New Right-Wing Craze: Using Bible Quote to Pray That Obama’s 'Days Be Few'
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest News & Politics headlines via email.
The newest far-right craze is an anti-Obama slogan that is making its way onto t-shirts, bumper stickers, mugs, and even teddy bears: “Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8,” which reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” The meme is also taking off on Twitter, with conservatives calling it “hilarious.” Commentators have noted that it’s unclear whether the intent is to hope for an end to Obama’s time in office — or an end to his life. But a look at the lines in the rest of the psalm hint at the latter:
Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
Diana Butler Bass at Beliefnet explains that Psalm 109 is one of the “imprecatory” prayers, “a lament in the form of petition to destroy one’s enemies.” While perhaps intended to be a joke, she notes that the psalm actually “entreats God to destroy the president”:
It is the personal prayer of an individual, someone who has been dealt an injustice by another–and usually more powerful–person. The words of Psalm 109 are those of deep agony, the longings of a victim for retribution and justice. This psalm is considered one of the most difficult of all the psalms–full of violent images of vengeance and death.
Quite a few of the “Pray for Obama” items are being sold at CafePress.com, although many of them have been taken off of the site (here’s a cached version of some of them). Cafe Press representative Margene H. told ThinkProgress that while the site took down some of the “Pray for Obama” items today, it is now in the process of reinstating them:
We initially pulled the Psalm 109:8 content from our products today because broader media dialog indicated that these designs potentially suggested violence towards the president. Based on current public discourse and further review of the actual content, we have determined that it is fair political commentary and we are in the process of reinstating this merchandise. As with all of our content, these designs will continue to be reviewed and if at any time their meaning is construed as advocating violence we will revisit our decision.
On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spoke with “Patience With God” author Frank Schaeffer, who said that while the psalm was “frightening” in a secular context, it’s even “more threatening” in a biblical context.

Failure to Impeach and Failure To Prosecute obvious and admitted Violations of Federal Felony Laws, such as Torture, only encourages these fools.
The Right is playing with fire and we will all pay for it. Unfortunately there are quite a few racists in the Dems that are just as bad as the neocons, and I think secretly are with them.

I would further advocate anyone wearing such clothing or signs or symbols upon their person or vehicle be stopped and if not arrested for conspiring to kill the president, at the very least a field interview be made and their information placed into the files of threats to American leaders.
There is no justification to attempt to get the president killed beyond disrespect for the American political system, and failure to accept that THEY LOST and are the MINORITY !
LOCK THEM UP !

I am a firm believer in karma and I would not wish to be in the position of these pathological beings as it comes back around the cycle and returns to them. Our politics and media have gone far beyond dysfunction and have escalated to a twisted place like I never thought possible. IMHO, this is treasonous and should be treated as such!

This is where freedom of speech stands or fall. As much as one hates any death threat style products directed at elected officials, the First Amendment is there for one and all.
As a Christian I am perplexed how any Christian could use an out of context Jewish text to suggest one hope that President Obama dies. Since the idea of Christianity is to turn the other cheek and pray for those who do you wrong.

The last two verses even mention the needy. 30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng I will praise him. 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.
So conservatives and Republicans who are against healthcare for all, and who prefer helping the wealthy and powerful should perhaps read the entire entire chapter of Psalms 109 and not just a few verses!!!

We should remember that David also sent one of his generals into battle so that David would not have to compete with him for his wife.
The Psalm could have been authored by, oh, Clinton or even his name sake Senator Vittor.

AND A THOUGHT FROM THE GREAT ARMADILLO,
BARROW A. DILLO
It would seem to me that people do not know the difference between the words "liberal" or "conservative" or what this all adds up too.
This is just another element of "cybertribualism" a creation of how primitive Homo Sapiens still is.
With lack of gray matter and the fear, terror and lack of self respect in the virtual reality we live in as Phil Collins song says "Just another day in paradise"!
I would say we all need a rehab for learning disorders and this is what reality is all about.
Just a thought from an old armadillo trying to understand what “man” is all about.
The world is full of sick jokes and those who rant, scream and wish to PR this to promote hate, dishonor for the sake of their desire for power, money self adulation in their own “cyber ghetto following of thoughtless lemelings looking for a truth that will never come.”
This is the gang of the nightmare of non think whom fear, anger and LET hate rule for they are always acting in as just another "Kafka cockroach" looking for their dung on a bath room floor in the lost great media tent of bought and paid for PR tape worms that live as parasites of others gray matter.
These Christans and there fellow evangelical
"Al the Cadia" traveling in the land of OZ have hit a melted road of plasma brain in a melt down to non-think.
one thought "Get a Life!"

Whether they are supposed christians or totally non believers like many who are commenting, much of the verbage presented tells us that you are just as intolerant as these socalled "christians". You are calling for similar treatment of those who DO NOT REPRESENT CHRISTIANITY, but just because they claim to be christians, you too fall for the falsehood.
YOU are no better then they. Clean your own yard before you try to tell me how to clean mine. Stop the Christ bashing and learn how Christ actually treated people. Learn the realities of the Old Testament and stop misquoting it like these pseudo christians who really are not christians at all. Sure, they might be leaders in their churches, but just because they call themselves christians and lead organisations does NOT mean they are real christians. If you ask them about the 10 commandments, they will probably tell you that they have been done away with. THAT will tell whether they are REAL Christians or not.
Jesus said,"I have not come to destroy the Law and the Prophets, I have come to fulfill it all. Fulfill does not mean doing away with something, it means to carry it out in its fullest. Jesus did and that is the example that He left us. Anyone calling themselves a christian who sprooks off this garbage and quotes Bible verses to back up their diatribe IS NOT A CHRISTIAN. they are working with Christ's enemy and you who fall into the trap set by the enemy to degrade Christ are also working for the enemy.
Well, say what you will. That is the situation of both of you.

No different than the millions of German Lutherans and Catholics who happily murdered millions of Jewish men, women, and children, or the Ku Klux Klansman that raped black women, lynched black men, and bombed churches killing black children.
But then how can there even be a god when someone like George Bush can steal the presidency, or an Oliver North can be resurrected from a traitor, thief, liar, and now born again as a news commentator. These pseudo-Christians go against every teaching of Jesus and have no right to call themselves Christians but in more than 2000 years it has not stopped anyone from doing so.

I would hope that rather than take a knee jerk response that "all" Christians are bad, and that Christianity is evil, people would realize that as with anything there are people who will incorrectly twist things to their point of view.
By conveniently compartmentalizing issues it makes it easy to avoid dealing with them, which seems like another form of ignorance. Which seems, to me, to make it more difficult to contrast one form of righteousness from another..

Whether that means ignoring them or exposing them for what they really are . . . it REALLY, REALLY needs to be done. The problem is the media. They give these ridiculous outbreaks way too much weight . . . all for the sake of sensationalism and viewership/readership. Maybe the media are the real problem? After all, they treated bush like a god and obama like the anti-christ. There are hundreds of opinions, but what the media covers is what people hear and remember.

Support for use of a biblical excerpt to wish harm upon another individual clearly epitomises growing lack of morality among users. This is the essence of the historian message and downfall for America.
Others have already argued that the wish for harm can be construed as a wish for good. This in my view is the climax of the confusion in which a conscience can no longer guide to what is or what is not a thing to wish for.
Wishing your neighbour a volcano begins with moving your house over onto the Atlantic and staying there for a while, unless you have enough wet blankets curbing the fire approaching while enjoying your neighbours misfortune!

Also, I haven't read the Book of Revelations lately, but is there anything in there about the Anti-Christ these people fear so much being a MAN? Maybe that's something these "true believers" should consider before marching off in the service of The Shrieking Cow, their heroine and supposed savior.

In Psalms 109, King David, who is a major figure in the Old Testament is lamenting. He says:
For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,
speaking against me with lying tongues.
They beset me with words of hate,
and attack me without cause.
In return for my love they accuse me,
even while I make prayer for them.
So they reward me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.
For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me? He goes on:
They say, Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand on his right.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin.
May his days be few;
may another seize his position.
May his children be orphans,
and his wife a widow.
May his children wander about and beg;
may they be driven out of the ruins they inhabit.
May the creditor seize all that he has;
may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil.
And then King David says,
Help me, O Lord my God!
Save me according to your steadfast love.
Let them know that this is your hand;
you, O Lord, have done it.
Let them curse, but you will bless.
Let my assailants be put to shame; may your servant be glad.
May my accusers be clothed with dishonour;
may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a mantle.
With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
I will praise him in the midst of the throng.
For he stands at the right hand of the needy,
to save them from those who would condemn them to death.
For those would quote the Bible for their justifications, wouldn’t you think they can do a bit better than this?
The rich irony is that those who have chosen this Bible verse as a slogan clearly have no idea of the context and meaning of that which they quote.
The Bible clearly says the exact opposite of that which they imply.
