Student Debt Activists Holding "Fax-In" Day to Tell Sallie Mae Head Albert Lord "We Need to Talk!"
The Student Labor Action Project and Occupy Student Debt are calling for borrowers and supporters around the country to take action today, sending faxes to student lender Sallie Mae head Albert Lord asking him to meet with them to discuss the bubble of debt his company's helped create.
From the SLAP:
Now we’re demanding that students get bailed out, just like the banks and corporations did. If they are too big to fail, so is an entire generation of college graduates and those that didn’t even have the possibility to get a college education because of sky rocketing prices compounded with the interest rates loans brings. We demand to have a say in our lives. We need to collectively call on Sallie Mae, the largest profiteer off of student loans, to demand they forgive student debt – they can ignore one voice or even two, but not when we all speak up together.
The letter they offer for the faxes calls for student loan forgiveness after five years, the elimination of interest, as well as for Sallie Mae to pay its full income tax instead of taking advantage of loopholes, and for them to quit lobbying on public policy issues like Pell Grants for low-income students.
The odds of Lord taking any of these requests seriously are probably pretty slim (the man has his own golf course, do you think he's going to give up profits?), but this is yet another step in the growing movement to do something about the growing crisis around student debt in the U.S.
