Occupy Phoenix Demonstrators Arrested, Pepper Sprayed for Protesting ALEC Meeting

Wednesday morning, Phoenix police arrested about half a dozen Occupy Phoenix demonstrators protesting an ALEC meeting. Twice, they used pepper spray against the protesters.

According to KTAR,

Various organizations ranging from labor to civil rights groups were there to protest against the American Legislative Exchange Council's States and Nation Summit.

And

The protesters accuse ALEC of being a massive nonprofit body that brings corporations and legislators together to draft ``model'' legislation like Arizona's SB 1070.

According to the ALEC website, hundreds of State Legislators will meet for three days in Phoenix to discuss free market solutions to create jobs and improve the economy.   AlterNet's Addie Stan has called  ALEC "the connective tissue that links state legislators with right-wing think tanks, leading anti-tax activists and corporate money."  For OWS, protesting their events and gatherings is a direct expresson of their determination to shrink corporate influence over politics.
