Watch Press Conference About Troy Davis' Last Words
"May God bless your souls," Troy Davis said to the prison staff who were about to kill him.
A few witnesses to the Troy Davis execution last night described his last words, which amounted to a maintaining of innocence and a request to "dig deeper" into his case. Their press conference also described the process of his execution--MSNBC has the video below.
Warning: this is an upsetting press conference in which a group of journalists describe a man's death seriously, but matter-of-factly.
In the second video, also potentially disturbing, Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow spoke with a highly emotional Allen Ault, former Warden of the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison where Troy Davis was executed, about the devastating emotional toll carrying out these "very premeditated murders" takes on the state-sponsored killers, and his own growing realization that the death penalty "does not deter" and is logically and morally wrong.
Ault says that he and other colleagues who have participated in this system, "people of conscience" have struggled with trauma, doubt and regret over their participation.
"It exacts a toll whether your think they are innocent or guilty--you're actually killing someone," he says.
