Jerry Springer-Like "Jose Luis Sin Censura" Protested for Racism, Misogyny, Homophobia
"Jose Luis Sin Censura" is like a 'roided Jerry Springer show -- exhibiting all the gross, exploitative behavior of that relic program, but taking it further that you may have thought possible in its nudity, fistfights and taunting. Audience members scream racist and homophobic epithets at each other, women strip naked and perform lap dances and guests are physically attacked if they're perceived to be gay. It violates every FCC rule you can think of... but even though it's being aired twice daily in 37 markets, nothing has been done, likely because Spanish-language programs tend to be overlooked. In response, three organizations -- the National Hispanic Media Coalition, the Women's Media Center, and GLAAD -- have filed a joint complaint against Liberman Broadcasting for its offense, along with launching an online petition, signable here. If you need proof for how offensive it is, watch clips here.
And in an interesting/depressing, anecdotal flip on this story, a Mexican court has suspended all screenings of Presunto Culpable,a documentary exposing corruption in Mexico's justice system -- despite the fact that it's the highest-grossing documentary in that country of all time. The film follows Antonia Zuniga, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a 2005 murder, despite overwhelming proof that he was innocent. It opened in mid-February and grossed $1.54 million in ten days, higher even than previous top-spot-holder Fahrenheit 9/11. The ruling came after Victor Daniel Reyes, Zuniga's cousin and accuser, said he did not give his consent to appear in the film, but producer Leyda Negrete believes it is an attempt at censorship.
