Scientists Successfully Reverse Aging Process in Mice
A team of Harvard Scientists have turned a fleet of laboratory mice into real-life Benjamin Buttons. By injecting the prematurely aging mice to reactivate an enzyme telomerase , they were able to stop the deterioration. This experiment targeted a process called " telomere shortening" which is behind much of human and animal aging.
"What we saw in these animals was not a slowing down or stabilisation of the ageing process. We saw a dramatic reversal – and that was unexpected," Ronald DePinho told the Guardian. His study was published in the journal Nature.
"This could lead to strategies that enhance the regenerative potential of organs as individuals age and so increase their quality of life. Whether it serves to increase longevity is a question we are not yet in a position to answer."
