Smoking in a Campaign Ad -- Herman Cain is All for Cigarrettes, But What About Medical Marijuana?
It's a weird ad. Cain's campaign manager, Mark Block, is the star. First, Block, with his face what looks like inches away from a crappy camera, sternly expresses his faith in Cain to "put the United back in the United States." Then, he takes a long drag of a cigarette.
The video has garnered a lot of mixed responses, the negative ones creeping up around Cain's history of lobbying against cigarette tax and smoking bans. As political blogger Doug Mataconis put it,
"I’m not at all sure what to say about this. Except to repeat the theory I came up with last night that the Herman Cain campaign is Sacha Baron Cohen’s big follow-up to Borat."
Of course, Herman Cain's belief in cigarette-smoker-freedom is not reflected in support for medical marijuana. His stance on the issue is pretty much unknown, and at the 2011 Ames Straw Poll, he dodged the question. That being said, marijuana is actually less carcinogenic than cigarrettes, and has incredible medical value, including its ability to shrink tumors. But imagine the backlash if Block had lit up a joint.
