Melissa Harris-Perry on the Race-Based Wealth Gap and Its Connection to Public Policy
This is an excellent segment from Melissa Harris-Perry's guest stint on the Rachel Maddow Show. Yesterday, some stunning numbers were released showing a skyrocketing, dispiriting racial wealth gap.
Here, Harris-Perry carefully and concisely decimates the myth that the government haggling over the budget and a family balancing its budget are analagous. And she addresses the scary wealth gap between whites and people of color in our country, and how government's choices, not just personal choices, have contributed to it.
You can't earn your way out of a wealth gap, says Harris-Perry, because it's not the same as an income gap.
The solutions discussed? Housing reform, financial regulation, and oh, yeah, make sure to tax the rich.
