rich asses just in case the rest of us have found out their vile plans for the rest of us.

We have ,and their ass is grass. The best way to get back at rich folks is to make them poor folks. That's just what's going on. No one is spending money, buying bullshit Ipods,Iphones or
greatly over priced cars houses and boats.
We have Wal-Mart begging for our business.
We don't have to fire a single bullet to bring down these idiots. Just shut off their cash flow. Take you money out of the bank, sell you worthless stocks, ditch that 401K.

Then start putting people into office, locally at first, that will slash police budgets, then folks can be sent to DC to chop down military budgets. If that don't work,we start making all their gear very unsafe. Non-bulletproof vests, guns that don't work, cars that don't run.

If this country wishes to make the people of this country their enemy, then by the Declaration of Independance I tell you all this country has become our enemy and it's operation as a government should be put to an end. This is the very reason we have the 'Right to posess and bear arms' to protect the people form a corrupted governance. Let loose the Tarring and Featherings, there are Tyrants skins to be hung on Liberty's tree.

Dear Christians,

You have a book. It’s about freedom. It’s about Moses leading slaves to freedom. Later, it’s about a prophet speaking the Law to King David, because kings aren’t above the Law. Still later, it’s about reforming Judaism so that the Law is read every Sabbath to everyone, so that no king or merchant may be above the Law. Remember all of this when you talk about freedom. It’s your heritage, and you should spread it to others. What would your fathers think if your generation of Christians was spreading corruption, greed and dictatorships?

Your book says, “Thou shall not steal”. How do you feel about seeing the national treasury robbed? That was your children’s inheritance.

“Thou shall not kill.” How do you feel about the government training Central American death squads at Fort Benning, GA? Is this your own gift to God? Is this your country?

Israel’s great hope for freedom was the Prince of Peace. “All who live by the sword shall surely die by the sword.” Is that statement good enough for Jesus but times have changed for you? Why the big difference?

How do you feel about running an occupation in Iraq that has now driven out almost all of the 600,000 native Christians from Iraq?

Jesus taught that you respect the Samaritan. How do you feel about a baggy-lipped caricature of Barack Obama being displayed on a spoof of Aunt Jemima Waffles, called “Obama Waffles”, at an evangelical political caucus for three days straight? The box called Senator Obama a Muslim.

The Book also says, “Thou shall not bear false witness”. How do you feel about our electoral campaigns in general? Do you eventually want to see the nature of the electoral campaigns changed so that exactly two candidates aren’t mudslinging all the time?

The rich man ignored Lazarus at his gate. Your government cares little for the children who manufacture dog toys for your dog. People toil in near slavery for you, and their children toil in near-slavery for your children. How long will this be true? Do these nearly enslaved hungry people have to sit at your gate before you wake up?

Does God’s work have to be our own, or can we just tell God that we were too busy?

Things are not going according to plan for the New World Order. Pooh on them. The revolution isn't coming - it is here. It is now. And Goodness is prevailing. That, my dears, is why Evil is so busy over there to the right, masquerading as a ProLifer. There are dark days ahead, for sure, but there is a light at the end of this tunnel. We will reconfigure around the Bill of Rights - the original, unsullied one - again. It is so easy , and so dangerous, to lose heart in these times. Do not give comfort to the enemy! Have courage, share with those who are even in worse shape, write to your newspapers, rail at your electees, and VOTE!

The real reason the American left needs to persuade the right
Posted by: blogbooks on Oct 18, 2008 10:59 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The fact is that the American left is completely powerless against a violent police state. The preaching of non-violence as a way of life has left you impotent in the face of your soon-to-be masters.

You abhorrence of self defense and weaponry has driven the American citizenry to the brink of disarmament. Obama will bring this full circle with another gun ban and disarmament of the people.

You need the right because the right is where the warriors sit. It is where those that have the means, ability, and willingness to fight are located. The left is full of yuppy house wives, scrawny young men from middle-upper income families with too much time on their hands and too much resin in their lungs, and other coward of every shade.

The problem is, the people you are appealing to are HAPPY that this is coming. They want to see protesters (you, leftists) beaten in the streets, murdered, and raped. That brings joy to their hearts.

There have never been a right wing revolution waged by the people. When the "right wing" takes over a nation it is called a military coup. This is fought by the military, the police, and their supporters.

On the other hand, many left wing revolutions have been fought all over the world since the French revolution. This can never happen in America as long as the left embraces disarmament of the people as a path to ... whatever you think it is a path to.

You want your freedom? Secure it by the only means possible - by the means our forefathers intended us to secure it, force.

Steal Back the vote
Posted by: cori on Oct 19, 2008 10:37 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Mark Crispin Miller, He's a leading media studies scholar at New York University, where he's teaching a course this semester on "How to steal an election." Interviewed on Bill Moyers, the Journal PBS on the net. See the whole interview
MARK CRISPIN MILLER: Well, I'm afraid that what we've seen in this decade, in this century is unprecedented. This upcoming election specifically is two sets of activities. One is vote suppression. It means various dirty tricks and tactics and legal devices used to shrink the size of the electorate before Election Day. For example, interfering with registration drives or making them vulnerable to partisan challenges or passing laws requiring certain kinds of documentation at polling places. Like the Jim Crow laws. Caging voters, which is sending them registered letters with forms that if they don't fill them out, their names will be stricken from the voter rolls. Voter purges. There's a whole huge menu of extremely ingenious devices now being used I think with unprecedented brazenness to try to make the electorate as small as possible in advance of Election Day. It makes a certain sense to try to see to it that those voters can't vote. That's one set of activities that I worry about. Also fraud by using the computerized voting systems which we now have in place in at least 80% of the country those systems through black box technology, precisely because it is so technical and it's so opaque and it's all run by private companies, private companies that have close ties to the Republican Party, the use of this kind of voting apparatus is extremely worrisome and something that we should be watching very carefully.
What is happening with ACORN is a first-class propaganda drive. The entities you've mentioned are all participating in it - Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, John McCain, the McCain campaign, despite the inconvenient fact that John McCain gave the keynote speech at ACORN's annual conference in 2006. We won't talk about that. The fact is that what we're hearing about ACORN is, without exception, false. It is false. ACORN itself flagged the suspicious voter registration forms that caused this whole thing to begin in Las Vegas about ten days ago. It brought those forms to the attention of the secretary of state who then turned around and said, "Ah-ha, evidence that you're conspiring to commit voter fraud." CAGING” It's really very simple. The Republican Party, in a particular state, will get a list of the names and addresses of Democrats and send them letters that look sort of like junk mail, you know? Often they'll have windows in the envelope, the kind of thing that people are going to be inclined to throw away. And if people don't open those envelopes and take out forms that are in them and fill them out and send them in, their names will be stricken from the voter rolls on that basis. They've also been known to send these kinds of forms to people who are overseas serving in the military. Well, they're not home to check their mail, so if they don't fill out the forms, their names are stricken from the voter roll.
This is the right on which all our other rights depend, as Tom Paine said. Nothing is more important than this right. This is the right for which millions of our forebears have shed their blood, have died. This is what keeps us free. Only this. If we lose the right to pick our representatives and to get rid of the government when we don't like it anymore, if we don't have that right, if we don't have that power, we're as good as slaves.
Go to "Video the Vote" and they will give you a camera to take to the polls and interview voters.
RULES” VOTE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.. DON’T MAIL IN YOUR BALLOT.REGISTER AND BRING YOUR ID. Even if you have already voted go back to the poll staion just to show big numbers.

Bush/Cheney have been desperately trying for years to destroy Posse Comitatus. They want to be able to kill Americans in the streets of the US with our own soldiers. This would be the first major step to making our great nation into a Fascist Dictatorship (just like Prescott Bush always wanted). Second would be the ultimate October Surprise, giving them the excuse to suspend the election (which they already have the ability to do, thanks to Bush's secret Presidential Directives).

I've been telling all my friends for months now the same things Tom Degan has recently been writing on his blog.

Don't believe it? Wait and see. I hope I'm wrong.
Divide, Distort, Distract. Prescott would be proud.

Now drop all of the above from your mind and allow what remains to consume you.

man in the present day and age has and is not learning from past mistakes. remove everything and begin anew but this time do not follow your thoughts. remain rooted in stillness and identify only with that which remains motionless.

Now, start your fear based attacks, prove me wrong until there is nothing left to shatter and then remain still.

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? After all, you knew ahead of time that those bluecaps were out at night for no good purpose. And you could be sure ahead of time that you'd be cracking the skull of a cutthroat. Or what about the Black Maria sitting out there on the street with one lonely chauffeur -- what if it had been driven off or its tires spiked. The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!"

Here is an interesting piece I came across in a cult network marketing book I read in the early '90's - Richard Poe's WAVE 3. At Chapter 10 he tries to predict the future of network marketing in America. Harry and Dick are having a discussion about rebates in the year 2010. Harry asks Dick has he seen "that new movie" where marauding drugs gangs wipe out Manhattan with a neutron bomb and then the ATA retaliates against its citizens by declaring martial law and throwing millions of suspect "terrorists" into "detention camps all over America". Poe's predictions about the universal success of network marketing proved to be baseless - let's hope his predictions about the other stuff are also wide of the mark.

Is Naomi for real? Does she REALLY believe that we're on the verge of a police state? I guess I'm not very sharp because I've missed it. These masses of protesters that have been arrested (political prisoners?) -- where are they? These rights that have been lost -- what are they? I guess you can twist things to your liking (i.e Bush's private army), but that doesn't change the fact that our rights are well intact. We have due process and rule of law. We have a military that takes its order from civilians. We have free elections and free transfer of power.

I suppose Naomi has to come up with some crisis or "cabal" in order to justify her existence, but it would be nice if she could be more creative next time.

"We do not have a single combat brigade at home in reserve, ready for an unexpected crisis. Our National Guard and Reserves have only half the equipment levels they need, hampering their ability to respond to crises, foreign and domestic."

I say if these things come to pass, We should be preparing for a revolution. Thomas Jefferson believed a revolt every now and then was a good thing. The mechanisms are in place to stifle dissent and try to control us. We must look at revolution if these things come to pass. Many people will side with those who would suppress dissent. We must be wary. Revolution is a last resort, but the Bush Cabal will legitmize it if they take over.

I have no doubt the coporatocracy is watching. My statement urging a revolution will be seen as a
threat by them. Please pay attention! I believe I will be harassed and stifled by government agents. When I am arrested,or marginalized or whatever means to stop my dissent they will be watching us all. I urge all to read the Declaration of Independence. Think of it when the undermining of democracy is taking place.
I pray we will not be fooled by the powers that be. Hear the voices crying in the wilderness. Heed their warnings.

After WW1 there was veterans march on Washington, DC because the government refused to follow through with promised assistance. The Army used tanks to clear them out.

A FRESH LOOK AT SENATOR PATRICK LEAHY, senator from VT

I have been voting for Senator Patrick Leahy for several years. I constantly email him important articles and call his office to express my concerns. I get the occasional letter back supporting these concerns and it ends there. In the mean time I decided to look up his voting record and found that although he did vote for pro abortion legislation and humanitarian aid, a very large portion of his votes supported vast military spending. The senator voted for Bush’s missile system that breaks the ABM treaty where missiles will be placed on the Russian border. This is in and of itself a very dangerous effort that could very well start a new cold war with Russia. Imagine if Russia put missiles on the Mexican border! He also voted for a 355.4 billion dollar defense budget and much, much more. All the trillions being spent, in a climate of no accountability, is bankrupting our nation and is a threat to our economy and our national security. National also refers to the state of the nation and we the people who live here. Accountability should be at the top of the list of what our representatives fight for. This has not happened with Leahy. Senator Leahy has been there for a long time and I feel we need new representatives. Welch, who is new, has not done much either. If progressive means those who are on the side of the people, and our jobs, wages, healthcare, rights, protections, environment, and over site of how our tax dollars are being spent, then I want to vote for these kinds of representatives. Voters need to get ride of representatives who do not live up to our expectations and protect us. We need to look at track records and vote for the Al Gore’s and those like Robert Kennedy Jr., who are fighting as hard as they can, to protect our vote as Republicans are vigorously trying to sabotage it. If our own representatives cannot even protect our vote, which they are not, what good are they?

the failed economy of today is the direct result of the economic policies of the democratic Clinton regime and Alan Greenspan, what happened in the late 90’s as far as the US economic policies is the main reason for the downrurn seen a decade later. Ecomnomies are not driven by changes made a year or two ago but a result of changes with repurecussions a decade later. Which is why, we are in this dire strait, due to the democratic socialist policies of Clinton which were put into play by one Alan greenspan

Naomi,

Activating 3000-4000 troops (1st Brigade, 3rd ID) is not enough to take over America and this isn't a modern version of Seven Days in May. Maybe someone in Washington is thinking safety and riots if Obama is taken out by some wingnut.

We've done it before. Four days into the Detroit riots in 1967, the 82nd Airborne Division was activated and sent overnight to Detroit. What most people don't know is that the rioters had taken over an armory near Indian Village and had 50 caliber machine guns. The Detroit police were way overmatched.

You make be correct and this may be the start of a military takeover but I don't think so since much of the Pentagon and the CIA have had it with the Bush/Cheney/McCain crew.

Let's hope the wingnut is a bad shot.
