Tuition will be going up hundreds of dollars a year for University of North Carolina students next year--but the students aren't accepting the austerity argument.

The News Observer reported:

About 150 student protesters marched, chanted and pushed their way into the lobby outside the UNC Board of Governors meeting before the vote. At least one person was arrested.

Some occupied the seats of UNC chancellors, catching the UNC administrators off guard. "Those seats are our seats!" the students chanted from the lobby. Extra chairs were brought into the room for the chancellors.

The students cited the state's constitution--which says that the public universities should be free "as far as practicable"--in chanting, mic-check style, ""This is a sad day ... for public education ... and for democracy. We the students ... wish the board of governors ... had acted with courage ... and upheld the North Carolina Constitution."
