Anti-Healthcare GOP Freshman Whines About Having to Wait 28 Days to Get Govt Healthcare
Speaking of anti-healthcare GOP hypocrisy, Politico has reported that incoming Republican Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland is causing a big to-do over the fact that his government-subsidized healthcare plan will take 28 days to go into effect after he's sworn in in January. At the same time, Harris is vocally opposed to "the government takeover" of healthcare.
The punchline to the punchline is that Harris is himself a doctor. And of course, he has access to -- and the resources to pay for -- COBRA, which would extend his current health insurance for the month-long gap.
Harris is seemingly unaware of the irony of his position -- railing against having to go uninsured (even though he doesn't have to) for a mere 28 days while some 30 million Americans really are uninsured, many of them for long stretches of time and with no light at the end of the tunnel. And Harris wants to repeal healthcare reform, which would only increase the number of uninsured citizens.
This morning, Joe Scarborough (who's not usually my favorite person, but stay with me) nailed Harris for his position, noting: "So I guess he was against government-run health care before he was for it. Or maybe he’s just saying that Congressmen should have it, but working-class people shouldn’t?" Watch the clip here:
