More in Political Mistress News: Former Ensign Aide Indicted For Illegal Lobbying

The Associated Press is reporting that Doug Hampton, the former aide to Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., was indicted this afternoon "for allegedly violating criminal conflict of interest laws." At issue is Hampton's lobbying the staff of his former boss on behalf of an energy firm and a Las Vegas airline company.

Poor Hampton. Guy can't win for losing. That lobbying job looked an awful lot like a payoff for staying mum about the fact that Ensign, Hampton's boss, had an affair with Hampton's wife, who also happened to be one of Ensign's campaign aides. (Stay with me now.) That was in addition to a couple of "gifts" to the Hamptons totalling $96,000 from Ensign's parents.

Ensign is part of the super-secret evangelical cult known as the Family or the Fellowship -- that of "C Street" fame.

Ensign has decided not to seek re-election, apparently foreseeing a rather tough race. Gee, ya think?
