'The Select Few' Are Cashing in: Shocking Corruption at the Washington Post

By Bill Moyers and Michael Winship, AlterNet. Posted July 12, 2009.

Insiders in Washington are going to keep dealing themselves winning hands until we decide that it isn't allowed.

If you want to know what really matters in Washington, don't go to Capitol Hill for one of those hearings, or pay attention to those staged White House "town meetings." They're just for show. What really happens -- the serious business of Washington -- happens in the shadows, out of sight, off the record. Only occasionally -- and usually only because someone high up stumbles -- do we get a glimpse of just how pervasive the corruption has become.

Case in point: Katharine Weymouth, the publisher of The Washington Post -- one of the most powerful people in DC -- invited top officials from the White House, the Cabinet and Congress to her home for an intimate, off-the-record dinner to discuss health care reform with some of her reporters and editors covering the story.

But CEOs and lobbyists from the health care industry were invited, too, provided they forked over $25,000 a head -- or up to a quarter of a million if they want to sponsor a whole series of these cozy get-togethers. And what is the inducement offered? Nothing less, the invitation read, than "an exclusive opportunity to participate in the health-care reform debate among the select few who will get it done."

The invitation reminds the CEO's and lobbyists that they will be buying access to "those powerful few in business and policy making who are forwarding, legislating and reporting on the issues...

"Spirited? Yes. Confrontational? No." The invitation promises this private, intimate and off-the-record dinner is an extension "of The Washington Post brand of journalistic inquiry into the issues, a unique opportunity for stakeholders to hear and be heard."

Let that sink in. In this case, the "stakeholders" in health care reform do not include the rabble -- the folks across the country who actually need quality health care but can't afford it. If any of them showed up at the kitchen door on the night of this little soiree, the bouncer would drop kick them beyond the Beltway.

No, before you can cross the threshold to reach "the select few who will actually get it done," you must first cross the palm of some outstretched hand. The Washington Post dinner was canceled after a copy of the invite was leaked to the web site Politico.com, by a health care lobbyist, of all people. The paper said it was a misunderstanding -- the document was a draft that had been mailed out prematurely by its marketing department. There's noblesse oblige for you -- blame it on the hired help.

In any case, it was enough to give us a glimpse into how things really work in Washington -- a clear insight into why there is such a great disconnect between democracy and government today, between Washington and the rest of the country.

According to one poll after another, a majority of Americans not only want a public option in health care, they also think that growing inequality is bad for the country, that corporations have too much power over policy, that money in politics is the root of all evil, that working families and poor communities need and deserve public support if the market system fails to generate shared prosperity.

But when the insiders in Washington have finished tearing worthy intentions apart and devouring flesh from bone, none of these reforms happen. "Oh," they say, "it's all about compromise. All in the nature of the give-and-take-negotiating of a representative democracy."

That, people, is bull -- the basic nutrient of Washington's high and mighty.

It's not about compromise. It's not about what the public wants. It's about money -- the golden ticket to "the select few who actually get it done."

When Congress passed the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act, "the select few" made sure it no longer contained the cramdown provision that would have allowed judges to readjust mortgages. The one provision that would have helped homeowners the most was removed in favor of an industry that pours hundreds of millions into political campaigns.

Check The Little Box

Once again, many thanks to Bill Moyers for speaking the Truth. Why, by the way, is he the only journalist of note who is willing to speak out and tell the Truth on behalf of Americans?

Molly Ivans, great soul that she was, had a real answer to the problem of how to buy our Congress back from the special interests! She wanted to put an option on everybodys' tax return; just a little box at the top where you could check if you wanted to keep the candidates honest. Checking the box would deliver a dollar or two or whatever you wanted to a special fund which would be used to fund political campaigns. The candidates would not be allowed to accept money from lobbyists or Corporations or privately. They would have to use the money raised by the income tax option. And if implemented properly it would take the pressure off the candidates to bend to corporations.

Sadly, nobody is interested in doing it. Too busy raising money from corporations and special interests.

It does not seem to matter how many emails, letters, and phone calls we give those in power. They don't seem to want to listen. Money is all they care about and so they'll only listen to those with the most money. Let's take health care reform as an example. Why there are only 40,000 letters sent to Bernard Sanders, mine included, in support of his bill on single payer even when there are 47 million and counting uninsured. Perhaps we ordinary progressives who don't have the time or money as those at the top do need to find better ways to first unite, understand and respect one another, and be more like community rather than staying isolated and expecting a pol to read let alone listen to a large number of incoming requests for health care reform. From there, we might find better strategies of forcing the pols to actually listen to our needs rather than continue to lie and bully us. I don't know all the solutions but there needs to be some united efforts.

Another pattern I notice is that the public blindly believes that Obama is pushing for the public option except that he isn't and has in fact been open to dumping even that. Obama's PR goons are just trying to keep him positioned as the voice of reason. Watch how he tap dances around the calls for a new stimulus. Anything that goes straight to the people without giving 90% to the elite crooks first will not be approved by this president. He is bought and paid for. His administration HAS JUST ROBBED MILLIONS of retired people and employees by claiming there is no inflation htis year. That will deny COLA money to those who need it most in 2010. But you don't hear a word about the gamed CPI (consumer price index). Help is not on the way. We can only help ourselves. Obama's moves are so predictable they could be made into a new dance. It could be named the "bait, court, and quick switch," requiring numerous 180-degree turns, done adroitly and repeated. I guess it's so spellbinding to dumb-struck audiences that it seems fresh and innovative, every time he assumes his quick steps.

where they threw the HuffPost reporter out?
MSM covers news the way the alley cat covers s**T--coverups.

And their lobbyist party? Obamanation wants group insurance benefits taxed. I want lobbying taxed, instead. Tax the contributions, the dinners, license the skunks, meter their sales pitches and time on the Congressional floor and in offices, and hit'em hard and heavy.

After all, their special provisions cost US citizens plenty.

Kudos to Bill Moyers.

We need to put the names to the deeds. Over and over again. We need to pass the information to our friends, no matter the party. The govt is corrupt.

Any lawyers who want to start a constitutional movement to get all elections made publicly financed? It would pass, of course, as long as the elections are not rigged!

...that the people who really get things done are not just the politicians. The Post was collecting money not to give to the politicians involved, but to give to themselves. The corporate reps were invited to to schmooze and bribe not just the politicians, but also the reporters. Is it any wonder then that the Post's editorial page is rife with professional liars lying in the service of Big Business? The Washington Post is an enemy of the people of the US. Their assets should be seized, and their employees, officers, shareholders, and corporate bribery clients should be imprisoned.

we don't have much power as individuals. joining a group that agrees with your own political opinions adds the to the chance that what as an individual has little chance of succeeding. moveon.org the grey panthers green peace, etc. but do join and add muscle to your opinion and to the organizations that support them. much better then waiting until its bullets and blood.

Against ordinary citizens. Always has been, and barring some kind of miracle, always WILL be.
Any kind of health care "reform" will almost certainly be a scam, designed to make huge profits for the crooks who oppose a "public" option.
The crooks we voted in to protect us from the first set of crooks will enable the scam to continue on its merry way, while millions of us will die for lack of any real health care.
We, as usual, will let it all happen.

While I think that most people realize that our current political system does not have the "public interest" at heart, it will do no good to write articles, fax, phone Congress, because none of them are listening to what "we the people" have to say!

It is time to take to the streets marching and demanding change - NOW! It is only when the public outcry becomes loudest that those politicians that are supposed to "represent we the people" will be scared enough to move away from their corporate sponsors! Whether you are on the right or the left or somewhere in between the apathy that has become "our public voice" must stop! We all must take back our government from the oligarchy because they will never hand it over willingly! When are we all going to see the writing that has been on the wall for far too long!

This information in this valuable article needs comment: "The Washington Post dinner was canceled after a copy of the invite was leaked to the web site Politico.com, by a health care lobbyist, of all people." If this means what it appears to mean, then a single individual took it upon him/herself to commit a decent ethical act. If more who are aware of 'inside' antics begin to follow this same practice, we may gain the level of transparency that can best serve us. Whomever this individual is, she/he has offered a service - Kudos to that individual!!

We all know what goes on in government, the corruption, the back alley workings-but what can we as ordinary people do?
Reading web sites, wrting letters, signing petitions, discussing amongst ourselves doesn't seem to achieve much. What do we really do to reverse this hijacking of our laws that has taken place? Playing by the rules when the other doesn't, guarantees we will never win

Abolish Private "for profit" Prisons
Posted by: ahma_daeus on Jul 13, 2009 3:50 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
INCARCERATING PEOPLE "FOR PROFIT" IS IN A WORD....WRONG!
Even if one does not ask or pretends not to see the rope and the flashing red flag draped around the philosophical question standing solemnly at attention in the middle of the room, it remains apparent that the mere presence of a private “for profit” driven prison business in our country undermines the U.S Constitution and subsequently the credibility of the American criminal justice system. In fact, until all private prisons in America have been abolished and outlawed, “the promise” of fairness and justice at every level of this country’s judicial system will remain unattainable. We must restore the principles and the vacant promise of our judicial system. Our government cannot continue to "job-out" its obligation and neglect its duty to the individuals confined in the correctional and rehabilitation facilities throughout this nation, nor can it ignore the will of the people that it was designed to serve and protect. There is urgent need for the good people of this country to emerge from the shadows of indifference, apathy, cynicism, fear, and those other dark places that we migrate to when we are overwhelmed by frustration and the loss of hope.
My hope is that you will support the National Public Service Council to Abolish Private Prisons (NPSCTAPP) with a show of solidarity by signing "The Single Voice Petition"

We have abandoned our communities and our families in favor of the mindless pursuit of wealth.

That is why no one is reacting to the complete breakdown in the system - once you accept Social Darwinism, the strong get the spoils, then you relinquish the right to be a moral person.

That is what the right wing movement is - the abandonment of morality for a buck, glossed over with faux morality of religious extremism.

The average American prays to Rush and golden idols as big brother rapes the land.

Is this what Sodom and Gomhorra were like?

peace,

Hi everyone. I'm a libertarian and don't get over to Alternet very much, but this is an excellent article. Lately, I've been going out of my way to go to left-wing websites and read the comments, and the amazing thing is how similar they are to the comments on the right-wing websites right now.

Although we definitely still have our disagreements about the size and scope and proper role of government, I believe that it is time to put those concerns tempporarily aside to address a greater threat to our country.

Essentially, both left and right are dealing with the same problem, which is that our government is not responding to ANY of us. The ONLY f*****g thing they do in Washington anymore is give our money to people they like, who then turn around and hand it back to them. Well, that, and attempt to erode a broad spectrum of our most basic constitutional rights.

The bottom line is that NOBODY, right or left, wants this disgusting oligarchy that we've been landed with. But if we are going to fight it, we need, to at least some extent, to put aside partisan politics. Partisan politics are one of the strongest tools of the oligarchy because they set the people against each other instead of against the oligarchs.

The question is, what to do? I'm guessing some of you guys might be skeptical about the tea parties, but having been to three of them, I can tell you that the overarching goal of the organizers is simply to fight corruption and give the government back to the people. (Yes, there are plenty of jerks that show up to promote various god-awful ideologies, but that's just what happens when you issue an open invitation to everyone who is ticked off).

Although the tea parties are not intended to be partisan events, the emphasis on limited government limits their appeal to more right-leaning people, and there is always some partisanship that creeps in. So I don't think they're necessarily the solution for a unified movement, but most people who attend are there because they're angry about the same things you guys are.

What I would propose is that people on the left come up with their own movement, but that the two movements could at least recognize a common goal of taking down the oligarchy. Then we could coordinate protests on the same dates, just like a lot of other different ideological groups do for protests.

I'm open to other ideas as well, and even if you guys organize the most leftist protest in the world, I'll still show up to offer my support for bringing these bastards down. Anyway, sorry this has been so long. I just think that the only way of fixing this problem is to put partisanship temporarily aside, and make our government fear the wrath of a united populace. This was my best effort at outreach. :) Thanks. -Anne

the politicians are on the take we might have to fire them all first. Then change the rules how they operate. No lobbyists, no special funds/money. No Rich People running for office. the more they get the more they want. If your caught being on the take you do time for your crime. No more of these get out of jail/trouble free cards. They don't seem to think they put on there pants like the rest of us, one leg at a time. Term limits, the founding fathers did not intend for people to make serving "We the People" a lifetime career. That would help to keep them honest. Well now, there's a novel idea. Honesty in politics.

Antitrust Enforcement and the Consumer
Many consumers have never heard of antitrust laws, but when these laws are effectively and responsibly enforced, they can save consumers [ 42CFR438.704 ] millions and even billions of dollars a year in illegal [ kickback ] overcharges.
Most states have antitrust laws, and so does the federal government. Essentially, these laws prohibit business practices that unreasonably deprive consumers of the benefits [ HHS T42CFR417.1 systematic denial of Existing Federal T42CFR409.33 Post-Hospital Extended Care Services to force illegal HCFA State OFIS Medicaid Kickback conversions ] of competition, resulting in higher prices for inferior products and services

We have not lived in a democracy for many years. The oil companies, insurance companies, credit agencies, corporations and bankers run the show and our opinions no longer matter. They are wrecking this country on purpose and this situation is not new. Even in WWII Standard Oil sold gasoline to the Nazis and IBM virtually assured that the concentration camps were a smashing success. The war in Iraq is no different and it has nothing at all to do with the attack on 9/11. As long as pockets are lined, the little inconvenience of people dying and coming home maimed is of no concern.

There is a reason that revolution was built into our Constitution and maybe it's time we utilized it while we still can. Does this sound radical? We are cutting teacher's salaries, dropping summer school, many cannot afford to go to the doctor and there is no money for social security, yet we can spend billions in Iraq paying the Iraqi people to not destroy their own country and, manage to find 700 billion dollars to bail out rich guys who caused the problem in the first place. It is time to be radical.

Time after time I have read the reader comments portion of various articles concerning the latest government out-rage. Over and over; I see well-meaning people propose political actions such as writing letters to congress and participating in demonstrations, and oftentimes blame is cast upon fellow citizens or a political party. Sadly, the proposed solutions are at best the equivalent to placing a band-aid on a potentially mortal gunshot wound.
Consider the fact that the same Constitution that was supposedly designed to limit the powers of government has produced the most powerful government in the world! Blaming fellow citizens for allowing this growth to happen overlooks at least three important facts:
1. Justification for the U.S. system of representative governance has been made from the beginning based upon the stated assumption that common citizens do not have the time to learn the details of every proposed bill.
2. The common citizens, then and now, were never allowed the option of ratifying or not ratifying either the amendable Articles of Confederation or its illegitimate replacement: the CONstitution, and should not be expected to babysit the government in order to make it behave.
3. The recent overwhelming public disapproval for the bailout bill which was passed anyway proves once again that the politicians have contempt for the common person. Face it: Every Presidential candidate, congressman, and Senator who signed that bill flipped you the bird! Citizen petition failed!
If it was ever true that we citizens rule the government, then why are so many roads, airports, and buildings named after government officials? Do employers name their business after an employee?
The attendees of the Constitutional convention consisted of Lawyers, Judges, Bankers, and Politicians, so it should not surprise anyone that the Constitution contains loopholes. Patrick Henry, when asked why he did not attend the convention, replied: "Because I smell a rat!" Go ahead: Look these things up.
Farmer government has fenced its human livestock within its borders, and it expects to continually milk and shear them and you! Coercive taxation is theft, and we live in a violence-based society. Abu ghraib and decades of prison rape have proven that the federal and state governments have a history of permitting torture.
The solution to these problems begins with yourself! You must first free yourself and your family by learning about moral and rational philosophy, then teach others. It will take years to educate enough people to make a societal difference, but the political alternative - limited government - cannot logically work!
