You may have noticed political advertisements for conservatives showing up on AlterNet. Readers have pointed this out and wondered why.

So here's the deal. AlterNet is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As such, we cannot endorse or favor any candidates for political office. In terms of political advertising, we can take any ads or none of the ads. But we can't pick and choose.

Since we need the revenue produced by advertisements during an election season, we opt to take all ads. Many of the ads are via Google and flow into our site automatically -- i.e. we don't know what is coming nor are we involved in negotiating for the ads.

We trust our readers' intelligence and assume you will make your choices based on your values, and vote for the person you feel is best for the office.

Don Hazen is the executive editor of AlterNet.
