Split Verdict for Cops Accused of Obstructing Investigation into Immigrant's Beating Death
A jury issued a split verdict Thursday against three former Shenandoah police officers accused of obstructing justice in the investigation of a fatal beating of an immigrant.
Former police Chief Matthew Nestor was found guilty of falsifying records and hindering a federal investigation. He was found not guilty of conspiracy.
Former police Lt. William Moyer was found guilty of making false statements, but acquitted on four other counts.
Former police Officer Jason R. Hayes was acquitted on both counts he faced.
Prosecutors alleged Nestor, Moyer and Hayes obstructed the investigation of the beating of Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala on July 12, 2008. Prosecutors said Nestor, Moyer and Hayes filed false police reports to try to impede the investigation.
Ramirez, 25, of Shenandoah, died of head injuries at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, two days after the beating.
Last October, a federal jury in Scranton found Brandon J. Piekarsky and Derrick M. Donchak guilty of committing a hate crime and violating the civil rights of Ramírez Zavala. They will be sentenced on Feb. 23.
