Corporate Media Playing the Hate Game, Aiming at Both Obama and Clinton

By Adele M. Stan, AlterNet. Posted August 1, 2009.

Media bigs seem to have reached the conclusion that hatred sells, so they're embracing their inner sexists and inner racists.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

UPDATE: Since this story was filed, the Washington Post pulled from its Web site the Mouthpiece Theater video featuring Dana Milbank's "Mad Bitch" comment about Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In response to questions from TPM, Washington Post Communications Director Kris Coratti issued a statement explaining that the piece was removed because there was "a section of video that went too far."

The TPM report does not mention whether the statement addressed any disciplinary action for any involved; nor does the statement appear to contain an apology for an act of outright sexism by two of the paper's star columnists.

In the meantime, Chris Cillizza, who appeared in the video alongside Milbank, was featured today on the roundtable of CNN's State of the Union program, and was not asked one question about the "Mad Bitch" video.

Note that the video embedded in our article does not click through to the Washington Post Web site; it was captured by the good folks at Media Matters.

If the presidential campaign of 2008 was the mainstream media's teachable moment, it seems the wrong lesson was learned. Instead of the corrective soul-searching one would hope for among executives and editors at major media outlets as their on-air figures grappled with their inner sexists and inner racists during prime time, media bigs seem to have reached the conclusion that hatred sells. So they're selling it hard.

The latest exhibit is a Washington Post video (sponsored by the oil company, BP), in which one of the paper's A-list columnists suggests that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton be served a brew called Mad Bitch during a visit to the White House.

Add that to a month that saw CNN's Lou Dobbs advancing the cause of far-right-wingers who suggested, despite the evidence, that President Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen, and the assertion by Fox's Glenn Beck that Obama "hates white people."

And don't forget the racist commentary written by MSNBC's Patrick J. Buchanan, who was rewarded for his invective with a paid appearance on the popular Rachel Maddow Show. (The question is not why Maddow had him on the show -- she adroitly took Buchanan down -- but why Buchanan remains on the MSNBC payroll after calling Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor a "quota queen" and an "affirmative action hire" who advocates for "tribal justice".)

Campaign 2008 was something of a litmus test for the mainstream media, exposing through the gaffes of media personalities, the depth of racism and sexism in society at large.

With a white woman and a black man both vying to be the first-of-their-kind presidential nominee of a major party, media figures often found themselves at a loss when women's groups or civil rights organizations chiding them for saying things that seemed to be absolutely normal in their white, and largely male, world.

From Chris Matthews' statement that Clinton only got to the Senate "because her husband messed around," to the frequent description of Obama as "articulate," media figures got a swift education from the backlash their unwitting condescension and prejudice garnered.

Unless you‘re an African-American woman, the hapless talking heads, despite their hefty salaries, were stand-ins for the rest of us, often not knowing how to talk about a leading contender for the most powerful job in world because he or she hailed from one or another class of humanity whose experience of prejudice and oppression lay beyond our own. (If you need an argument other than equal opportunity for bringing more African-American women into the upper reaches of media, the last presidential campaign should top the list.)

Bottoms up!

As far as I'm concerned, recent mainstream media has been very, very unsupportive of liberal attempts to "change" the direction of the ship of state. If there was a "mandate", it's been validated, but resisted as never before. Of course we know who owns m.s.m., and who advertises in/on them, and its apparent that the closer to the possibility of new laws regarding virtually conceivable aspect of American society and all of it's resources, the lower into the gutter the opposition will go. It's amazing how low they can go. It's what they do. And without a thought or care for the lot of the average American or the sustainability of the nation and by extension, this world we share with 6 billion other humans.
However, with the Aug. break in Washington D.C., accompanied by expected higher average temps. across the nation, I feel that this column totally misses the point. Dana and Chris have put together one of the funniest video shorts this viewer has ever seen in the American political theater. I frickin' fell out of my chair. Kudos to the both of them, and I think I'll have an Arrogant Bastard! Oh yeah, Adele should have a beer that will lighten her up. I’d suggest an Old Frothingslosh for her, but I want the can when she’s done.
Prost.

Obama's got it coming

Obama's got it coming.

Obama and his supporters used misogyny to steal the primary from Hillary--and the progressive blogs helped him out.

I watched this happen. The progressives utterly disgraced themselves in the primaries:

"Here we come to the crunch. Hillary Clinton (along with her husband) is being universally depicted as a loathsome racist and negative campaigner, not so much because of anything she has said or done, but because the overwhelmingly pro-Obama media - consciously or unconsciously - are following the agenda of Senator Barack Obama and his chief strategist, David Axelrod, to tear to pieces the first serious female US presidential candidate in history.

"What's particularly saddening," says Paul Krugman, professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton and a rare dissenting voice from the left as a columnist in the New York Times, "is the way many Obama supporters seem happy with the . . . way pundits and some news organisations treat any action or statement by the Clintons, no matter how innocuous, as proof of evil intent." Despite widespread reporting to the contrary, Krugman believes that most of the "venom" in the campaign "is coming from supporters of Obama".

Hating Hillary

WaPost always had a conservative slant even though it was portrayed as "liberal" which it never was. WaPost is probably starting to throw tantrums that the man they endorsed last year for president isn't bailing them out or something like that. WaPost doesn't accept people who think critically or stick to the issues. They and the rest of the corporate media are all about playing politics and it appears that our ignorant masses are just fine with it. Better to vote for monied elites than pay attention to people who want to solve problems minus the politics even if they are running for a political office. If Obama loses in 2012, it won't be because of race.

Redundancy At It's Finest...

Once again, anyone who argues against anyone in power is either a racist, a misogynist and/or conservative. Am I the only one who sees a pattern here...? How about, just to be different, we talk about policies and decisions and things of that nature? Things that are important?

They have you right where they want you- screaming about Racsim or Sexsim instead of Cheney's Overthrow of Democracy.
Of all the digs they made - you focused on Hillary's.
So you're panties are in a twist over One (or two) woman being included?Equality means some of the Shitty stuff comes along too.
The media also plays this game from the other side of the street- to the same degree of deteriment to the public.
By attributing all negative outcomes between the white male majority and all other minorities to racism or sexism, cheapens the cause and distracts from the real threat.
Gates/Crowley- Was far more a Conflict in percieved 'status and role' than merely race. How many 'Wife beater' wearing White Hillbilly trash do we see beat down on 'Cops', for drunk and disorderly conduct on their own front lawn?I have yet to hear coined 'Hillbillyism' to describe this phenomena. Abuse of power and Excessive force are apparently commendable in the law enforcement culture and for the last 8 yrs, foreign policy. Our Domestic Cops have taken on the same mindset as our forces policing Iraq;Control all situations by intimidation and force.Crowly didn't go in with the concpet of 'peace Officer', but commando.
As for Sotomayor- it's both race & gender, but mostly gender (they had no problem with Gonzales as AG). But more importantly it has to do with Empathy. One who would rule in favor of the citizen over the Corp....That Crazy pre amble "We the PEOPLE" may influence her decsions.Whats the opposite of 'Empathy' - Apathy, and what sums that attitude up best- "So" (Cheney confession to apathy towards the American people and Our Democracy )
Same goes for Obama's birth cert. Sure the typical racist is frothing over his color. But the fact the Repug Leadership is fueling the fire means their using it as a Smoke screen. Who is accused of secret ops? Who only kept the 'decider' "Basically" Informed? Who Straddled the Executive Branch & Congress like the Colossus of Rhodes- privildges from both, but accountability to neither? They are Deflecting the debate over an Illegitmate presidency from Cheney's to Obama's.They are hoping that if push does come to shove- they can claim that Cheney was entitled to those powers because he was at least native born. Well so was Benedict Arnold, Timothy McVeigh, Charlie Manson...
This Article was just another glaring piece of the 'Shiny Object' mosaic of BS.
"Look at the Sexism, Look at the Racism- Don't pay attention to those Abuses of Power". Gates was an example of how this Culture of tyranny has filtered down to mainstreet. Sotomayor is their means to maintain the power structure through high court rulings and The Birth cert controversy is about distracting away from CheneyCorp's Coup d'tate, over the last 8 yrs - if not decades.
Heres the most Teltale part of this three ring circus the writer is helping proliferate, Why would Repugs be willing to flagrantly flaunt their Racist/Sexist ideology, knowing it will cost them votes? Because the stakes are much higher for the alternative. Being seen (and convicted) as Traitors, and War criminals. The Repugs enabled Cheney's subversion, along with some Dems (Hillary sat on the Armed Services Committee).Investigating Cheney's secret Gov't would expose 3/4 of Congress as complicite, and perhaps even members of SCOTUS (Scalia leant the Legal firepower (and CYA?) behind the Torture memos.Cheney's not a dumbass - If you're gonna CYA, you do it with authority, not peons.Review Scalias televised twisted logic on Punishment and Torture- sound like a legal basis justification of Torture?
The Repugs prefer we focus on, and incite, racial and Gender controversies that means we are not discussing High Crimes investigations and prosecutions.

I stopped watching TV. It's simply spewing vomit and new strains of swing flu 24/7. If you want news, go to Reuters. and read with scrutiny and mindfulness. Remember clear-headed objectivity? It's hard sometimes to see that it's actually happening given the volume of drivel the whole world's sloshing around in. Want the truth? Go to the deepest area of your heart and soul, and live from there; not looking left or right for divine intervention. At least there's honesty in doing so, instead of getting hypnotically drowned in insipid veils and fragments of collective human egoity and ubber-narcissism which seem to rule the surface of life. Up periscope! Dive, Dive! :-)

As the article points out, the disgusting video will accomplish it's purpose of increasing hits to the Post site. Don't go watch it! The liberals too have to stop supporting (by reading and/or viewing) all the junk that is going up even on the liberal sites and so called liberal programs. Where is the real news? The news has become reporting on the flat earth people. Stop clicking Sarah Palin. I am sick of hearing about her, but as long as we keep watching too, they'll keep repeating every tweet. Stop clicking on Lou Dobbs, Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage, ET AL to see what the latest horrible thing they said was! They need to be ignored.
I shouldn't have read this article either. Take my own advice!

What we like to call the "Mainstream Media" is anything but.
THe whole shebang is controlled by five (more or less) media scumbags who manufacture reality to suit their own needs and NEVER ours.
If they truly represented our people's best interests they'd be advocating:
Single-payer universal health care.
A reviatlization of our educational institutions and lower tuition for colleges.
A complete removal of ALL military personnel from EVERY foreign nation.
Investigation leading to the trial of the bush crime family for manifold crimes.
REAL research leading to the cessation of burning ANYTHING producing (more) carbon dioxide.
Seizing and nationalizing all "energy" companies.
An end to the electoral college and the almost hopeless corruption in Washington.
Strict new enforcement of the Sherman anti-trust laws.
This is by no means a complete list, but serves to show just how far we've moved away from a truly free press, and into the domain of Pravda.

I love it when sacred cows are skewered - mmmm - good eatin'!!

Don't any of you realize that this video was a bipartisan spoof? I thought the humor was low brow, certainly, but there is a long and excellent tradition of spearing politicians in this country - as there should be. There are very few politicians with any kind of integrity left in the corridors of power - Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul come to mind.

Politicians have shown across the board that they are not interested in the people's welfare at all - they give us lollipops, pat us on the head, and send us on our way and then attend backroom cash handouts that further cement the power oligarchy for the well-heeled.

When are liberals going to realize that the greatness of America lies not in our government, but in our people? Looking to the government to solve our problems has gotten us nowhere except in massive debt which our children and grandchildren will pay for, thank you very much.

It's time for a bottom-up revolution. All of this top-down worship is a waste of time. As long as they have us squabbling about who to worship in government, who to believe in, we conveniently forget about our own power to change things. If we could but pull our heads out of our arses and each perform one small step that would be a big step indeed.

I do it everyday in my business. I practice old school capitalism - delivering fair value for fair value. In a time when people will step on anyone, exploit anyone for their own gain, I consider it a revolutionary act to play fair even though it means my revenue stream is less than some. It is still adequate for my needs.

Look around you - there are mini-revolutions occurring off the radar in communities all across this country. Community currencies, coops, buying local, people riding bikes, backyard inventors, green innovation, local government implementing green strategies, local governments standing up against the Patriot act, hemp and marijuana legalization movements, people buy smaller, fuel-efficient cars, socially responsible investing, a movement for responsible wealth creation - just doing things in their own small ways to make the world a better place.

Shift your focus. Look at what is moving forward instead of what is not. Add your weight to those initiatives or start your own. The revolution will not be televised and it will not come from the halls of government. You can bet on it.

obamabush has yet to change a thing of substance. gitmo will go on into 2011 and on his 2nd day in office, obama mandated the continuation of outsourcing torture via the CIA rendition program, which biden called "a necessary tool against the bad guys." obummer has recently tried to have a teenager, who was slammed into gitmo torture when he was 12, tried using his 'confession' under torture against him. obomber already has thousands of war-crime deaths under his belt, so it's no surprise he now protects the previous admin's crimes and criminals. obamabush continues the vast giveaway to the financial criminals who schemed this disaster. the government's own watchdog group says the numbers guaranteed under a worst case scenario are now about $23trillion, mostly debt, while the financiers tighten the reins on humanity...

obama's the kind of guy who was pro-palestinian until AIPAC contributed to his senate campaign. obama's an uncle tom who will do nothing to end the unconstitutional and racist drug war in which 51% of those in prison are black while 70% of illegal drug use is by whites. obama will not fight for single-payer. obama will never give back to the american indians the tens of billions stolen from their 'trust fund' at BIA. leonard peltier will continue to rot in prison. minimum wage will stay at $4.60 an hour after taxes. a trillion a year to 'defense' for the 'war of terror'... and there will decidedly not be any investigation into the events of 911.

hillary clinton, like obama, voted for almost every bill of war, war-funding and tyranny (patriot acts, military commissions act, etc.), bush-cheney wanted. senate votes in this one-party system have often been 94-6 in recent years. has hillary protested the wars, the torture, the rapacious bankers, israel's 330+ nukes and arsenal of CBWs, etcetera?

it was hillary clinton and sensenbrenner who sponsored the AETA, animal and environmental terrorist act, by jamming a voice vote when hardly any were back fro xmas leave in congress. obama and clinton both voted for jane harman's 'violent radicalization and grassroots terrorism prevention act' which would, like king george II did, denounce such as jefferson and franklin as terrorists and traitors... on and on.

no change here worth mentioning. all government by garbage. go ahead, throw tomatoes at em all.

Washington Post is already a failure and Obama is a guaranteed one-termer. He wouldn't lose because of race. Damn fuck. I knew I shoulda voted for Ralph Nader but this time I won't be fooled ! Ok, Obama drones. Fire away !

If Obama had done his job properly, he would have been invulnerable to media attacks.

Since Obama has been failing on the wars, taxes, financial meltdown repairs, gitmo, iraq, afghanistan, pakistan, environment, privacy rights, consumer and product safety, healthcare, agriculture, guns, religion, failure to prosecute Bush/Cheney, and women's rights, he lacks the public support needed to conquer the supposed racists and sexists in the media. Obama has very weak and poor leadership skills unlike Ross Perot and Ralph Nader who were ready to reform reform reform the country.

So what's this? More women and minorities are ditching Obama after realizing a fraud that he was and now you want to blame the media for it? Fucking lame man, fucking lame ! What do liberals do when they fail? Instead of correcting themselves, they gotta cry victim and play the race and gender card just to elevate themselves. The god damn conservatives play with the white man's votes while the god damn liberals play with women and minority votes and then you wonder why this country's in the gutters ! What a pile of shit this article really is !

After viewing Milbanks' video I don't see what the concern is about. His "beer selections" were applied to a lot of people. They were both Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals. The concern over this video is overblown.

She is a warmonger and a sellout and a liar and a threat to our country. If she had won the presidency, she would probably already have us at war with Iran. And why do people always bring sex into it? A sellout, lying, warmonger traitor is a sellout, lying warmonger traitor, male or female.

Plus, I'm much more concerned about a press that pushes the public into wars based on lies, or that covers up the crime of the century (911) than I am about a press that picks on poor innocent obama and hillary every now and then.
