Biden: Tea Party "Acted Like Terrorists" in Debt Deal

Joe Biden, sayer of things we are sometimes thinking, severely indicted the Tea Party Republicans in a closed-door meeting with the Democratic Caucus yesterday, according to Politico. Specifically, he co-signed Mike Doyle's assertion that the Tea Party had been acting like a band of terrorists, defined by Merriam-Webster as those who employ "the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion." Hmm. Sources, via Politico:

“We have negotiated with terrorists,” an angry Doyle said, according to sources in the room. “This small group of terrorists have made it impossible to spend any money.”

Biden, driven by his Democratic allies’ misgivings about the debt-limit deal, responded: “They have acted like terrorists.”

Biden’s office initially declined to comment about what the vice president said inside the closed-door session, but after POLITICO published the remarks, spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said: “The word was used by several members of Congress. The vice president does not believe it’s an appropriate term in political discourse.”

Later, Biden denied his use of the word to CBS News, but he did go on record saying the GOP had "guns to their heads." Regardless, Biden will certainly come under more fire thanks to the right wing's disdain for anyone using the term "terrorist" unless they are referring to Muslims, Middle Easterners and/or those who are otherwise brown, but as Americans, maybe we can agree that "emotional terrorism" sounds about right when describing the debt impasse. Or, if you like, a "Satan sandwich." Read the full piece at Politico.
