Senator Patty Murray's victory in Washington State is sealed by a slim but definite margin--46,000 votes at last count. Her opponent, Dino Rossi, conceded last night after a media analysis of the vote, carefully calibrating the counted and uncounted votes, declared her the unquestionable winner.

She's become one of the only women to successfully win a fourth term in the senate, (she was already the first female senator from her state) and her victory has helped keep the Democratic majority in that legislative body--the Dems now have 53 seats. Murray's victory, along with that of her fellow West-Coast female politico Senator Barbara Boxer from California, means that despite Democratic and pro-choice losses, women will have two of their staunchest advocates left in the senate.

In keeping with her "mom in tennis shoes" image, Murray's victory party was held in a pizzeria. She reassured  voters that she could handle Washington's changed landscape: "I have been in the minority, I have been in the majority, I've been in 50-50, I've been in both houses Republican controlled and both houses Democratic controlled... I've had all the experiences," she said.
