Report: CIA Knowingly Gave Shelter to Nazis
A secret Justice Department report obtained by the New York Times details decades of Nazi-hunting in the United States--but disturbingly, it also details several instances of Nazi-hiding as well. The CIA in particular "knowingly gave shelter" to known Nazis in exchange for intelligence beyond the Cold War's infamous Iron Curtain and assistance on programs like NASA's Rocket Science one.
"America, which prided itself on being a safe haven for the persecuted, became — in some small measure — a safe haven for persecutors as well," the report reads.
While the ties of many of these figures to the Third Reich has never been a secret, what the report most shockingly details is a long history of direct CIA complicity in gaining entry for these figures and keeping their identities secret.
The struggle to see the report has been a long one. Only a heavily-redacted version was released under threat of lawsuit, but the Times obtained a full copy.
