Donovan joins MLS stars for AS Roma match
US all-time scoring leader Landon Donovan was added Friday to the Major League Soccer All-Star Game lineup for Wednesday's match between the US league's elite talent and AS Roma.
The 31-year-old forward, who has made a strong return to form this month with the Americans in the Gold Cup event for North American nations, was selected by MLS commissioner Don Garber to replace Irish star and Los Angeles Galaxy teammate Robbie Keane, who is out with a left hip flexor strain, in the MLS lineup.
Donovan, in his 13th MLS season and 13th consecutive MLS All-Star Game, was part of a record-tying fifth MLS championship club last December when he helped the Galaxy win the MLS crown.
He then took a four-month break from the sport, needing to rest his mind and body.
After returning to the Galaxy, Donovan scored three goals and set up six others in 13 matches for the Galaxy but missed US World Cup qualifying matches.
He was given a chance to show what he could do this month on the national team in the Gold Cup and has responded with seven goals and key passes to set up seven more over six games as the unbeaten Americans advanced to Sunday's title match against Panama.
"Landon is a great addition to the MLS All-Star team," said All-Stars coach Peter Vermes.
"Obviously his form is fantastic right now and his impact and representation of MLS throughout his career is immeasurable."
