NYC Comes Out Strong for Wisconsin and Women's Health
Downtown New York was a sea of protest and solidarity today, as a truly massive rally for Wisconsin Solidarity was followed by another large rally a few blocks away for women's rights. In between the two, there was an impressive stream of hundreds if not thousands of dedicated activists moving from one to the other, wearing red Wisconsin gear or carrying pink Planned Parenthood signs.
My fellow AlterNet blogger Lauren Kelley and I arrived at Foley Square for the second rally (after meeting family and friends who had been at the first one, too--now that's stamina!) at which we were roused by a distinguished speaker list, particularly a group of local pro-choice politicians spouting righteous outrage including Senator Charles Schumer and congress members Anthony Weiner, Carolyn Maloney and Jerold Nadler, many of whom had also been at the previous rally. Schumer drew huge cheers assured the crowd that the bill to de-fund family planning would be "dead on arrival" in the Senate.
Kathleens Hanna and Turner, of Riot Grrl and Hollywood fame, respectively, also spoke to the crowd which spilled out of Foley Square and packed the adjacent sidewalks. Reproductive Justice groups like SisterSong and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health were well-represented on the podium.
Here are a few of our pictures. If you have more pictures from any rallies, send them our way!
