Obama's First Year: It Ain't No Crystal Staircase

By Robert L. Borosage, Campaign for America's Future. Posted November 7, 2009.

Obama will increasingly have to choose -- whether to hold to his vision and raise the stakes, or compromise his vision to cut the deal.

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners...

- Langston Hughes

Barack Obama is a leader of great capacities and great contradictions. Perhaps the measure of his capacities is the magnitude of his contractions. He is a man of exceptional grace. But the grace misleads; this is a politician of intense ambition, discipline and grit. He understands and wields the power of the word. But his soaring oratory misleads, for his temperament is moderate; his predilection is for compromise. He rouses a new generation to politics, but prefers to cut the deals in the backrooms. He calls us to a new direction, then staffs his administration's team with the acolytes of the old ideas he scorns.

One year is too soon to measure a president or assess an administration. Hell, this administration has less than half of its political appointees in place. But here in brief are six propositions on Barack Obama's first year:

1. This is the most progressive president since Lyndon Johnson.

His election ushered in what could be the greatest era for progressive reform since the 1960s. After fighting for years simply to stave off further horrors, we're now fighting over how to get to comprehensive health care, how to address global warming, calling the world to move towards nuclear disarmament. It is a big difference and should not be ignored.

Obama leads this wave. Listen to the music of the administration. Time and time again, on the economy, on civil rights, on disarmament - Barack Obama sounds a transformative call. His soaring words show us that another world is possible. The hard slog of his first months reveals just how hard it will be to get there. This ain't no crystal staircase.

2. This president seeks to do big things.

This isn't Bill Clinton running on school uniforms and TV monitors. Defying conventional wisdom, in his first year, Obama summoned the country and the Congress to address challenges that can no longer be ignored: a recovery act to stave of potential depression, comprehensive health care reform, progress on climate change, financial reform, new engagement with the world, and yet to come - immigration reform, empowering workers, and more. Powerful interests are challenged. The arguments are brutal. But the stakes are at least worth the game.

3. He is a man of the establishment, not the left.

Barack Obama is an establishment reformer, not, despite the ravings of Rush and Beck, a radical in any way. To a remarkable degree, Obama has chosen not to include leading progressives in his administration. Foreign policy is transformed, but only from the lunacy of the neocons to the "realism" of the national security mandarins. Economic policy is rescued from conservative supply side quackery, but entrusted to the dubious aegis of Bob Rubin and Goldman Sachs protégés. Not surprisingly, the populist outrage of Americans at the arrogance of Wall Street barons profiting from the taxpayers' bailout caught this administration by surprise.

4. He is weakened by his moderation, not his boldness.

The president is chided for having tried to do too much. Progressives are told that our disappointments come from exaggerated expectations. In fact, the reality is somewhat different. His accomplishments far exceed the expectations of the beltway chattering classes but fail to meet the needs of the moment.

How does it feel to be duped Robert? Up to this point you have been savaging real progressives with your sanctimonious pap.

You've woken up, wait until your first cup of coffee. Then you will see just what the Obama Administration has been up to.

Listen to Dennis Kucinich for just one minute ...

Why is it we have Finite Resources for Health Care but Unlimited Money for War?

And then read about what Obama has really been up to and where it is leading ...

Can You Hear Us Now?

And be sure to tell Katrina Van Fluffle at The Neo-Nation ...

Out of thin air did this 'manchurian candidate' appear.

So well packaged, presented and positioned no public figure heretofore in history could have dreamed of a more indulged media ride.

Now we know why Emanuel put his thumb to his nose and wiggled his fingers.

Obama is More Dangerous Than Bush and Cheney.

With Bush & Cheney, what you saw is what you got.

It was completely obvious to anyone with a braincell, regardless of their political views that Dick Cheney Really Was as Evil as He Appeared. Cheney didn't even try to hide it. You could almost see the blood dripping down from his teeth as he spoke, whilst his eyes said it all.

Obama meanwhile is portrayed quite accurately in the picture is this article.

He has come out and spoken with some most beautiful words over the last 3 years. He has said a great deal that needed to be said.

But words amount to nothing without CHANGE.

Obama has changed nothing for the better. What has he actually achieved to make this World a Better Place? For awhile we may have thought the World was a better place, because of the Words he said and the fact that Americans elected him - which in itself was quite wonderful.

Now it may not be Obama's fault. It is entirely possible that the Position of President of The United States no longer has any real power whatsover.

It maybe that the Military Industrial Complex has completely taken over power, not just in the US, but throughout most of the World. It maybe that virtually all Governments across the World are Puppets of this most monstrous evil.

If so, the only hope we have is from change from within the evil. Maybe the evil will destroy itself like a Brain Cancer. More likely it will destroy all of us.

I never realised The World could be so evil, and so many people ignorant and asleep and doing nothing about it.

Tony

This article is official propaganda and nothing more.

I stopped reading at "His accomplishments in one year are impressive."

One shudders to think what would be consider unimpressive if the current mess of two wars, bailout for the rich, botched healthcare and insufficient stimulus are labeled as impressive.

But keep wrapping the turd in shiny tinfoil and peddling it out. Bambam the Magnificent NEEDS the second term and facts be damned.

One has to believe that progressives are dumber than a bag of hammers...

...as this president has only removed his lips from the hind quarters of Goldman Sachs long enough to lie. He's put lobbyists in his regime, continued the wars, continued the Patriot Act, continued support for the Israeli colonization of the West Bank...He gave Wall Street trillions and indirect subsidies-- greenstamps--to buy automobiles.

This clown is the creature of Wall Street--and lets not forget the progressives of the past who gave us the income tax and the federal reserve and helped elect Woodrow Wilson who 'kept us out of war'...until he was re-elected. There are two four letter words to describe this kind of 'progressive'--'dupe' and 'fool'.

Not surprisingly, the populist outrage of Americans at the arrogance of Wall Street barons profiting from the taxpayers' bailout caught this administration by surprise.

Caught by surprise? They don't give a damn for the little people, only Wall Street fat cats and a certain SLC.

Obama's not only continued GW's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he's starting new ones in Pakistan and Somalia... Progressive?

He's mouthed some pretty phrases about closing Gitmo, then lets the building of other CIA torture sites, like Bagram, Afghanistan go on.

He's probably set a record for breaking campaign promises, and yet fools still believe in "Change."

Wake up Bobbie, our government is being led by NWO shills who will do anything to stay in power.... even attack America, like they did on 9/11 and Obama is right in the middle.

Stop being lulled to sleep by his charismatic personage. A lot of people are still being fooled by this 'Pied Piper,' don't be one of them.

Obama is behind "Comprehensive Health Care Reform?" Like the kind written by health insurance and Big Pharma companies?

Get a grip Bobbie and stop writing puff pieces about a man that doesn't exist.

Obama is no SDSer!

It's certainly abundantly clear today that when Obama told us, before the election, that Bill Ayers of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) had absolutely no influence on him, that he was telling the truth ---- because Obama has sure as hell not been doing anything to fight for a 'democratic society' (against economic oppression, racism, imperialist wars, etc. etc.).

Obama never mentioned anything, before we 'gave him' our votes, about the ruling-elite corporate/financial imperialist war-machine, racist tyranny, and working-class economic inequality that SDS fought against in the late 1960's --- and which, in the last 40 years, has gotten worse.

Obama was being truthful with us when he totally ignored the very existence of this ruling-elite corporate/financial Empire that controls our country by hiding behind the facade of its two-party 'Vichy' sham of democracy, and he was being totally truthful when he said nothing about this Empire that he himself was auditioning to become the best 'front-man' for.

It's just that we were too stupid, before the election, to ask him, "Hey, what about this Empire that is killing our country and the world? Will you represent this deceitful and hidden corporate/financial Empire or will you represent us?"

We never asked him about which side he was on in our battle with Empire --- so he wasn't lying when he said, and now has done, exactly nothing.

Obama is no MLK

Many say Obama “needs to be pushed” by the comparison with FDR, but he really needs to be pushed into courageous action by the comparison with MLK.

Obama’s crucial decisions on Afghanistan --- and ‘Beyond Afghanistan’ --- on EMPIRE.

All the media talk is about the crucial decision that Obama faces in Afghanistan. Whether to give in to the generals, and allow the war to expand.

But while the intense speculation regarding Obama’s decision about expanding the Afghanistan War --- the phony designed-to-be-expanded ‘Global War on Terrorism’, into a likely war all across Central Asia --- is on everyone’s mind, Obama has a multiplicity of other policy decisions.

Has any leader ever had such a problem in dealing with critical domestic issues that mean so much to him, and yet had such risks to his plans caused by a foreign war he would rather not have to speak about?

Like Obama, Rev. Martin Luther King was confronted with a similar monumental decision about whether to speak-out against the imperialist war ‘abroad’, that was grinding up the working-class sons of both black and white Americans, or to continue focusing on his most heart-felt problem ‘at home’ of inequality and racism.

For more than a year, Rev. King kept his focus on the racial battle at home, and would not be detoured by addressing the combination of multiple issues that would inevitably spring from taking-on the crimes of imperialist foreign war, domestic racism, and the ‘class-warfare’ that linked these crimes of Empire.

Finally, on April 4th, 1967, and at the Riverside Church, Dr. King decided that it was “A Time to Break Silence” not only about Vietnam, but Beyond Vietnam, and to speak the truth about the nature of Empire and the class-war that Empire always uses to maintain its unfair, unjust, and un-democratic control over the indivisible political-economics of power both ‘abroad’ and ‘at home’.

Hopefully, Obama will reach the same monumental decision as Dr. King – and even more hopefully, average Americans of all colors will respond to a seminal 'outing' of Empire by recognizing their common humanity, their common-wealth, their common ‘public interest’ in democracy (against the ‘private interest’ of Empire), and by treating a 21st century messenger and leader against Empire differently than Dr. King was treated.

Obama is a company man
Posted by: chlamor on Nov 7, 2009 5:48 PM

Obama is a company man. He knows the language, the subtle and overt signals, and emits them like a beacon. Ruling circles have gotten the message, and that is why corporate media have made him a contender, and corporate billfolds have financed him. The "skinny kid" made his bones at the Democratic National Convention, in August, 2004, while he was still an Illinois senatorial candidate - a shoo-in against the hopeless and deranged Black Republican Alan Keyes. Obama put all white fears to rest: "There is no white America. There is no black America. There is no Latino America. There is no Asian America. There is only the United States of America." Hallelujah!

The scam of this still-new century enthralls and envelopes the nation, a narrowly-packaged political farce in which political twins Republicrats and Democans pretend they are not joined at the hip on every public policy issue that has been allowed to enter the corporate media-vetted discourse: health care, Iraq, trade. Even these points of (non)contention disappear in the din of purely commercial marketing mantras with infinitely malleable meanings: "Change," "Hope," "Reform."

When no real change is offered - when both parties are wedded to a lingering presence in Iraq and to reestablishing U.S. hegemony in the world; when insurance and drug companies are left virtually untouched by tepid forays into broadening health care coverage; and when neither offers a whisper of an idea on halting the corporate-engineered global Race to the Bottom, then it is certain that, although "change" may come, it will be at the direction of the rich who have brought the nation and planet to the very brink of catastrophe.

But then, Obama would never have risen so quickly and remarkably to his current position of dominant media favor and national prominence if he was anything like the egalitarian and democratic “progressive” that some liberals and leftists imagine.
