Recently, it appears the NYPD is getting even more voracious in their policing, with increasing examples of arrests over absurd and unclear violations. Today at Zuccotti Park, where protesters are commemorating the one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, there's already been at least one arrest under confused pretenses, when a man was hauled in, apparently, for yelling. North Dakota Congressman Rick Berg's2007 vote to make an abortion a crime with it a life sentence hasn't become a key campaign talking point. To Berg, however, that makes sense. According to him, most of state's residents would agree with him on that vote.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah called for a week of protests across Lebanon over a film mocking Islam, as symbols of US influence were targeted by angry Muslims in many countries across the world.

In the latest outpouring of anger, around 1,000 Afghans took to the streets of Kabul on Monday, throwing stones at a US base, torching cars and shouting "Death to America", police said.   Read more

Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish calendar and one of the two High Holidays (along with Yom Kippur) this year fell on the anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. And since the faith community has been a big part of Occupy and last year's Yom Kippur ceremony in Zuccotti was such a memorable experience (described to me by two different people this week as the most meaningful Jewish experience they'd had), Occupy Judaism took this opportunity to once again celebrate in the park.   Read more

And in Washington a rightwing Christian leader is inciting hatred toward the poor (and people of color) in midwestern cities who he says will illegally vote for Obama. Washington said it was deploying forces to cope with violence in as many as 18 different locations as deadly Muslim anger spreads over a US-made movie that mocks Islam.

Two US marines were killed in Afghanistan when insurgents armed with guns and rockets stormed a heavily fortified air base late on Friday in an attack that the Taliban militia said was to avenge the film.   Read more
