Just When You Thought It Was Safe: 3 Potential Obstacles to Health-Care Reform
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest News & Politics headlines via email.
It was high drama for a Saturday in the U.S. Capitol Building -- at least what counts for high drama in the Senate. Would Majority Leader Harry Reid be able to deliver every single senator in his caucus for a vote that would allow his historic health-care bill to move to the floor for debate? In the end, Reid won that victory, with caveats from a handful of reluctant senators. Hundreds of millions in Medicaid funds were handed to Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., for the very poorest of her state’s poor in exchange for her vote (a move Capitol Hill staffers dubbed the “Louisiana Purchase”).
The fate of national health-care reform rests on Reid’s ability to repeat his 60-vote feat in order to close debate and bring the bill to a final vote, and there’s no guarantee that he can. In fact, it’s looking a little dicey. But even among veteran Congress-watchers, there’s no consensus on whether or not Reid will succeed in the end. To do so, the majority leader will need to negotiate three points of contention.
The Public Option
The suspense leading up to the vote ended when Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., the lone Democratic hold-out, took to the Senate floor to announce that she would not join a Republican filibuster that would keep the bill from moving forward. But, Lincoln promised, she would not vote for a final bill that contains a public health-insurance plan. That may simply mean that she allows the bill to come to the floor but votes against it, knowing that Reid needs only 51 to win the bill after he clears the final procedural hurdle.
But Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., has promised to keep the bill from coming to the floor if it contains a public option of any kind, so that means Reid may have to find a way to lure Sen. Olympia Snow, the Republican from Maine, into keeping a filibuster away from his bill, and that would likely require a dramatic change to the public option as currently configured -- perhaps requiring states to “opt in” or setting some sort of trigger mechanism that would activate a public insurance plan only if insurance companies fail to meet benchmarks for cost containment. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., has made a similar threat.
Anti-abortion Language
Nelson of Nebraska has also threatened to filibuster any bill that does not include the unprecedented anti-abortion measures called for by the Stupak language attached to the bill passed by the House a week ago. Nelson is associated with the right-wing religious group known as The Family, to which Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., the congressman who sponsored the anti-abortion amendment to the House bill, also belongs.
Stupak spent the last week setting himself up to be some sort of a broker of an abortion-language deal, appearing on both Fox News, where he promised to take a hard line during any future negotiations between members of the House and Senate in a conference committee, and on MSNBC's Hardball, where he seemed to be playing good cop. (The Stupak language goes far beyond current law, which simply forbids the use of federal dollars for abortion procedures -- a measure known as the Hyde amendment. Stupak's amendment essentially bars insurance companies from offering abortion coverage in polices offered to women receiving a subsidy for the purchase of insurance through a federally administered health-care exchange, even if the purchaser is buying that part of the coverage with her own dollars.) Stupak told Hardball host Chris Matthews that he might accept a compromise that would forbid private insurers who currently include abortion coverage in their policies from dropping such coverage.
Pro-choice House members have also laid down a marker, with as many as 40 saying that if the bill produced by a conference committee -- the last step in the legislative process before a final bill, where House and Senate bills will be combined -- contains the Stupak language, they won't vote for it. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., who co-chairs the House Pro-Choice Caucus with Rep. Louis Slaughter, D-N.Y., told AlterNet that she was engaged in discussions with pro-choice Senators Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., and was hopeful that the Senate would avoid the fate of the House bill with regard to abortion coverage.

Indeed! According to right-$winging propagan-duh pundits on tell-lie-vision and talk hate raaadio (Mr. Oxycontin, Shawn In$anity, Redneck BecKKK, the O'Nazi Fukkker, et.al.), the only true reform for Amerika's health care crisis is... TAX CUTS FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES! And many sheeple people in Amerika are willing to bend over for that corp-rat propagan-duh!
The media pundits, all of them multi-multi-multi-millionaires, also preach that every fat ass consumer citizen in Amerika has to support the ethno-racist apartheid policies of Israel... and Amerika's glorious [sic] troops fighting "terrorists wedding parties" in the glorious [sic] invasions/occupations of Iraq-nam, Afghanistan-nam and Western Pak-nuk-nam, etc.
Hmmm... think about it. Think about multi-multi-multi-millionaires on the PUBLIC owned(?) air waves... giving ewe folks the newes!

I'm beginning to think I need to side w/ the teabaggers. What we've needed all along is single payer, anything less is a boon to big insurance, not the average american.
Last, as can be seen by Socialism, Abortion and Boobs, it is very very evident that there is a HUGE assault on women going on. Stupak, mammograms, annual pap smears (that changed a few years ago and is now again being brought out by the rightwing media). But maybe now as I write it, I can see what the rightwing is doing, exciting their base. Is this part of the grand propaganda scheme? Keeping the teabaggers excited and getting the liberals to buy in too? Hmm, need to think about that one.

the public option/universal healthcare was doomed from the start by a concessionary president who argued in a round-about-way, in so many facile words, that it was impossible at this time in america for this to happen because of so many suspicious little minds. in effect, obama actually led the fight against it when he said he was for it. i will vote third party next election. with this, the economy, and the war, his concessions to corporate interests, he may likely become a one-term president.

Is it how much our employers pay as their contribution?
If they pay 1/2 of the 16k or 22k, would that open that 1/2 to a tax of what, 25% or 33% or what? Reduce our salaries more so that corporations don't give us what we need, that being healthcare? WTF?
I just hate the 2 party system. Before we know it, every last dime that we make will go to someone other than ourselves. My state is in a deficit situation, worst case 25% of our state govt might be cut due to shortfalls. This translates to higher property taxes, another rightwing objective.
I am sooooooooo pisssssssssed off!

There was an article just in yesterday's Omaha-World Herald about him, and where he spoke about his oppostion to the Obama plan.
This dude (Nelson) calls himself a Democrat, but he is anything but progressive. And it is also hypocritical for him to associate himself with such other Nebraska Progressives as William Jennings Bryan and George Norris.
The Health Insurance industry is a big employer and a big presence in Omaha, and it is well-know to all Nebraskans that Nelson is totally in the pocket of the insurance industry. He sold his soul to Mutual of Omaha a long time ago.

The real problem are the political whores in Congress, that have sold out their "constituents" & this nation, for the Oligarchy that writes the checks! All the while selling their "constituents" on patriotism, G-d, Gays, Guns, the ills of government, & faux culture wars, all the while they are dismantling the social safety nets, stealing from US & our children with the massive "tax cuts" for the Rich Oligarchy, underfunding all government agencies in charge of enforcement of rules & regulations, & yet they continue to increase DOD spending!
In light of the fact that the GOP truly believes, government is the problem, I think they are right, government is the problem because WE the People that have allowed ourselves to become dumbed down continue to vote these jokers into office! Because even as we see that they aren't doing what we would like, we want to keep believing that they too are Americans, and they have to see the devastating effect these policies are having on the populace! I realize that they frankly just don't give a damn! And too that end, I believe that we shouldn't either - kick them out - each and every Congressman that votes against we the people and for the Oligarchy - VOTE THEM OUT, THEY NEED TO GO!!!!

Tell your senators to support single-payer health care by co-sponsoring S. 703, the American Health Security Act.

Well, Obamacare will only be spreading gasoline on a well lit fire, for it surely will not do a thing for Americans. But the insurance companies will receive a windfall.
10 MILLION MORE AMERICANS UNEMPLOYED WITH THIS HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION.
By the way, how is the president doing at putting Americans back to work?
You may ask, how is that possible? Well, large employers will be delighted with the legislation, for they can abandon paying insurance companies $8,000 - 15,000 per year per employee, and pay only $3,500. However, for the small businessman who has no healthcare policy, he will now be forced to pay $3,500 where he pays nothing at present. What will he do? He will whack his workforce anywhere from 20 - 50 % and that will generate a minimum of 10 million more unemployed.
Great Work Obama! Great work DEMS! I am a Democrat, and I hope ALL of you are voted out of office and replaced with third party candidates.
You want real change in America, do NOT VOTe FOR AN INCUMBENT. Vote only third party until they begin winning elections.
Abe Lincoln was a third party candidate and only the second Republican to ever run for president. He was one of four men to get Electoral College votes.
It can happen again if you quit voting for incumbents, if for no other reason than on principle.
