Journalists, Including AlterNet Contributor, Jailed and Held in Oakland After Protests

We've received word that Susie Cagle, who reported on the first Occupy Oakland crackdown for AlterNet, was arrested last night as police rounded up protesters. Susie had press credentials as a reporter but is, according to reports from her Twitter feed, still being held.

#occupyoakland @susie_c is in jail. Call Santa Rita: demand the release of her and 30 other women, including journos and LOs. 925 551 6590

#occupyoakland @susie_c and 30 other women from last night's arrests were transferred to Santa Rita. 80 men at N County, being released.

Joe Macare, of In These Times magazine, thentweeted: "Just called Santa Rita & they told me she's at North County & to call 5102687777"

I spoke to someone at North County Jail, who told me that Susie had not been fully booked (despite having been arrested at 6 AM) and the only information they had was her name. I was told to call back in a couple of hours, and that they could not comment on whether it was policy to arrest and hold journalists with press credentials for doing their job--in this case, covering a massive public protest and reporting on possibly violent action by city police.

I will update this post if I hear more. You can read Susie's report from Occupy Oakland here.
