Miss Pennsylvania Resigns In Protest of Transgender Candidates
Last week, Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin resigned before the Miss USA crowning in protest of the decision to allow transgender candidates to compete. Monnin wrote a letter to the Miss Universe Organization, explaining the reasons for her resignation:
[I refuse to be] part of a pageant system that has so far and so completely removed itself from its foundational principles as to allow and support natural born males to compete in it. This goes against every moral fiber of my being. I believe in integrity, high moral character, and fair play, none of which are part of this system any longer.
Monnin publicly called the winner-selection process of the Miss Universe Organization “fraudulent, lacking in morals, inconsistent and in many ways trashy.” She then posted a long statement on her Facebook, claiming she was actually leaving because she believed the contest to be “rigged.”
Earlier this year, the Miss Universe Organization allowed transgender candidates to compete, with Jenna Talackova, of Miss Canada, the first transgender competitor. Talackova finished in the Top 12 and tied for Miss Congeniality.
