Surging Number of Drug Offenders in Prison or on Parole/Probation
The number of drug offenders in prison and jail, or on probation and parole, is skyrocketing. An in-depth analysis by DrugWarFacts.org reveals that in 1990, an estimated 179,070 people were incarcerated for drugs, compared to 337,405 in 2009. That same year, a quarter of all people on probation, parole, or in prisons had a drug charge as their most serious offense.
Even  more alarming is the number of drug offenders in federal prisons, which has exploded at a rate of +212.5% since 1990.
