Jon Stewart: Romney Won't Pursue Racist Policies Because He's a Mormon -- He'll Do So Because He's a Republican
On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart looked at the interest -- on both the right and the left -- in Mitt Romney's religion, Mormonism. On the Christian right, some leaders seem to have decided, now that Romney is the Republican nominee presumptive, that his Mormonism isn't such a huge deal after all. (In Stewart's words, "Simple math: I hate Barack Obama more than I love Jesus.") But while there are many interesting analyses to be made about the role of religion in politicians' lives, Stewart has a point when he says, "You can't cherry pick the worst aspects of a religion and then hold every member of that religion solely responsible for it....It's not like Mitt Romney will pursue policies that are unfair to Black people because he's a Mormon. He'll do that because he's a Republican."
