Anti-Choice Democrats Join Republicans on Misogynistic 'Forcible Rape' Abortion Bill
Yesterday we reported on the most despicably misogynistic aspect of an already despicable and misogynistic bill -- the clause in the 'No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act' which cruelly seeks to redefine rape. As is, the clause would exclude any woman who was raped from Medicare abortion coverage if she was not raped with violence, leaving vulnerable victims of incest, statutory rape, and other types of non-consensual intercourse while effectively diminishing and trivializing her. As Shakesville noted, “This law communicates to those men that as long as they drug their partners before raping them, the government will deny funding for an abortion, should a pregnancy result.”
But according to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN), roughly two-thirds of all rapes were committed by someone known to the victim. Thirty-eight percent of rapes are committed by a friend or acquaintance, and 28 percent are committed by someone with whom the victim is already intimate. RAINN also estimates that 3,204 pregnancies occurred as the result of rape in the 2004-2005 period.
The bill, which John Boehner lists as a top priority, was sponsored by 173 House Reps, most of whom are Republican, with a small handful of Democrats supporting it as well. Yesterday, Politico sought a commentfrom pro-life caucus Daniel Lipinski, D-IL, on this specific aspect of the bill. His response? None, as 'Lipinski's office said it was their policy at this time not to comment on the bill at all despite being a co-sponsor.' Unreal.
