Alabama Town Uses Horrific Immigration Law to Deny Water to Those Without Driver's License

Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I live in the United States. Today is one of those times. It’s hard to imagine that any state within our great union would ever deny a human right to a human being, but the city of Allgood, Alabama has decided that the best way to handle immigration law is to cut off water service to anyone who cannot produce an Alabama driver’s license.

This atrocity is called Section 30 of Alabama law HB 56, and it forbids people who cannot provide proper documentation of citizenship from entering into a “business transaction” with the state of Alabama. Apparently, in Allgood, having access to clean water is considered a business transaction.

There are a lot of words one could use to describe this Alabama law. Thankfully, we don’t need to waste our creativity on sharing them here since Attorney General Eric Holder and the U.S. Department of Justice are already suing Alabama, claiming that the law is unconstitutional.

There are many ways to deal with the challenges that come from immigration. Taking away someone’s access to water is not one of them.

How do YOU feel about Alabama law HB 56?
