Transgender Woman Beaten in McDonald's as Employee Videotapes Attack
Last week on April 18 Chrissy Lee Polis a 22-year-old transgender woman wasbeaten in a McDonald's restaurant near Baltimore, MD. A 14-year-old girl and an 18-year-old girl have been arrested in the brutal attack. Reuters describes what happened:
At one point in the video, the girls dragged Polis across the restaurant to the front door, where they continued to punch and kick her. The footage concludes with Polis bleeding profusely and going into what appears to be a seizure as the two teenage girls leave the restaurant.
What did employees at the restaurant do? One of them videotaped the beating and then posted it on YouTube. And Change.org reports, "employees can be heard on the video shouting words of encouragement to the attackers." McDonald's took a week to fire the employee who videotaped the attack and has yet (it appears) to take action against any others.
The Baltimore Sun reports that, "although two people tried to intervene, others can be seen standing and watching, and some are laughing." One of the people who jumped into help was Vicky L. Thoms, a middle-aged woman who was punched in the face in the process.
Eden James, director of organizing for Change.org said, "Let's hope that this attack at a McDonald's franchise underscores the importance of providing employees adequate training to confront harassment based on gender identity and gender expression."
More than 37,000 people have signed a Change.org petition (below) demanding that all employees who stood by and encouraged the attack be fired.
