Debt Deal is a "Satan Sandwich," Says Congressional Black Caucus Leader
Emanuel Cleaver, Dem from Missouri and the Chair of the Congressional Black Congress, is as dismayed by Obama's debt deal as much as other progressives. Last night, on "Roll Call," he told MSNBC's Chris Jansing that he hated the deal, and that "If I were a Republican, this would be a night to party."
But more memorably, he described the deal as a "sugar-coated Satan sandwich," and antithetical to religion because of its potential gutting of programs that assist the so-called salt of the earth... the poor, the sick, the meek. Cleaver:
“What you see is antithetical to everything the religions of the world teach: take care of the poor, take care of the aged. Look at the phone calls I’ve gotten. They are seven-to-one in favor of a balanced deal, and also preserving Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security. And I’m concerned about this because we don’t know the details. And until we see the details, we are going to be extremely non-committed.”
Both Nancy Pelosi and the CBC have both said they may not support the deal.
