Donald Trump Tells GOP To Default Just to Screw Obama
Can we stop indulging this insane person? Yesterday on Fox and Friends (where else?), Donald Trump offered his advice to the Republican party on the debt ceiling. One would think that a man of his financial success would have sound, practical, possibly innovative advice for balancing a budget and coming up with a compromise, but apparently Trump doesn't have that much dignity. The shamed former GOP Presidential candidate offered only one missive: Default, just to screw Obama. McClatchy:
Trump seems to think that using the country's sparkling AAA credit rating as a sacrificial lamb and letting the nation default would damage Obama, who has been willing to put everything including entitlements on the table, more than it would hurt Republicans, who have refused to raise revenues on the richest Americans and companies during the debt ceiling negotiations.
"When it comes time to default, they're not going to remember any of the Republicans' names. They are going to remember in history books one name, and that's Obama," Trump said.
Aside from being utterly disgusting, Trump's statements are instructive, in a nutshell: they illustrate how disconnected hyper-conservative millionaires of his ilk are to the middle class, much less the poor, who will feel the brunt of it if the country defaults. But he also underestimates and insults the intelligence of the American public: if the GOP pushes the country into default because of a stalemate and a painfully transparent desire for Obama to go down, we will recognize as much, and we will punish them.
